What’s an Iron Butt? Probably
not what you’re thinking.
While the Iron Butt Rally
first ran in 1984, the Iron Butt
Association (IBA) is a US-
based organization dedicated to
endurance motorcycle riding with
a claim of over 60,000 members
worldwide who tout themselves as
the “World’s Toughest Riders.”
One of its more popular slogans
is “The World Is Our Playground.”
The IBA is a loose-knit
organization with only one way
to earn membership: ride one of
the several rides the IBA certifies.
There are many different durations,
the shortest being 1,000 miles in
24 hours, the longest being 11,000
miles in 11 days!
At 5:00 on the morning of
Monday, June 17th, Steve Stebleton
and Jeff Knodel departed Glasgow
starting their “SaddleSore 1000”
ride. Their route would be Glasgow
to Wolf Point to Circle, Glendive,
Butte, Great Falls, Shelby, and
back home across the Hi-Line on

Team to watch for

Following a 1st place finish at Rock Creek
that first weekend of June, Glasgow’s Ken
Schmidt (at right) and Mark Jones of Billings
followed it up with a second place finish at the
Canyon Ferry Festival this past Saturday and
Sunday with 28.08 pounds on just four fish
(one on Saturday, three on Sunday) behind
winners Cory Novak and Kyle Belo who had
34.88 pounds on five fish (four on Saturday,
one on Sunday). The majority of the 200-team
field caught way more walleye — some teams
carded five both days — but didn’t even get a
paycheck. That’s the way this tournament has
been going, you have to know how to find big
fish. You absolutely gotta go hunting for the
big ones. In fact, Glasgow’s Kris Keller and
Whit Rush placed 7th on just two fish! This
included a 12.38 pounder. 1st place received
$10,000 plus $400 day money. Schmidt and
Jones had a $5,400 payday. So if anyone’s
got momentum going into the Montana
Governor’s Cup Walleye Tournament July 11-
13, this is a team to watch. Ken — or shall we
call him HOt Shtick Schmidt — has already
been in on two Guv Cup titles as well as a
North Dakota Governor’s Cup title.

Ya’ Gotta Love ‘em
Let me tell you of a wonderful
lady who competed in a mans world
and won. Her name isn’t important.
She lived in Colorado after having
moved there from Ohio as an eighteen year-old young
lady enamored with stories of the west back in the early
days when the west was young.
I guess she learned about the west and particularly
Arizona after reading stories by her favorite author who
was from her hometown of Zanesville, Ohio. That’s
right....Zane Grey.
He spun stories of young ladies coming out from
the east in search of a husband who had to be a cowboy
just like the handsome, barrel-chested, tousled-haired,
rough-and-tumble but kind to ladies and dogs men who
Grey portrayed.
After a couple months of teaching school in a one
room school house high up among the 14,000’ peaks of
Colorado a young cowboy fitting the description offered
by Zane came riding through the school yard and the
young lady was immediately smitten as was the shy
young cowboy. Let’s just call the young lady Mattie and
the cowboy Slim.
After a whirlwind courtship of about 3 months the
couple were married in a small country church shadowed
by the Sawtooth Range of central Colorado where the
cowpuncher worked on his budding and building small
ranch.
There were three other cowboys working for the
ranch and Mattie found she was required to cook three
meals a day and do the washing for her new husband.
In her “spare” time she tended the garden, bucket fed
orphaned calves, and kept the house clean.
This was woman’s work you see!
When she could steal the time she’d saddle up her
horse and ride out to meet Slim and the boys and help
doing whatever it was they were doing at the time. Slim
was a fast learner and didn’t try to dissuade Mattie from
learning the ropes of the day-to-day management of the
ranch. In fact he was secretly very proud of Mattie.
As it turned out it was a good thing Mattie was a
quick learner as well because after just six months of
married bliss tragedy struck Slim as he was breaking a
young colt. His foot caught on a corral post as the horse
was trying its level best to unseat him and as Slim fell
he hit his head on the bottom corral rail, killing him
instantly if not sooner.
Mattie came running as one of the other hands
hollered for her. In white-faced disbelief she held her
husband’s head to her breast, slowly rocking back and
forth in a daze.
They buried Slim in full view of the mountains he
dearly loved.
For the next two days Mattie stayed in her room
mourning the loss of her soul mate. She contemplated
moving back to Ohio but that thought lasted about 15
seconds.
On the third day after the funeral she was up before
the guys, had breakfast and the work orders ready for
them. She spoke her rehearsed speech to them as they ate
her biscuits, ham and eggs and hot cakes.
It went like this: “Boys, I’m not leaving this ranch
that I love. I’m here to stay. If you don’t like the idea of
working for a woman I will have your pay ready when
you finish your meal. If you decide to stay you will each
get a fifty-cent a day raise beginning now.
However....for those of you who smoke roll-your-
own cigarettes I will deduct fifty-cents a day to make up
for time it takes you to roll those things.”
One smoker stood up and headed for the door. The
other one stayed.
The other hand, a short fat dumpy but able young
man whose name was Kansas, even though he was
originally from Illinois, wore suspenders and was
afflicted with chronic “plumbers crack.”
Mattie addressed the problem this way: “Kansas, I
will deduct the fifty-cent raise until such a time as you
start wearing a belt with your suspenders. You waste fifty-
cents a day stopping work to readjust your britches!”
So after the speech she was left with Monty who was
now a non-smoker and Kansas who was already busy
building himself a belt out of a piece of rope until he
could take time to fashion one out of leather.
Mattie’s ranch prospered and she became one of the
most revered women in Colorado. She worked alongside
the men everyday, cooked their meals, made payroll,
sewed and cleaned for them and was dearly loved by all
of the men who ever worked for her.
I worked for Mattie for three years before moving
on.
She never remarried and as far as anyone knew she
never encouraged any one as a “bunkhouse buddy” with
benefits.
Mattie was a Christian lady. She died peacefully in
her sleep one cold December day under the shadows of
the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. They buried her next
to her beloved Slim. She was 89 years young.
