Thursday: 400 teachers for amateur beekeepers - DEFRA

Britain‟s backyard beekeepers are to be helped to avoid the problem of winter bee deaths by 400 Government-backed
volunteer teachers.
Soaring numbers of people are taking up the hobby amid concern over honey bee decline. But due to challenges from pests
and diseases, inexperienced beekeepers are losing more colonies over winter, so better skills are needed.
400 experts across England and Wales are to be trained to teach beekeepers good husbandry as part of a new project under
the Government‟s Healthy Bees Plan. It will be run in partnership by the British Beekeeping Association (BBKA) and National
Diploma of Beekeeping Board (NDBB), and jointly funded by Defra.

Rare Barbastelle bat breeding in Lincolnshire – Forestry Commission

The Forestry Commission can reveal that the rare Barbastelle bat has established a maternity colony in a Lincolnshire
woodland – a first for the county and one of the very few such sites identified in Britain.
The bat is generally regarded as a southern English species, but research has revealed that it is not only present, but
breeding in 900 acre Chambers Farm Wood, near Wragby.

British Wildlife Photography Awards – Winners Announced today.

The competition‟s winning photograph of a herring gull taken by Steve Young shows a familiar
bird in its conventional setting, but the visual impact is extraordinary. The judges were looking
for the one image that stood out, among thousands of entries, as the most memorable.
Competition judge Greg
Armfield from WWF said: “This is a unique and striking image.
One that captures perfectly the power, chaos and intensity of
the ocean as it surrounds the majestic gull.”
Tom Hind, competition judge from Getty Images, added: “I like
the defiance in this shot - the gull‟s refusal to be moved in the
face of this crashing wave seems to sum up a peculiarly
British stoicism! It‟s also a great example of how the
commonplace can be transformed in a judicious moment.”
CJS sponsors the Habitat category and the winner is a lovely

form in the snow

Friday: Red squirrels on the rise in Cornwall reports Country Life

Two areas in Cornwall have been identified as perfect for releasing new red squirrel populations into the wild in an attempt to
boost numbers
Red squirrels are beginning the long march back from exile, having been driven out of England by the marauding grey, and
the much-anticipated return of the appealing tufty-eared creatures should be boosted by the start of a new project in
Cornwall. Systematic work has begun on ridding two parts of the county of greys before releasing the rightful occupants. But
the process of removing the more aggressive invaders-who vandalise trees, nests and sometimes buildings, are more prolific
breeders and infect reds with squirrel pox-is described by the Red Squirrel Survival Trust (RSST) as „challenging' and likely to
take at least three years.

Falconry: Students spread their wings

The Telegraph's Christopher Middleton reports on the lucky pupils using falcons to do schoolwork.
Look through the national curriculum and you‟ll find French and fractions, but not falconry. Yet it‟s a subject that teaches you
about a lot more than just birds, as the pupils of Treloar School, in Alton, Hampshire, are discovering. Today is the
culmination of a four-morning course that is designed to teach them maths, English, history, biology and physics. Through
the medium of winged predators.
So far this week, the children have weighed the birds in order to calculate their flightworthiness; they‟ve identified falconry-
related phrases that are still in use today; and they‟ve observed the similarity of the birds‟ wing shape to that of famously
aerodynamic fighter planes, such as the Hawk and the Harrier.
