Correlation of surface and underground surveys: methods connections through audits, inclines and
shafts, connection by means of the magnetic needles, connections through one or two vertical shafts.

Stope surveying: with hanging compass and clinometers, tape triangulation, radiation and other
methods.

Subsidence surveying: principle methods and degree of accuracy.

Theory of errors: introduction to errors and its theory propogation of errors, their preventions and
eliminations, method of least squares and its applications, probable error of a single observation and the
most probable value, weight and weighted observations and their probable errors.

Mine plans and sections: legal requirements as to mine plans in india and other countries; preparation
and preservation of plans and sections, representation of geological and other features of mine plans
and sections. Stepped up plans, assay sections.

Recent developments in mine survey instrumentation: double telescope theodolites-construction,


adjustments, and uses, hanging theodolites, gyrotheolodites, use of modern data processing techniques
in survey computation.

characteristics of coal liable to spontaneous heating. Detection and prevention measures. Dealing with

Deep mining problems

Rock pressure: rock pressure in development, rock pressure in stopping, rock bursts in stopping
and development.

headings, stopes, shafts, winzes, cross-cuts, stowing practice, pack walling, concreting and self
supporting strata.

Mining: stope planning, stopping sequence, minimization of rock bursts and their effects

Ventilation: effect of temperature, humidity and barometric pressure in deep mines, sources of

Mi 302 UNDERGROUND COAL MINING METHODS

Introduction: Opening up of the coal deposit, capacity of the mine. Division of the mining
property, develop of the deposit. Design of pit-top and pit-bottom layouts.

Mining method: Evolution of coal mining methods, factors the choice of the methods-
characteristics of coal strata structure of deposit, thickness, angle of dip, of seam, physic-
mechanical properties and quality. Of mining systems; relative merits and application layout
and development plans.

Board and pillar methods; Size of pillars and headings; system application, size of panels, layout of
panels working faces; Extraction of pillars- caving and stowing .

Longwall methods: Retreating and advancing methods, development and face work, organization of
work on the face, and continuous methods, layout of faces-caving and system:
mechanization in longwall faces.

Special methods: extraction of thick seams- conventional methods, extraction of steep


and thick seams, seams, seams subject to sudden outburst of gas and seams lying under
reservoirs and other surface structures, is liable to spontaneous heating. Horizon mining- principles
development and application of the system. Harmonious Hydraulic mining. Gassification of
coal underground.

Methods of stowing coal: hand packing, mechanical, and hydraulic methods and their

Contouring: characteristics of contours, various methods of contouring by level, theodolite,


tacheometer, plane table and other instruments. Calculation of areas and volumes from contours.

Tacheometry: principles, applications and limitation of tacheometric surveys, degree of accuracy,


applications in preliminary survey, for roads, railways, pit-tops etc. , deduction of data by use of
tacheometric tables.

Tacheometers: gradienter, omnimeter, substance bar, anallatic lens, stadio slide rule etc. ( Triangulation
principles, form of triangules and network of triangules) measurement of abservations and calculation of
co-ordinates,precise traversing – principles and its uses. Open cast surveys: survey operations in open
pits, calculating the amount of material taken .

Field astronomy: principlers and definition. Determination of true north by solar and star observations.

Photographic and aerial surveying; (elementary form) Principles of photogranmetry and its applications,
setting out: setting out a point of known rectangular co-ordinates. Giving and maintaining direction and
gradient for inclined shafts, slopes, levels and tunnels, maintaining alignment, ranging simple curves on

Mine transport: the elements of different mine transport systems, classification and techno-economic

Rope haulage: wire ropes- constructional details, classification, fields of application, rope capping and

Introduction: mineral beneficiation and its role in mineral exploration and conservation with special
reference to Indian minerals.

Comminution and liberation: theory and practices of crushing and grinding, convertional units used.

Sizing: laws of settlings of solids in fluids, laboratory techniques, interpretation and plotting of data,
industrial sizing by screens and classifiers.

sampling: importance of sampling and methods used in ore milling. Pre-concentration: picking, washing
and classification. Gravity concentration methods: jigging, flowing film concentration method physic-
chemical principles, flotation, reagents, flotation machines and circuits, application to common
sulphider, oxides and oxidised minerals.

Magnetic and electrical separation ; principles, wet and dry magnatic separators, high tension
separation.
