Shodhganga : How to Convert PDF ?

Portable Document Format (PDF) is an open format introduced by Adobe Systems and de
facto format for distribution and exchange of electronic documents around the world. PDF is
the recommended standard format for thesis to be uploaded into Shodhganga. PDF
specifications are available to anyone as an open file format specifications to develop tools,
to create, view, or manage PDF documents. PDF takes care of all formats, graphic images
and page integrity. In addition PDF files can be indexed and searched by keywords.

There are serveral ways to convert a document file into PDF. One method is to use free
software available on Internet to convert file independently into PDF file. Other method is to
use built-in features available with latest word processing software. Almost all latest word
processing software such as Microsoft Word, Open Office etc. have built-in features to
convert a file into PDF. Practically, any computer readable document can be converted into
PDF. A number of online and offline PDF conversion software, solutions are also available.
After installing these conversion software, a user get an option to 'Print' to a PDF document
as similar to print to a Printer.

While printing with PDF option, it request the user to provide a file name. Users are
requested to split whole thesis into chapters and name it with proper names as recommended
earlier in this manual. Institute may also buy Acrobat Distiller or PDF-Maker from Adobe on
educational discount.These programs can convert almost all standard format into PDF
documents. Once Acrobat Distiller is installed on a PC, follow the steps given below to
convert a computer processible file into a PDF file:

 Open the file to be converted

 Click at "File" Menu and select "Print"
 From the Printer Dialogue box, select the Adobe Distiller option, and then click OK
 User will be prompted to save the file as PDF. Give appropriate name and save the
file as PDF.

Methods of using such a software are quite similar. For example, converting a word file into
PDF using free PDF995 software is given below:
i) Go to the web page: http://www.pdf995.com/

ii) In the home page of PDF995, click on the "Downloads" and then "Downloads now" link.

iii) Click on the PDF995 Printer Driver Download link. Save the software in a temporary
folder. From within Windows Explorer, double click on the saved file name to install it.

iv) Once it is installed, PDF995 is ready to convert any document file into PDF files. Follow
the steps mentioned below:

 Open the document

 From the toolbar, select File then select Print/li>
 The Print dialogue box will be displayed
 Click on the Printer Name drop-down list (to view the list of available printers)
 Select PDF995 "printer"
 Click on the "OK" button to print
 A "Save As" dialogue box will appear
 Type a name for the file in the File name field (e.g. 01_chapter01_manoj.pdf), change
directory if desired or store in default directory and click on the Save button.
Remember the directory name for later use.
 In some software, an advertising pop up will appear in the web browser. Just close the
pop up advertisement menu.
 Once a PDF file is created, it can be uploaded into the Shodhganga repository. User
can use PDF995 with other applications (such as Excel or Eudora) to create tables,
certificates as PDF document. From within the application, select "print" then select
PDF995 from the list of printers. PDF995 can also be used to convert HTML pages to
PDF in similar fashion.
