Teacher Candidate: Kasey Gallo Date: 6/30/19

Grade and Topic: 3rd grade Science Length of Lesson: 50 minutes for 2 days

Mentor Teacher: Jennifer Townes School: University of Memphis – IDT 3600

UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVE/GENERALIZATION/BIG IDEA:

 This Water cycle lesson is an introduction to a unit covering the earth’s systems.

LESSON OBJECTIVE:
 Given website sources, the student research and gather information about the four stages of the water
cycle, with 100% accuracy.
 Using the website, Prezi, the student will create a presentation to describe the water cycle, with a score
of three out of four on the rubric.
 Given a worksheet, the student will be able to describe the four stages of the water cycle and draw a
diagram, with 100% accuracy.

Student Participation

The goal of this lesson is for students to demonstrate a clear understanding of each stage of the water cycle. The
student will provide a visual representation of all four stages of the water cycle.

STANDARDS ADDRESSED:

State/District, Common Core Standards

TN Science – 3.ESS2 1) Explain the cycle of water on Earth.

ISTE Standard(s)
 3. Research and information fluency: Students apply digital tools to gather, evaluate, and use information.
b. Locate, organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and ethically use information from a variety of sources and media.

MATERIALS:
 Laptop

Technology Integration

Students will use the websites stated above to research and gather information about the four stages of the water
cycle. The web page Prezi will be used for the students to create a visual representation of all four stages of the
water cycle. Students, upon completing the activity will save their work on their Prezi account, and share their
work with their classmates.

BACKGROUND and RATIONALE:

 Students will demonstrate a clear understanding of each stage of the water cycle by providing a visual
representation of all four stages of the water cycle.
 Students will understand that the water cycle is powered by the sun’s energy and by gravity.
 Academic Language is not addressed in IDT 3600.
 This lesson is an introductory lesson to the Earth’s Systems unit that will be covered.
 I am aware that the lesson will be differentiated for students who did not master the objectives and for those
ready for enrichment. However, modifications are not covered in this course and are not part of this
particular lesson.

PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:

● Introduction: (10 minutes)
 Begin the lesson by projecting “The Water Cycle” video on the overhead, or white board.
 Provide background information and explain each stage of the water cycle to the students: Evaporation,
Condensation, Precipitation, and Collection.
 Explain that the water cycle is powered by the sun’s energy and by gravity.
 However, for the next two days, the students will organize the information they have learned and create a
Prezi presentation about the four stages of the water cycle
● Procedures:

Prior to the Computer (5 minutes)

Teacher Procedures:
1. After the introduction, instruct the
students to take out their notebooks
and a pencil to take notes.
2. Explain that they will be using the laptops
to browse the internet to find information
about the four stages of the water cycle.
3. Display the directions on the projector
board for the assignment, along with website
sources.

Student Procedures:
1. Students will take out their notebooks and pencils
and get ready to take notes.
2. The students will read the directions on the
whiteboard, and ask questions if needed.

● Closure:
 Have students return back to their assigned seats, and have students volunteer to reflect about what they have
learned about the water cycle. After the class reflection, the students will complete the Water Cycle
Worksheet to assess student knowledge.
