(4 marks) ji) Although both materials are made of carbon, explain briefly why the strength of diamond is higher than graphite. (2 marks) b) Discuss the type of bonding(s) that occur in the following materials based on the electronegativity value of each element. (Electronegativity: U = 1.4; 0 = 3.5; Ti= 1.5; Al = 1.5; Fe= 1.8; Si= 1.8) i) UO, ii) TEAL ill) Fe-Si (6 marks) c) X-ray diffraction pattern for a-iron is shown below, using a diffractometer and monochromatic x-radiation with a wavelength of 0.154 nm; each diffraction peak on the pattern has been indexed. Calculate the interplanar spacing for each set of planes indexed and determine the lattice parameter of Fe for each of the peaks. [Avogadro's number = 6.02 x 10°° atoms / mol] i) Determine the crystal structure of the metal and the atomic radius of the metal. (8 marks) ii) Calculate the atomic packing fraction of the metal above, (3 marks) iii) Determine how the coordination number of the crystal structure of the metal is obtained. (3 marks) QUESTION 3 a) _ Explain the effect of temperature on the concentration of the following within a crystal. i) vacancies, ii) interstitial defect ii) substitutional defect. (6 marks) b) _ Differentiate between vacancies point defect and voids in bulk defect. (2 marks) c) State the factor that affects the type of dislocations below: i) edge dislocations. (4 marks) d) Explain briefly the required preparative condition when a copper alloy structure is to be ‘examined for the following purposes: i) to examine the surface features of the alloy specimen by scanning electron microscope. ji) to study the dislocation that occur in the metal alloy by transmission electron microscope.
