Basic Productivity Tools (BPT)

Lesson Idea Name: Cell Structures and Functions

Content Area: Biology
Grade Level(s): 9th
Content Standard Addressed: SB1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to analyze the nature of
the relationships between structures and functions in living cells.
a. Construct an explanation of how cell structures and organelles (including nucleus, cytoplasm, cell
membrane, cell wall, chloroplasts, lysosome, Golgi, endoplasmic reticulum, vacuoles, ribosomes, and
mitochondria) interact as a system to maintain homeostasis.

Technology Standard Addressed: understand the fundamental concepts of technology operations,

demonstrate the ability to choose, use and troubleshoot current technologies and are able to transfer their
knowledge to explore emerging technologies.

Selected Technology Tool: PowerPoint video

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

The students will watch BrainPop videos on cells and cell structures before class. This is a good way to
introduce students to the new information. English language learners will be able to play the videos as many
times as they want to help them learn and understand the concepts. The videos also have closed captioning
available for students with auditory impairments. The students will narrate the information on the
PowerPoint slides. This will be beneficial for students with both auditory and visual disabilities.
Lesson idea implementation:
This lesson plan has students do a flipped classroom assignment. The students will watch two Brain Pop
videos on cells and cell structures to introduce them to the new concepts. Then I will lecture on the subject in
class, further illuminating upon the concepts and going into a more in-depth analysis of the cell structures and
functions. Based on the Brain Pop videos and the class lecture, the students will create a PowerPoint video.
Students will use PowerPoint to create a presentation of cells structures and organelles. They will
demonstrate an understanding of the structure and functions of the organelles.
Students will then record a narration of the slides and convert the PowerPoint plus the narration into a
PowerPoint video. They will submit the PowerPoint video before the next class period. Once the videos are
submitted, the students will share the videos that they created online with the rest of the class. This way
students can use the videos they created as a future reference and for study materials. Since each of the
student’s videos will be different, sharing the videos with each other helps them to have access to a variety of
different materials on the subject matter. The PowerPoint videos will be graded on accuracy, thoughtfulness,
and application of the information learned in class.

Reflective Practice:
The students can choose their favorite cell structure or organelle and use the same PowerPoint productivity
tool to create a video. Instead of introductory information, students will go in depth on the structure and
function of the organelle. Students will then tie the organelle to other processes and functions in the cell or in
a living system. Students will demonstrate that they have a deep understanding of the material. The students
will tell why the organelle is important and how does it affect a person’s quality of life. This will raise the
Bloom’s level to applying and analyzing. The students can then share their presentations with other students
so they will have information on each of the important cell structures and functions.
