Celgrow soil amendment. Pastures and hay fields are good options.
Mercer Celgar will cover the costs of a qualified professional per-
forming soil sampling, obtaining government authorization and
delivery costs of Celgrow soil amendment based on access with a
large truck/pup combination. Acreage should be able to accom-
modate at least 6 truck/pup loads. The two major components of
Celgrow are individual wood fibres lost from the pulping process
and surplus bacteria from the wastewater biological treatment
facility. Wood fibres enhance soil moisture retention and bacteria
are a good source of soil nutrients. The landowner is responsible
for spreading and incorporating Celgrow into their soil.

Over the years many people in Kaslo have learned to knit,
crochet, search for herbs, make a lavender wand, or have
been the recipient of a stitched, felted, or wild crafted art
piece from Hiltrud. Kaslovians enjoyed the flowers she
brought to decorate concerts, church services, Langham
and school events. She was a woman of many talents, with
a broad knowledge of wild crafting and the traditional arts.
Hiltrud had more than a fair share of difficulties. She grew
up in post-WWII Germany and after that struggled hard to
study and then find work in England. Her zest for life helped
her as a new immigrant and Waldorf teacher in Toronto,
where she cared for children with severe physical difficulties
in a home-like setting. Her great knowledge of botany,
medicinal plants, and trees came with her upbringing. Her
father was a colleague of Rudolf Steiner, and in Canada,
her husband John Rohlmann was a respected Steinerian
agriculturalist (and filmmaker). Hiltrud offered Kaslo her
determined energy and made it her home for over 25 years.
Her estate has gifted Kootenay Lake Hospice Society with
a donation of $20,000, JVH School with a scholarship and
a bursary for graduating students (for a decade), and the
Langham with enough funds to establish a third gallery
space. She loved the Langham, and prior to becoming ill,
was an active volunteer there. Hiltrud would be glad her life’s
savings will go to ease the grief of others, support the arts,
and encourage Kaslo students as they further their education.
North Kootenay Lake Hospice Society, JVH School,
and the Langham want to announce their thanks and gratitude
to Hiltrud and the executors of her estate, for this
wise and generous legacy which will serve
the whole community of Kaslo.

Helping municipalities adapt to
impacts of climate change
Columbia Basin Rural Development Institute (RDI) at
Selkirk College is proud to announce it will be working
with nine municipalities in the Kootenay and Boundary
region in their efforts to strengthen their resilience to the
effects of climate change.
RDI has been chosen by the Federation of Canadian
Municipalities (FCM) to help these communities in the
areas of climate change assessment and capacity build-
ing in support of local climate change adaptation efforts.
Municipalities are on the front lines of climate change, so
it is important they are developing plans and implement-
ing actions to become more resilient.
Through contemporary peer learning networks focused
on climate change resilience activities and training spe-
cific to this region, the project will help local leaders to
integrate climate change adaptation into new or existing
plans and systems. Participating municipalities will work
with their peers toward similar goals using innovative
approaches and solutions to the challenges they face.
“In April 2019, the board of directors of the Regional
District of Central Kootenay (RDCK) declared a climate
action imperative in recognition of the global and local
state of climate crisis,” says Sangita Sudan, RDCK’s general
manager of development services. “The opportunity to
participate in this new collaborative partnership focused
on increasing local government’s capacity to address key
climate risks and impacts such as flood, wildfire and
extreme weather couldn’t be more timely.”
The RDI has been supporting climate adaptation in the
region since 2014 and is pleased to receive $239,000 in
federal funding to continue this work.

“Selkirk College’s Applied Research and Innovation
Centre, which houses the RDI, is pleased to continue to

MacDonald, director of applied research and innovation
at Selkirk College. “These types of initiatives create valu-
able experiential learning opportunities for our students
as they work alongside our community partners and fac-
ulty advisors to advance innovation in our region.”
The RDCK joins the City of Nelson, City of Cranbrook,
Town of Golden, City of Kimberley, Village of Silverton,
City of Rossland, Regional District of Kootenay Boundary
and the Regional District of East Kootenay in addressing
shared climate adaptation challenges through this project.
The work with these communities is funded through
FCM’s Climate Adaptation Partner grants available
through FCM’s Municipalities for Climate Innovation
Program (MCIP). MCIP, delivered by FCM and funded
by the Government of Canada, is a five-year, $75 million
program designed to support and encourage Canadian
municipalities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and
adapt to climate change.

Greens to choose candidate
The Green Party of Canada (GPC) Kootenay-Colum-
bia Electoral District Association (EDA) is pleased to
announce that we will be choosing our candidate for the
upcoming federal election on July 14. With the Green
‘wave’ currently sweeping the nation, we have two out-
standing individuals vying for the role. Recent polling
data informs us that Green Party leader Elizabeth May
outranks other federal party leaders in terms of leader-
ship and trustworthiness.
There will be three opportunities for the public to meet
and question the prospective candidates before July 14.
In Nelson on June 25, 7 pm at the Hume Hotel; on July
4 in Fernie; and July 7 in Revelstoke. Details of these two
meetings still need to be finalized. The two contestants are
Abra Brynne of Nelson and Kerri Wall of Fernie. Both will
be speaking and answering questions at all three events.
In order to vote, GPC members must be Kootenay-
Columbia residents, members for at least 30 days and
be at least 14 years of age. To participate in choosing the
candidate, the Nomination Contest must be attended in
person. (The meeting will be held simultaneously in three
locations around the riding.)

 Taghum Hall FUNdraiser
The bright and beautiful renovated Taghum Hall, located
along the shores of the Kootenay River, 10 kilometres west
of Nelson, is the cultural cornerstone of the Taghum area. It
is operated by an independent, community based society of
members and volunteers. The hall hosts vibrant community
programming of special events and ongoing activities. Any-
one in the region can become a member to help keep the hall
going and to shape its future.
It all started back in the early 1950s when the local Russian
Doukhobor community needed a place to meet and worship.
They formed a society and obtained the present plot of land
near the old Taghum bridge, on the site of a former sawmill.
With lots of volunteer labour and little money, they built the
hall from salvaged buildings from the Lemon Creek Japanese
Internment Camp. The original building was wood heated
and had no indoor plumbing. Over the years, the hall has
served as a weekly place for Doukhobor worship, plus as a
venue for weddings, funerals, meetings, voting, dinners and
dances for both the Russian community and the community
at large. The strong volunteer base has kept the hall as a vital
part of the community.
Improvements were made gradually on shoestring budgets
over time. The hardwood floor was salvaged from the fire
damaged Trafalgar Junior High in 1967. Indoor washrooms
and an expanded kitchen were added as a BC Centennial
project in 1971. The wood furnace was replaced by a pro-
pane heater. By 2010, the hall was in need of an upgrade, but
community members expressed a strong desire to keep the
hall community owned. In the summer of 2014 renovations
finally began. The building was brought up to modern struc-
tural standards, with a new accessible entry and washrooms,
new windows and a deck built to overlook the river. New
energy efficient heating, insulation and lighting were added.
The hall now starts another chapter of its life with modern
standards, but with the same community spirit that has kept
the hall going. Many people in the region have fond memo-
ries of events that have taken place in Taghum Hall over the
years. We hope to continue that tradition.
Taghum Hall is hosting a family dance FUNdraiser on
Friday, July 19, 7 pm until late, with classic rock band Rail
Town. $15 advance tickets are available at Eddy Music in
Nelson and Taghum Shell gas station. Tickets are $20 at the
door. Kids under 12 are free. Come support the hall!

Charles W. Busk staked a large claim for a townsite on
Kootenay Lake’s West Arm and drew up plans for the com-
munity of Balfour in 1889, speculating that “Balfour is
bound to be the centre of the farming, fruit farming and
gardening sections of the lake country.”
