EC Basics

.t'AINSTREAM
History
• Its actua lly a n old, proven tec hnology - used in Gra nd Centra l Station, etc.
• Origina lly patented by GE
• The Germa ns figured out how to ada pt it for usage today

• Electronic Commutation

.t'AINSTREAM
How Does it Wor k
• Its a brushless, direct c urrent exter nal rotor type of motor that is receiving AC
power via a n integrated electronic ca rd that does the following:
• AC/DC Conversion
• Electronic Switching
• Speed control by adjusting power output

Motor Const ruction A dva ntages
• It comes balanced from the factory
• No bearings a nd shafts to worry a bout
• No need to lubricate the bearings, completely sea led
• No internal windings a nd brushes, EC motors use perma nent magnets
• DC power is much more efficient tha n AC power

.t'AINSTREAM
Fewer Com ponents
• No VFD

• No sine filters

• No inverters

• No motor filters/protection

• No shielded ca bles

Energy Efficiency

.t'AINSTREAM
Energy Efficiency
• Doubling the speed of a motor increases the its power input by a factor of 8
so its very wa steful to run a fa n fa ster tha n necessa ry
• We see a n average of 20-30% energy savings when fa ns a re replaced in-kind
• AC Motors a re designed to operate at a certain point in their curve which
coincides with peak efficiency
• On either side of this point, efficiency drops off considera bly
• EC motors have a n a lmost flat efficiency curve ac ross their entire speed range

Motor Control

.t'AINSTREAM
Motor Cont rol
• Internal electronics continuously monitor the speed a nd adjust the control
input
• This circuitry ca n be made availa ble to externa l sources ena bling basic speed
control
• 0-10/PVM or 4-20 mA inputs
• Direct connection to c losed loop controls a llowing control by temperate,
pressure, a nd other parameters

.t'AINSTREAM
Completely Integrated Electronics
• No ca binet space required
• No shielded wires
• PID controller
• Easy wiring
• High reliability
