FEAST OF STS PETER & PAUL, APOSTLES
Dear Parishioners,
Today we celebrate the Feast of two
Pillars of our church. Peter and Paul are
such different characters and in standing
together, gives a powerful witness to the
message of Jesus.
Peter, as ever impetuous, strong and yet
very weak and human. Paul, is steeped in
Jewish study and traditions, set out to bring
the gospel to the nations. His tireless
missionary jorneys are well recorded in his
letters and by St Luke, in the Acts of the
Apostles.
The story of Peter released from prison
is our dramatic first reading today. The
scene is in Jerusalem. King Herod is
persecuting certain members of the church.
James the brother of John has been
beheaded. This murderous action pleased
many in the Jewish community and it also
showed the Romans that Herod was doing
his bit to “keep law and order”,
Just like when Jesus was arrested during
the days of Unleavened Bread, so too Peter
was arrested, put under very high security
arrangements in prison … between two
soldiers; fastened with double chains;
guards at the main entrance and an iron
gate. No way Peter was going to escape!
Note, “all the time Peter was under
guard, the church prayed to God for him
unremittingly”.
Then we hear about the Angel of God,
coming to the rescue! What a drama against
the most powerful empire at the time, the
Roman Empire. Here we have the stark
contrast of “earthly power”, shown by the
prison guards; ‘spiritual’ power, by the
Church praying for Peter and ‘Divine’ power
by the Angel of God, leading Peter to
freedom.
Subsequently, Peter arrives in Rome,
where he and Paul gave witness by their
martyrdom.
The second reading today from Paul to
Timothy is likely to have been written
fromhis prison cell in Rome, where he was
under house arrest. Paul realises the end is
near. So these words are really his ‘last will
and testament’. They are precious words,
Paul is ready to leave this life as he is
martyred in 67AD. He considers he has
‘fought the good fight …’ He has ‘finished the
race …’, now he is prepared for the crown of
glory as a reward from the Lord. How nice it
would be for all of us to be able to utter
those words too?
In the Gospel, Peter make a clear
profession of faith.
But notice the faith of Peter is given by
the Father in heaven. Peter is now given the
Keys of the Kingdon of God. We all have
access to those treaures and promises of
God’s kingdom through our baptism.
We pray for the Verbum Dei Community
on retreat in July as they pray for us.

A programme for adults who are interested
in receiving the Sacrament of Baptism,
First Communion or Confirmation in the
Catholic Church. It is also open for anyone
who would like to explore their faith more.

PARISH OUTREACH
SANDWICH MAKING (PREPARATION):
In the hall on, Fri. 5h July after Mass.
Volunteers are urgently needed on
Saturday mornings at 7:30am to help with
preparing the sandwiches, soups, tea and
coffee.

 OLIVE WOOD CRAFTS FROM THE HOLY
LAND (BETHLEHEM)
Last weekend, we welcomed Christopher
of the Good Shepherd Company from the
Holy land (Bethlehem) who sold olive
wood crafts on behalf of Christians, orphans
and the elderly, in the Holy Land.
Christopher would like to thank Fr Joe and
the parishioners of St John Vianney for their
support. The sum of £850.00 was raised
from the sale of all the rosaries, crosses,
cribs and religious statues.

SOCIAL JUSTICE AND PEACE FORUM
Saturday 6th July at St Aloysius Church
Hall from 10:30am to 1:30pm.
Speakers will be Christine Allen, Director of
CAFOD, James Buchanan from Operation
Noah and Edward De Quay from the Bishops
Conference of England and Wales on the UN
Sustainable Development Goals.
Their talks will be followed by discussion in
small groups and then a shared lunch. This
is a free event, all are welcome.
