here are various ways or standpoints by which you can analyze and critique a
certain material. +ou can critique a material based on its technical aspects, its
approach to gender, your reaction as the audience, or through its portrayal of
class struggle and social structure.
1ormalism-
claims that literary works contain intrinsic properties and treats each work as a
distinct work of art. n short, it posits that the key to understanding a tet is
through the tet itself- the historical contet, the author, or any other
eternal contets are not necessary in interpreting the meaning.
olloing are the common aspects loo3ed into formalism4

Authors techniques in resolving contradictions within the work

/entral passage that sums up the entirety of the work

/ontribution of parts and the work as a whole to its aesthetic quality

#elationship of the form and the content

0se of imagery to develop the symbols in the work

nterconnectedness of various parts of the work

1arado, ambiguity, and irony in the work

0nity in the work$.
eminist %riticism-
also called feminism, it focuses on how literature presents women as sub2ects of
socio'political, psychological, and economic oppression. t also reveals how
aspects of our culture are patriarchal, i.e., how our culture views men as superior
and women as inferior. he common aspects looked into when using feminism are as
follows:

*ow culture determines gender

*ow gender equality (or lack of it) is presented in the tet

*ow gender issues are presented in literary works and other aspects of human
production and daily life

*ow women are socially, politically, psychologically, and economically oppressed by
patriarchy

*ow patriarchal ideology is an overpowering presence
5eader-esponse %riticism-
is concerned with the reviewers reaction as an audience of a work. his approach
claims that the readers role cannotbe separated from the understanding of the
work- a tet does not have meaning until the reader reads it and interprets it.
#eaders are therefore not passive and distant, but are active consumers of the
material presented to them. he common aspects looked into when using reader
response criticism are as follows:

nteraction between the reader and the tet in creating meaning

he impact of the readers delivery of sounds and visuals on enhancing and
changing meaning3.
arist %riticism-
is concerned with differences between economic classes and implications of a
capitalist system, such as the continuing conflicts between the working class and
the elite. *ence, it attempts to reveal that the ultimate source of peoples
eperience is the socioeconomic system. he common aspects looked into when using
4arist criticism are as follows:

5ocial class as represented in the work

5ocial class of the writer6creator

5ocial class of the characters

/onflicts and interactions between economic classes7ote that these are not the only
critical approaches you can use. 8ther approaches in writing a critique include
postmodern criticism, post-colonial criticism, structuralism, psychological
criticism, gender criticism, ecocriticism, biographical criticism, historical
criticism, mythological criticism, and deconstructionist criticism.
