CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Social media (Rouse, 2016), is the collection of online communications channels dedicated
to community-based input, interaction, content-sharing and collaboration. Websites and
applications dedicated to forums, microblogging, social networking, social bookmarking, social
curation, and wikis are among the different types of social media. Social media is becoming an
integral part of life online as social websites and applications proliferate. Most traditional online
media include social components, such as comment fields for users. In business, social media is
used to market products, promote brands, connect to current customers, and foster new business.

Social media analytics is the practice of gathering data from blogs and social media
websites and analyzing that data to make business decisions. The integration of social media in the
business world can also pose challenges. Social media policies are designed to set expectations for
appropriate behavior and ensure that an employee's posts will not expose the company to legal
problems or public embarrassment. Such policies include directives for when an employee should
identify himself as a representative of the company on a social networking website, as well as rules
for what types of information can be shared (Ibid) page 5.

'Social medias (Fernando, 2016), are primarily Internet-based tools for sharing and
discussing information...' This broad definition covers a wide range of tools available today, and
perhaps captures the essence of what social media is about. Communication tools are some of the
most well-known social media tools. There are tools that many of us use on a daily basis that have
a 'social' aspect to them. For example Wikipedia is a collaborative tool which enables many people
to simultaneously update and view an online encyclopaedia. Google docs allows people to share
and edit documents online such as text documents or spreadsheets, and Dropbox allows people to
upload or download files (often of large sizes) from a central 'folder' which multiple people can
access from a range of devices (from your desktop pc, phone, tablet, etc.).
Some of the most well-known video sharing sites include YouTube and Vimeo, where
users can upload and view videos, while being able to add comments, create channels, and connect
with different users. Examples of music sharing tools include Spotify, and Last FM which are
adding increasing features to allow people to share playlists and musical tastes. As well as
YouTube, Soundcloud is particularly popular among music professionals, allowing them to listen
to, upload and download music tracks for free. Well known sites that offer photo sharing services
with social features include Flickr and Picasa. Pinterest is an example of a 'social bookmarking'
site that allows you to share interesting photos, events, and sites that you have found on the web
with other people.

Social media touches on many diverse areas, from Blogs and Crowd funding sites, to
collaboration, brand monitoring and media sharing sites (Ibid).

Statement of the Problem

This study will attempt to discern and adjudge the effects of the accessibility and
reliability of social media to Senior High School students of Central Philippine University.
Specifically, this study will attempt to describe the following:
1. personal characteristics of the respondents that will include their name, sex, religion,
age, grade/year and social medias used;
2. family characteristics of the respondents that will include the number of members in
their family, the order of birth, occupation of his/her parents, and whether parents are living
together or not;
3. community environment of the respondents that will include whether they live in a rural
or urban community;
5. degree of accessibility of the respondents to social media that will include whether the
respondents have access to Wireless Fidelity or mobile data. If not, the researchers would
like to find out what are their other means of internet access; and,
6. find the positive and negative effects of the use of social media to the respondents.
7. find out how reliable Social Media is to the respondents.
Importance of the Study

The benefits this investigation will accrue to the University are limitless considering the

function the University plays in providing an Exemplary Christian Education for Life (EXCEL).

Students. Result of the present investigation would help raise awareness among students

about the positive and negative effects of social media. This awareness would help students utilize

the internet in a more appropriate and efficient manner, with the positive benefits and warnings in

mind.

Family. Result of the present investigation would help raise awareness among families

about the positive and negative effects that social media have on their children. It would help

families decide whether an internet connection would be needed in their household.

Parents. Result of the present investigation would help parents be aware and would also

help them to decide whether it would be appropriate and necessary to acquire an internet

connection in order to aid to the student’s academic needs.

University. Result of the study would help the university take action in order to aid other

students who do not have an internet connection in their household. It would help the university

decide what to do regarding the internet in order to help students with their academic pursuits. This

would also guide teachers to decide what output would be best for the whole of students, especially

those who do not have access to the internet and social media in their household.

Future researchers. Future researchers may use these results in order to aid with their own

researches or studies. They may use this research to further investigate and add more information

to the topic. It would also help future researchers to come up with a topic that would be more
significant in regards to the availability of the internet to Senior High School students of Central

Philippine University.

will be taking the survey. The results of the survey will be kept authentic and in confidentiality by
the researchers, meaning the answers would be presented as they are and that the respondents’
privacy would be respected. A total of thirty respondents from the Senior High School department
will be selected with the use of random sampling method.

The quanti-qualitative research will be utilizing the survey results gathered from
respondents from the Senior High School Department of Central Philippine University.
A survey will be collected by the researchers from 30 respondents.
An in-depth, open-ended interview will be conducted by the researcher to gather quanti-
qualitative information from the cases. Direct observation will be done by the researcher to be able
to describe the physical environment of the cases used in the investigation and the home
environment. Secondary data analysis will also be done to determine/establish a general picture of
the students with regards to their use of social media.

The Respondents and Data Sources

The respondents of this quanti-qualitative are 30 students. Each respondent will be taken
from the Senior High School of Central Philippine University. The survey will be conducted in the
respective room and time assigned to the selected students.

respondents

Validation of the Instrument

The six section data gathering instrument (interview guide) will be submitted for a two
stage validation process. These are face validation and content validation. The instrument will be
submitted for face validation to Ms. Abigail Dacudao who teaches in Iloilo National High School.

This will be done to validate that the respondent has access to the internet in their homes.
Further revision of the instrument will be based on the recommendation or comments or
suggestions of the respondent.

Data Gathering Process

After the respondents have been chosen, the researchers would personally interview them.
Permission will be asked from the respondents to allow the researchers to collect the necessary
data needed to complete the research. The researchers will remain professional and confidential in
their data gathering, recording the content of the interview with accuracy that will serve as the
basis for writing the research’s contents.
Data Processing and Analysis
Accomplished interview guides will be closely scrutinized to determine it all. Items in the
interview guide are properly and adequately answered.
Data gathered from the in-depth interview of the subjects will be structurally analysed to
select important information that will be included in the final report. Data gathered from the
environmental scanning will be incorporated in the report to give the reader an idea of the physical
and home environment of the subject used in the investigation. Secondary data from the
respondents will be structurally analysed and incorporated in pertinent parts of the report which
discusses the legal nature of the study.
Data for this study will be analysed descriptively and presented in the form of survey
reports. A general discussion of quantitative data using the personal and the family characteristic
of the study will be presented as an introduction to the presentation of the quantitative data. A total
