Saurav Arora (SA): You (Karin Lenger) have been in active research for more than three decades.
We would like to how and when this journey started? What was the turning point to opt research
in biomedical sciences?
Kerin Lenger (KL): When I was a 12 year old girl I learnt anatomy, the function of the organs,
diseases and their treatment from a book “the family doctor” which I bought with my pocket-money.
Since that time I wanted to become a medical doctor. I wanted to help sick people and I wanted to
know what cancer is all about. My grandma and my father died due to cancer. Before my high school
diploma, Abitur, I learnt during the lectures of biology that the DNA functions as a morse code
regulating protein syntheses and growth of an organism. That was fascinating for me and I studied
biochemistry at the University of Tübingen to learn how life of an organism is regulated and how
diseases as e.g. cancer are developed.
SA: What was your source of inspiration to venture research in high dilutions?
KL: When my contract at the Medical University finished after 12 years, where I worked as a
Research Assistant in different Institutes, I had to look for a new job to earn my livelihood for me and
my daughter. I got a job at DHU (German Society of Homeopathic Union, owner Willmar Schwabe)
one of the oldest homeopathic pharmaceuticals in the world. I had to visit homeopathic doctors and
guide them to prescribe homeopathic remedies. Later on I learnt homeopathy by the homeopathic
doctors of DZVhÄ, and gave homeopathic lectures for the clients of DHU. But I could not
understand why the highly diluted homeopathic remedies should heal after having crossed the
Avogadro’s constant. There was not any idea how it worked about it. I worked at DHU for 8 years.
Soon after that I passed an examination as a homeopathic practitioner and opened a practice for
classical homeopathy. Gradually I observed that highly diluted and potentized homeopathic remedies
healed my sick patients better than remedies with low potencies.
SA: There has been a huge rejection of high dilution research since inception, but you struggled to
get through these hurdles. How did you achieved that?
KL: When I noticed that the homeopaths did mobb my fundamental homeopathic research I decided
to ignore them and to rely on my scientific colleagues, quantum physicists who are able to understand
the principles of my experiments, although the magnetic photons had not been detected. But the
important fact is that my experiments were reproducible. So I was convinced that my experiments
prove the fundamental principles of homeopathy. I have been invited to scientific conferences
worldwide for many years and talked to my scientific colleagues about these topics instead of
discussing with the homeopaths who are not willing to understand my research.
SA: Do you think fundamental research in the answer to understand the core principals of
homeopathy (mostly clinical).
KL: Yes, of course. Please read my publications:

SA: Many authorities do not accept the correlation of fundamental research and homeopathy
(based on the assumption that no homeopathic principal can be applied in fundamental
research), how you developed a balance between the two? Do you consider that fundamental
research is only needed to label homeopathy to be plausible? Or there exists a correlation
between fundamental research and clinical application of homeopathy?
KL: Please refer to my publication, “Wound healing according to biochemical laws ….
Yes, fundamental research is necessary to understand homeopathy and to make it plausible, only
then homeopathy will be acknowledged worldwide.
SA: In all these years what have been your strength and weakness in homeopathy?
KL: I had a lot of patients with different diseases. During the time I discovered that the patients
became healthy by giving the remedies very often. I also found out that I could give potentized
substrates and inhibitors of the pathological pathways according to the Law of Similars. The
weakness of homeopathy is that its esoteric corner has not any logical explanation of
homeopathy; the people spin esoteric fairies accompanied by psychological stories without any
prove. That is worse for the international acknowledgement of homeopathy.
SA: We know two aspects of your career – a biophysicist and a homeopath. Whom you like
most?
KL: Firstly I am a biochemist and a homeopath, then I became a biophysicist. I love my three
professions very much because with the knowledge of all three I can completely understand
homeopathy.
SA: What inspired you to work in photon area? What was the breakthrough research
which divulged your research on magnetic photons and their correlation with
homeopathy?
KL: It was a pure coincidence! I went together with an engineer for near-field antennas,
Manfred Spielmann, later on my co-author, to a seminar of Prof Konstantin Meyl about
Tesla-coils at the factory of Electronic-Schwille in Munich. We discussed about the
assumption of Prof. F. A. Popp that homeopathy must be an energy in the long wave region.
When I saw the Tesla-coils I suddenly had the idea that this device would be suitable to prove
homeopathy in the long wave region or high frequency region, e.g. at 2.06 MHz or 6.9 MHz.
The owner of the factory Werner Schwille who also produced the Tesla-coils (patent) allowed
us the experiments, and to use his huge Faraday cage. The Tesla-coils produced at 2.06 MHz
and 6.9 MHz longitudinal waves in the near-field antenna region. His friend Josef Ambrusch
had the magnetic loop antenna and the spectrum analyser. Therefore, we started the
experiments with the expectation that the results must be caused by resonance under the
condition that the homeopathic remedy must have the same frequency as the Tesla-coils. The
question was how we got the remedies with the frequencies of 2.06 MHz and 6.9 MHz which
are given by the Tesla-coils. We used a pendulum as Cyril Smith did already. We kept the
electric wire from the oscillator with the frequency of 2.06 MHz or 6.9 MHz over the
remedies. So we got the remedies Cantharis, Argentum met, Bovista etc. and we got the
magnetic resonance effect! We proved that the resonance effect took only place in the
magnetic field of the secondary coil of the Tesla-coil; So I concluded that it must be possible
to get the magnetic frequency spectra and the potency levels from the homeopathic remedies
used. We got them for the first time.

Later on Prof F.-A. Popp invited me to his International Institute of Biophysics and allowed
me to work in his Institute; the publications concerning delayed luminescence of
homeopathic remedies had been worked out there. The biophysicist and co-author Rajendra
Bajpai had together with Prof. F.-A. Popp developed an equation to calculate the number of
photons separated from the homeopathic sugar globules.
SA: How would you describe your experience in explaining the plausibility of homeopathy
to other streams of scientist? Can you throw some light on scientific background of
homeopathy?
KL: Homeopathy is efficacious by magnetic resonance effect from the biophysical view when
the patient takes the remedies. Then pathological biochemical pathways are regulated and
normal laboratory values can be measured soon.
SA: How many research publication do have you w.r.t high dilutions and homeopathy till
date?
KL: 14 publications (See publication list). I was invited as speaker to a lot of conferences
worldwide. LMHI-conferences, Biophysical conferences and Alternative and Complimentary
Medicine conferences.
SA: What has been your greatest discovery so far in high dilution research?
KL: The discovery of magnetic photons in homeopathic remedies including the

measurements of potency levels and frequency spectra. I applied two resonance methods,
Tesla-coil-method and Delayed luminescence using a modified photomultiplier. The results of
both methods confirmed each other.
SA: Can you throw some light on your future plans in biomedical research?
KL: The delayed luminescence method measures only very high potencies from CM to MM,
the Tesla-coil method starts with potencies from 200 D or C or K to MM potencies.
Therefore, further development of the Tesla-coil-method is necessary to measure the
frequencies, the frequency spectra and the potency levels of the homeopathic remedies. It is
important to measure the frequencies of the emitted magnetic photons of patients with
different diseases and of healthy patients to determine the similar remedies for the patient
surely and more quickly.

Karin Lenger, Dipl.-Biochem. ,Dr.rer.nat. studied Biochemistry at the Universities of Tübingen
and Cologne/Germany. She worked as a Scientific Assistant at the Medical University of
Lübeck/Germany for 12 years performing her biochemical enzymatic studies: enzymatic gene
regulation, cancer research, enzymatic mechanisms of steroid hormones. She worked in different
institutes: Institute for Molecular Biology, Institute for Biochemical Endocrinology, Laboratory
of Neurology. Guest lecturer for organic and inorganic chemistry and for analyses of water at the
technical college of higher education for engineers for more than 2 years at Lübeck.
She started her homeopathic career as a Lecturer for classical homeopathy at DHU ((Deutsche
Homöopathie Union, German homeopathy Union) in Karlsruhe 1986-1994. Since 1995, Dr.
Lenger has been working as a Practising doctor and Lecturer for classical homeopathy in Europe.
Over the years she has developed the “biochemical homeopathy” by using substrates of
pathological enzymes in high levels of potentization.
She detected magnetic photons in high homeopathic potencies by scientific proof, by two
magnetic resonance methods. She has developed a model of physical and biochemical function of
homeopathy and published 14 articles about this topic in International Scientific Journals. Karin
Lenger was invited to give lectures concerning the detection of magnetic photons in homeopathic
remedies on international homeopathic and biophysical congresses.

Research – Book on Latest Research in Homeopathy
Its a matter of privilege to share with readers

and colleagues regarding the latest Book on
Scientific Research in Homeopathy titled
Transdisciplinarity and Translationality in
High Dilution Research: Signals and Images
by GIRI. The chapter Recent research on
high dilutions in India has been contributed
by Dr Saurav Arora. It was a challenge as
well as motivation to write about
contributions of Indian scientists and
researchers in the field of research in
homeopathy and high dilution. For readers
interest, the introduction of the contributed
chapter is as follows:
“Although trained with strict academic standards,
researchers have already realized that there is a
natural, poorly described and still unexplained
phenomenon that involves high dilutions”
(Zacharias, 2015).
The biomedical community remains critically sceptic to the therapeutic action of homoeopathic
medicines, which are highly diluted. High dilutions (HDs) are the preferred target of critics, as it is
assumed that no molecules remain in a solution beyond Avogadro’s number. The term HD here is a
relative term used for any substance subjected to serial dilution and rigorous agitation / shaking
(potentization), also commonly known as ultrahigh dilution (UHD). HDs are used since the
inception of homoeopathy, when Christian F. Samuel Hahnemann, the founder of the
homeopathic system of medicine, began experimenting with various substances of different origin,
diluted and applied to induce a therapeutic response. He soon realized that these substances in
diluted form could be applied to similar clinical conditions (similitude principle). This is how the

An Open Letter to BMJ Case Report: Homeopathy-medicine induced severe alcoholic

hepatitis
I recently came across a study published in BMJ Case Report titled, “Homeopathy-
medicine induced severe alcoholic hepatitis“. The authors have beautifully concluded that
“the culprit ‘alcohol’ was found to be the homoeopathy medicines that the patient was
consuming over a month for treatment of Gilbert’s syndrome” after which there was worsening
of the chronic liver disease.
The study is a paid paper (and I don’t have access to said journal) thus I could not
underwent in-depth of the complete study, but what I could understand from the abstract I
am going to share that.
The study claims that a teetotaller (person who a person who never drinks alcohol)
presented with non-alcoholic fatty-liver-disease related cirrhosis. There was worsening of
his complaints after consuming of “homeopathy medicine” (18% alcohol based) for a
month for Gilbert’s syndrome.
Now with the presented limited knowledge, the inference which could be possible made:
1.“Patient was consuming….” – It may be meant that patient was on self medication
and not necessary prescribed the so called “culprit alcohol”. In case is it ok enough to
blame the entire system rather that blaming the patient, who may be at fault (OTC are
nuisance in allopathic system too, but are covered under umbrella of pharmaceuticals).
1.If it was Gilbert syndrome (which usually require no treatment) the homeopathic
physician would be advised patient accordingly. If the physician was not registered or a lay
practitioner, then he must be contacted before blaming the “pathy” as whole. It is said
that, “It may be a fault of a path and not the pathy”.
2.If we consider patient still consumed “18% of culprit alcohol”, of “name not
mentioned in the abstract” then also the following calculation must be considered:
a) Usual doses of homeopathy medicines are 2-3 times a day,
b) On an average, the 30 ml contains around 1000 drops (as per standard dropper of
homeopathic dilution in our clinical practice). This means each drop is equivalent to 0.03
ml and thus each drop has 18% of 0.03ml = 0.0054ml of alcohol.
c) If the patient is taking 15 drops thrice daily (as common dose) it means he is consuming
0.0054 ml x 45 drops = 0.243ml alcohol every day.
d) Thus over a month the quantity would be 7.29 ml.
So do you think this 7.29ml of alcohol over a month is sufficient enough to aggravate the
already existing Non-Alcoholic-Fatty-Liver Disease. This is even less that if a patient
consumes a lite beer in a month!
Even if the patient consumed medicine in syrup based he must have taken not more than
10.5 ml (3 tsp) a day which means – 1.89 ml alcohol a day!
They may be many more grey areas before concluding the “culprits” – medicine or doctor
or self medication OTC. For this I request BMJ to make this paper OPEN ACCESS and
put in public domain with all the requisite reports and evidences. This will also ensure that
the journal has followed the publication and medical ethics before reporting such studies
(at least in their abstracts).

Effects of Ultra-Low-Dose Aspirin in Thrombosis and Haemorrhage.

Abstract
BACKGROUND: Aspirin is the oldest and possibly the most widely used
pharmacologically active substance still used in allopathic medicine. Its effect on fever and
inflammation has paved the way to its anti-thrombotic effect. Dilutions of aspirin have been
tested for many years in the University of Bordeaux, in humans as well as in animal models.
METHODS: This article is a review of the totality of articles published by the Laboratory
of Hematology of the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Bordeaux, reporting
different doses and dilutions of aspirin, different kinds of inhibitors, transgenic mice and
animal models of disease such as portal hypertension and cirrhosis.
RESULTS: Homeopathic dilutions of aspirin, notably 15 cH, have shown a pro-thrombotic

effect in humans and in in-vivo animal studies. Longitudinal studies in rats have also shown
an initial anti-thrombotic effect followed by a pro-thrombotic effect of aspirin several days
after a single high-dose administration. This pro-thrombotic effect seems to act by inhibiting
the cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 pathway in studies performed with COX selective inhibitors
and in knock-out mice without COX-1 or COX-2. This effect may explain the thrombo-
embolic complications described after aspirin withdrawal for the purposes of surgery or after
non-compliance with anti-platelet therapy, and it may be beneficial in normalising primary
haemostasis and decreasing haemorrhage in animal models of portal hypertension and
cirrhosis.
CONCLUSIONS: Aspirin 15 cH acts through the inhibition of the COX-2 pathway

producing a clear pro-thrombotic effect. Further studies should clarify if the pro-thrombotic
effect of aspirin withdrawal and the effect of aspirin 15 cH are related, as secondary effects
of the same drug. Clarifying this last outcome may be of great significance to public health.

Effects of Homeopathic Phosphorus on Encephalitozoon cuniculi-Infected

Macrophages In-Vitro.
Abstract
INTRODUCTION: Encephalitozoon cuniculi (E. cuniculi), a fungus that acts as an

intracellular pathogen, causes a marked neurological syndrome in many host species
and is a zoonotic concern. Although no well-established treatment for this syndrome is
known, previous successful clinical experience using homeopathic phosphorus has been
described in which symptom remission with no mortality occurred in 40/42 animals by
means of unknown immunological mechanisms. The latter observation was the main
motivation for this study.
OBJECTIVE: To verify, in an in-vitro model, if macrophages infected with E.

cuniculi can change in function after treatment with different potencies of phosphorus.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: RAW 264.7 macrophages were infected with E.

cuniculi in-vitro and treated with various homeopathicpotencies of phosphorus. The
vehicle was used as a control solution (0.06% succussed ethanol). After 1 and 24 hours,
the following parameters were analyzed: parasite internalization (by the Calcofluor
staining method), lysosome activity (by the acridine orange method),
cytokine/chemokine production (by the MAGPIX system), and cell ultrastructure.
Automatic image analysis was used when applicable, and the experiments were
performed in triplicate.
RESULTS: Treatment with vehicle alone increased interleukin (IL)-6, tumor necrosis
factor alpha and monocyte chemotactic protein -1 production (p ≤ 0.05) and reduced the
number of internalized parasites (p ≤ 0.001). A progressive and time-dependent increase
in RANTES (regulated on activation, normal T-cell expressed and secreted) and
lysosome activity (p ≤ 0.002) was observed only after treatment with the highest potency
of phosphorus (Phos 200cH), together with decreased apoptosis rate, intense parasite
digestion, and the presence of non-internalized spores.
CONCLUSIONS: Phos 200 cH has a modulatory action on the activity of infected

macrophages, especially a specific increase in RANTES, a key element in the prognosis
of E. cuniculi-infected and of immunosuppressed patients bearing infections.
An In-Vitro Assay Estimating Changes in Melanin Content of Melanoma Cells due to

Ultra-Dilute, Potentized Preparations.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION: The authors had previously conducted an in-vitro study to observe

the effect of homeopathic medicines on melanogenesis, demonstrating anti-vitiligo
potential by increasing the melanin content in murine B16F10 melanoma cells. A similar
experiment was performed using further homeopathic preparations sourced from kojic
acid (KA), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2; HP), 6-biopterin (BP), and [Nle4, D-Phe7]-α-
melanocyte-stimulating hormone (NLE), some of which are known to induce vitiligo or
melano-destruction at physiological dose.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The homeopathic preparations of BP, KA, NLE, and
HP were used in 30c potency. Alcohol and potentized alcohol were used as vehicle
controls. Prior to starting the main experiment, the viability of B16F10 melanoma cells
after treatment with study preparations was assayed. Melanin content (at 48 h and 96 h)
and tyrosinase activity in melanocytes were determined.
RESULTS: At the end of 48 hours, NLE and HP in 30c potency had a significantly greater
melanin content (p = 0.015 and p = 0.039, respectively) compared with controls; BP and
KA in 30c potency had no significant effects. No significant changes were seen at the end
of 96 hours. KA, NLE, HP, and vehicle controls showed an inhibition of tyrosinase
activity.
CONCLUSION: The study demonstrated melanogenic effects of

two homeopathic preparations. Further research to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of
these medicines is warranted.
Effect of Homeopathic Medicines and a Nosode on Larvae of Cochliomyia

hominivorax (Diptera: Calliphoridae).
Abstract
BACKGROUND: Cochliomyia hominivorax is the major fly causing primary

myiasis in livestock animals in Brazil; its larvae develop in the host's living tissues,
causing mutilations, which can even lead to death. In conventional treatments of
myiasis, chemo-synthetic insecticides have been employed directly on larvae
present in the wounds. Homeopathy may represent a healthy and sustainable
alternative both to prevent and to treat myiasis in animals and humans. The
current study evaluated how the emergence of adult insects is affected by the use
of the homeopathic medicines Sulfur 12cH and Pyrogenium 12cH, and the nosode
produced from C. hominivorax larvae at potencies 8cH and 12cH, on third-stage
larvae of a C. hominivorax colony.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The homeopathic medicines and the nosodes

were produced according to the Brazilian HomeopathicPharmacopoeia. Control
groups were distilled water, alcohol, no substance, and the organophosphate
insecticide trichlorfon. For each group, 10 replicates were performed. Emergence
rate of adult insects was evaluated by descriptive statistics followed by analysis of
variance. Homogeneity of variances was verified by F-test and group means were
compared with Tukey's test.
RESULTS: Mortality rates in control groups were 2.7% for 30% (v/v) alcohol,
4.3% for distilled water, 3.2% for no substance (p > 0.05). In the trichlorfon group,
the mortality rate of larvae was 90.8%. For Sulfur 12cH, the mortality of larvae
was 94.6%, and for Pyrogenium 12cH it was 98.6%. The latter three means were
not statistically different from each other or from the mean found for the
trichlorfon group. The mortality rates of larvae were 61.3% and 66.6% for
nosode C. hominivorax 8cH and 12cH, respectively (p > 0.05).
CONCLUSIONS: Results suggest that homeopathy could be used therapeutically

to prevent and treat animals and humans with myiasis caused by C. hominivorax.
Phenomenological Characterization of Low-Potency Homeopathic Preparations

by Means of Pattern Formation in Evaporating Droplets.

Abstract
BACKGROUND: Evaporation-induced pattern formation in droplets has been

applied to test effects of high potencies. Here we propose for the first time the droplet
evaporation method (DEM) as a tool to characterize low potencies on a qualitative
and quantitative basis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The present investigation consisted of: (1)

screening of 18 different substances of mineral, vegetal, and animal origin in the 1x to
6x potency range; choice of four substances with characteristic pattern-forming
properties; (2) replication experiments aiming at the differentiation of four
homeopathic preparations at the same potency levels (2x-6x); and (3) control
experiments performed on three preparations. The DEM experimental protocol
consisted of the evaporation of droplets of the analyzed potency per se, placed on
microscope slides and in controlled conditions. The resulting patterns were
photographed and subjected to computerized image analysis.
RESULTS: The screening experiments yielded a wide variety of patterns.

Homeopathic preparations of mineral origin showed the largest variety of forms,
whereas potencies of vegetal origin mostly created dendritic patterns, probably due to
diffusion-limited aggregation. The here-analyzed image analysis variables (gray-level
distribution, entropy, and inverse difference moment) allowed a highly significant
differentiation of patterns prepared from four substances (Echinacea, Baptisia, Luffa,
and Spongia) at the same potency levels in the range 2x to 4x, whereas patterns
obtained from potencies 5x and 6x could no longer be differentiated and resembled
the pattern of pure solute (purified water). The control experiments showed
reasonable experimental model stability.
CONCLUSIONS: DEM seems to be a promising tool for qualitative

phenomenological characterization of homeopathic preparations in low potency. We
propose the application of the current experimental model for investigating further
research topics in this field, such as the comparison of potencies versus simple
dilutions or the contribution of component remedies to the patterns formed by
homeopathic combination medicines.
Investigation of the Origin of Voltage Generation in Potentized Homeopathic Medicine

through Raman Spectroscopy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND: For the study of homeopathic medicines in proper perspective, emerging

techniques in material science are being used. Vibrational spectroscopy is one such tool for
providing information on different states of hydrogen bonding as an effect of potentization.
The associated change in electrical properties is also correlated with this effect.
OBJECTIVE: From the vibrational spectra, the changes in hydrogen bonding due to dilution
followed by unidirectional vigorous shaking (together termed potentization) of 91% ethanol
and two homeopathic medicines Chininum purum and Acidum benzoicum have been studied.
The aim was to correlate the result with the change in the electrical properties of the system.
METHODS: Raman spectroscopy was used to study the vibrational spectra. A U-shaped
glass tube (electrochemical cell), where one arm contained bi-distilled water and the other
arm alcohol/homeopathic medicine (the arms being separated by a platinum foil), was used
to measure the voltage generated across two symmetrically placed platinum electrodes.
RESULTS: For all samples, it was observed that potentization affected the intensity of OH
stretching bands at the frequencies 3240 cm-1, 3420 cm-1 and 3620 cm-1, corresponding to
strong hydrogen bond, weak hydrogen bond and broken hydrogen bond, respectively. With
the increase in potency, in the presence and absence of the two medicines in ethanol, the
number of OH groups linked by strong hydrogen bonds decreased, while the number of OH
groups with weak hydrogen bonds increased. With the increase in potentization, the number
of OH groups with broken hydrogen bonds showed a difference in the presence and absence
of the medicine.The voltage measurements for ethanol show that, with succussion, the
magnitude of voltage increased with the two medicines at lower potencies, but not at higher
potency where the voltage is lower. Acidum benzoicum, which is acidic in nature, had higher
voltage values (113mV, 130 mV and 118 mV at 6C, 30C and 200C, respectively), compared
with Chininum purum, which is basic in nature (20 mV, 85 mV and 65 mV at 6C, 30C and
200C, respectively).
CONCLUSION: The experimental results indicate a correlation between the vibrational and
electrical properties of the homeopathic medicines Acidum benzoicum and Chininum purum at
different potencies.
Biological Actions, Electrical Conductance and Silicon-

Containing Microparticles of Arsenicum Album Prepared in
Plastic and Glass Vials.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION: According to the "silica hypothesis"

formulated to explain homeopathy, the information of starting
materials would be transferred to cells by silica nanoparticles
detached from the glassware walls by serial dilution and agitation
through epitaxy. We compared the biological activity, electrical
current and silicon microparticle content (by means of scanning
electron microscopy/energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy) of high
dilutions (HDs) of arsenic prepared in plastic and glass vials to
investigate the role of silica in their biological effects in vitro.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Co-cultures of macrophages and

yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) were treated with different HDs of
arsenic prepared in plastic and glass vials. Macrophage morphology,
phagocytosis index, nitric oxide (NO), and cytokine production
were evaluated.
RESULTS: Measurable amounts of silicon microparticles were

detected only in the HDs prepared in glass vials, but ultra-
centrifugation eliminated them. Specific and non-specific results
were observed. Non-specific pro-inflammatory effects were seen in
all dilutions prepared in plastic vials, including elevation of pro-
inflammatory cytokines, NO and macrophage phagocytic index.
Only the 200th centesimal dilution of arsenic produced specific
decrease in interleukin-6 production in macrophages, and it was
independent of the vial type or the presence of microparticles of
silica in the medicine samples. The nature of the vials had an
impact on the electric flow in the respective fluids.
CONCLUSION: The non-specific, pro-inflammatory effects might

be attributed to organic residuals detached from the vials' plastic
walls during manipulation. Instead, specific silica-independent
effects of the homeopathic medicine can be attributed to the
decrease of interleukin-6 after treatment with the 200th centesimal
dilution of arsenic.

Importance of Temperament in Individualized Homeopathic Prescription: Evaluation

by an Open, Randomized, Pilot Trial.

Abstract
BACKGROUND: The importance of temperament in the selection of an individualized

homeopathic medicine has not been evaluated systematically. The current study explored
this under-researched area.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective, open, randomized (1:1), two parallel

arms, pilot trial was performed on patients suffering from various chronic diseases. Each
patient's temperament was assessed using a newly developed "temperament diagnostic
questionnaire". Outcome measures were health status using the EQ-5D-5L questionnaire
and a visual analog scale (VAS) of patient's self-rated health, measured at baseline and at
3 months. Homeopathic medicines were prescribed on the basis of individualization,
randomly with or without accounting for individual temperament, and patients grouped
accordingly (temperament(+) and temperament(-)). Baseline comparability of the two
groups was checked, followed by analysis of group differences. A p-value < 0.01 was
considered as statistically significant.
RESULTS: Fifty protocol-compliant patients were analyzed. The two groups were
comparable at baseline. Over 3 months of intervention, there was significant
improvement (p < 0.01) in each group. Though improvement in the EQ-5D-5L score was
greater in the temperament(+) group (mean difference, 2.4; 95% confidence interval [CI],
0.2 to 4.5), the change did not achieve the threshold for statistical significance (p = 0.029).
Improvement in VAS score was significantly greater in the temperament(+) group than in
temperament(-) patients (mean difference, 15.2; 95% CI, 4.9 to 25.4; p = 0.004).
CONCLUSION: Considering temperament as a key element of individualized

prescription may enhance health improvement from homeopathic treatment in chronic
diseases. Independently replicated rigorous trials with validated scales are warranted.

Why Is the Healing of Emotional Problems So Difficult?

Abstract
BACKGROUND: This article deals with the difficulties involved in the healing of
emotional problems. It focuses on the homeopathic treatment combined with other
therapeutic approaches.
FINDINGS: In working with emotional problems, homeopathy focuses mainly on the

action of the homeopathic medicine. Arguably, it over-relies on the healing power of the
medicine and gives less attention to the importance of working dynamically with the
patient's emotional problems. This article suggests a more balanced approach that combines
between these two facets of the healing process, giving more weight to the role of potencies.
CONCLUSION: Emotional healing becomes more plausible when the patient's inner
strength attains the level of strength of the disturbance, represented by "level of potency",
which allows the patient to cope with his/her disturbance more successfully.
Homeopathy and Periodontal Treatment in Type II Diabetic Patients: a 1-Year

Randomized Clinical Trial.

Abstract
Chronic periodontitis (CP) and Diabetes mellitus type 2 (DMII) are chronic diseases usually
treated by conventional practices. On the other hand, homeopathy can help to treat many
different diseases. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of homeopathy (H) as an
adjunct for non-surgical periodontal therapy (NSPT) in individuals with DMII and CP.
Eighty individuals with CP and DM II, of both sexes and aged between 32 and 70 years,
participated in this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study. They were divided
into two groups: control group (CG) and the test group (TG), and both groups received the
NSPT. TG also received homeopathic therapy, including Berberis, Mercurius
solubilis/Belladonna/Hepar sulphur and Pyrogenium, while CG received placebo. Clinical
and laboratorial examinations were evaluated at baseline and after 1, 6 and 12 months of
treatment. Both groups showed significant improvement throughout the study, for most of the
parameters studied, but TG presented significative gain of CAL at 1 and 12 months compared
to CG. Mean glucose and glycated hemoglobin significantly decreased in both groups after 6
and 12 months. However, there was a significantly further reduction of these parameters in
TG, as compared to CG. In conclusion, homeopathy as supplement of NSPT may further
improve health condition, including glycemic control, in DMII patients with CP.
Efficacy of individualized homeopathic treatment of insomnia: Double-blind, randomized,

placebo-controlled clinical trial.

Abstract
BACKGROUND: Insomnia is the most common sleep-related complaint associated with
impaired day-time functioning, reduced quality of life, increased morbidity and substantial
societal cost. We evaluated whether individualized homeopathy (IH) could produce significant
effect beyond placebo in treatment of insomnia.
METHODS: In this double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, two parallel arms trial, 60
patients were randomized to receive either IH/verum or control/placebo (1:1). Patient-
administered sleep diary (6 items; 1: latency to fall asleep, 2: minutes awake in middle of night,
3: minutes awake too early, 4: hours spent in bed, 5: total sleep time in hours, and 6: sleep
efficiency) and Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) were taken as the primary and secondary
outcomes respectively, measured at baseline, and after 3 months.
RESULTS: Five patients dropped out (verum: 2, control: 3). Intention to treat sample (n = 60)
was analyzed. Trial arms were comparable at baseline. In the verum group, except sleep diary
item 3 (P = 0.371), rest of the outcomes improved significantly (all P < 0.01). In the control
group, there were significant improvements in diary item 6 and ISI score (P < 0.01) and just
significant improvement in item 5 (P = 0.018). Group differences were significant for items 4,
5 and 6 (P < 0.01) and just significant (P = 0.014) for ISI score with moderate to large effect
sizes; but non-significant (P > 0.01) for rest of the outcomes.
CONCLUSION: IH seemed to produce significantly better effect than placebo. Rigorous trials
and independent replications are warranted.
The role of homoeopathic treatment in women suffering from post-caesarean backache: An

open observational clinical trial

Context: An open observational trial was carried out at National Institute of Homoeopathy,
India, to assess the possible effects of individualised Homoeopathy in individuals suffering
from post-caesarean backache. Aim: The aim of the study was to find the role of
homoeopathic treatment in individuals suffering from post-caesarean backache. Methods:
Fifty subjects were enrolled. The Short-Form McGill Pain Questionnaire (SF-MPQ) and
Oswestry Low Back Pain Disability Questionnaire (ODQ) were used as the outcome
measures, assessed at baseline and after 3 months of treatment. Medicines prescribed followed
homoeopathic principles. Non-parametric Wilcoxon signed rank test was applied to compare
the dependent observations. P < 0.05 two-tailed was considered statistically significant.
Results: Five subjects dropped out and 45 completed the trial. Intention-to-treat sample (n =
50) was analysed. There were statistically significant reductions in pain rating index percentage
score (median 83.3 (IQR 66.7 to 100) vs. median 66.7 (IQR 33.3 to 71.1), P < 0.001); visual
analogue scale score (median 7.0 (IQR 6.0 to 8.0) vs. median 6.0 (IQR 4.8 to 7.0), P < 0.001);
present pain index score (median 3.0 (IQR 2.0 to 3.0) vs. median 2.0 (IQR 2.0 to 3.0), P =
0.019) and ODQ% score (median 44.0 (IQR 39.5 to 50.0) vs. median 39.0 (IQR 31.9 to 44.0),
P < 0.001) over 3 months of treatment. Natrum muriaticum (n = 11, 22%); Staphysagria (n = 8,
16%); Bryonia alba and Rhus toxicodendron (n = 6 each, 12%) and Pulsatilla nigricans (n = 4, 8%)
were prescribed frequently. Conclusion: Indicated homoeopathic medicines reduced SF-MPQ
and ODQ scores. Further randomised trials are warranted with enhanced methodological
rigour.

Effect of Adjuvant Homeopathy with Usual Care in Management of

Thrombocytopenia Due to Dengue: A Comparative Cohort Study.
Abstract
BACKGROUND: Dengue is an emerging threat to public health. At present, no clear

modalities are available for the prevention and management of thrombocytopenia due
to dengue. This article reports the clinical outcomes of integrative homeopathic care in
a hospital setting during a severe outbreak of dengue in New Delhi, India, during the
period September to December 2015.
METHODS: Based on preference, 138 patients received a homeopathic medicine along

with usual care (H+UC), and 145 patients received usual care (UC) alone. Assessment
of thrombocytopenia (platelet count < 100,000/mm3) was the main outcome measure.
Kaplan-Meier analysis enabled comparison of the time taken to reach a platelet count
of 100,000/mm3.
RESULTS: There was a statistically significantly greater rise in platelet count on day 1
of follow-up in the H+UC group compared with UC alone (mean difference = 12,337;
95% confidence interval [CI], 5,421 to 19,252; p = 0.001). This trend persisted until day
5 (mean difference = 14,809; 95% CI, 1,615 to 28,004; p = 0.02). The time taken to reach
a platelet count of 100,000/mm3 was nearly 2 days earlier in the H+UC group
compared with UC alone (H+UC: 3.44 days ± standard error of the mean [SEM] 0.18;
95% CI, 3.08 to 3.80; UC: 5.28 days ± SEM 0.29; 95% CI, 4.71 to 5.86; p < 0.001).
CONCLUSION: These results suggest a positive role of adjuvant homeopathy in

thrombocytopenia due to dengue. Randomized controlled trials may be conducted to
obtain more insight into the comparative effectiveness of this integrative approach.

Homeopathic medicine of Melissa officinalis combined or not with Phytolacca

decandra in the treatment of possible sleep bruxism in children: A crossover
randomized triple-blinded controlled clinical trial.

Abstract
PURPOSE: The present randomized controlled clinical trial evaluated the efficacy
of homeopathic medicines of Melissa officinalis (MO), Phytolacca decandra (PD),
and the combination of both in the treatment of possible sleep bruxism (SB) in
children.
STUDY DESIGN: Patients (n = 52) (6.62 ± 1.79 years old) were selected based on
the parents report of SB. The study comprised a crossover design that included 4
phases of 30-day treatment (Placebo; MO 12c; PD 12c; and MO 12c + PD 12c), with
a wash-out period of 15 days between treatments.
METHODS: At baseline and after each phase, the Visual Analogic Scale (VAS) was
used as the primary outcome measure to evaluate the influence of treatments on the
reduction of SB. The following additional outcome measures were used: a children's
sleep diary with parent's/guardian's perceptions of their children's sleep quality, the
trait of anxiety scale (TAS) to identify changes in children's anxiety profile, and side
effects reports. Data were analyzed by ANOVA with repeated measures followed by
Post Hoc LSD test.
RESULTS: Significant reduction of SB was observed in VAS after the use of Placebo
(-1.72 ± 0.29), MO (-2.36 ± 0.36), PD (-1.44 ± 0.28) and MO + PD (-2.21 ± 0.30)
compared to baseline (4.91 ± 1.87). MO showed better results compared to PD
(p = 0.018) and Placebo (p = 0.050), and similar result compared to MO+PD
(p = 0.724). The sleep diary results and TAS results were not influenced by any of the
treatments. No side effects were observed after treatments.
CONCLUSION: MO showed promising results in the treatment of possible sleep

bruxism in children, while the association of PD did not improve MO results.
Impact of a homeopathic medication on upper respiratory tract infections in COPD

patients: Results of an observational, prospective study (EPOXILO).

Abstract
BACKGROUND: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a progressive lung

disorder in which airflow is obstructed. Viral or bacterial upper respiratory tract infections
(URTIs) may lead to exacerbations. Homeopathic medication administration to COPD
patients during the influenza-exposure period may help to reduce the frequency of common
URTIs.
METHODS: This prospective, observational, multicenter study was carried out in

Cantabria, Spain. Patients with COPD were divided into two groups: group 1 received
conventional treatment + homeopathic medication (diluted and dynamized extract of duck
liver and heart; Boiron) (OG); group 2 received conventional treatment only (CG). The
primary endpoint was the number of URTIs between the 4-5 months follow up (mean
4.72 ± 0.96) from basal to last visit. Secondary endpoints included the duration of URTIs,
number and duration of COPD exacerbations, use of COPD drugs, changes in quality of life
(QoL), compliance, and adverse events (AEs).
RESULTS: 219 patients were analyzed (OG = 109, CG = 110). There was a significant
reduction in mean number of URTIs during the follow-up period in OG compared to CG
(0.514 ± 0.722 vs. 1.037 ± 1.519, respectively; p = 0.014). Logistic regression analysis showed
a 3.3-times higher probability of suffering ≥2 URTI episodes in CG (p = 0.003, n = 72). OG
patients having ≥1 URTI also had a significant reduction in mean URTI duration per
episode (3.57 ± 2.44 days OG vs. 5.22 ± 4.17 days CG; p = 0.012). There was no significant
difference in mean number of exacerbations, mean duration of exacerbations, or QoL
between OG and CG. There was a greater decrease in proportion of patients using
corticosteroids for exacerbations between baseline and visit 2 in OG compared to CG (22.1%
vs. 7.5% fewer respectively, p = 0.005). Exacerbator phenotype patients had a significant
decrease in number of URTIs (0.54 ± 0.72 vs. 1.31 ± 1.81; p = 0.011), and fewer COPD
exacerbations (0.9 ± 1.3 vs. 1.5 ± 1.7; p = 0.037) in OG vs. CG, respectively.
CONCLUSIONS: Homeopathic medication use during the influenza-exposure period may

have a beneficial impact at reducing URTIs' number and duration in COPD patients and at
reducing the number of COPD exacerbations in patients with the exacerbator phenotype.
Further studies are needed to confirm the effects observed in this study.
Electronic Registration in Complementary/Homeopathic Medical Practice with

Identification of 'Best Homeopathic Cases': A Pilot Study.

Abstract
BACKGROUND: Practice-based registration could identify 'general' and

'homeopathic' prognostic factors for therapeutic success in patients who seek
complementary and alternative medicine (CAM)/homeopathic treatment.
Identification of 'best homeopathic cases' within a database could inform clinical
research and improve homeopathic practice.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the feasibility of registration in daily

CAM/homeopathic practice, evaluate patient-reported outcome measures and tools
for identifying 'best homeopathic cases' and to make recommendations for an
electronic database.
METHODS: In 2015 and 2016, 25 homeopathic doctors registered details of a

maximum of 20 patients each, with 6 months of follow-up (extended follow-up for
'best homeopathic cases'), in Excel or in the Homeopathic Administration and
Registration Program (HARP) database. Informed consent was obtained from each
patient. Patient-perceived change of main complaint was measured by a 7-point
Likert scale. Best homeopathic cases were defined by treatment with one
homeopathic medicine, ≥ 2 months of follow-up, result score +2 to +4 on a 9-point
Likert scale by the doctor, and by changes that could be attributed to the
homeopathic medicine. Association between scores for change of main complaint
and scores for 'best homeopathic case' was analysed by the Kruskal gamma test.
RESULTS: Three-hundred and ninety-nine patients were included. In 49.1%, the

main complaint was present for ≥ 2 years. The most common diagnosis was 'fatigue'
(N = 56; 14%). Major improvement in the main complaint (score +3) was reported by
22 to 26% at consecutive follow-up visits. One-hundred and ninety-six patients were
treated with a single homeopathic medicine, among whom 66 'best homeopathic
cases' were identified. The correlation between patient-reported changes of main
complaint and assessment by the doctor was significant (gamma = 0.832; p < 0.001).
CONCLUSIONS: Registration of (co-)diagnoses, chronicity, treatments and

outcomes in homeopathic practice with identification of 'best homeopathic cases' is
feasible, using the tools provided. A user-friendly electronic database for efficient
recording is recommended.
Reasons for Use of and Experiences with Homeopathic Treatment as an Adjunct to

Usual Cancer Care: Results of a Small Qualitative Study.

Abstract
BACKGROUND: A significant proportion of patients with cancer consult with

homeopaths. No former qualitative study has reported on experiences with homeopathy
in this patient group. This study aimed to learn about the reasons for, and experiences
with, treatment provided by homeopaths among Danish patients with cancer.
METHODS: A small qualitative semi-structured interview study was carried out to

collect preliminary knowledge to learn about reasons for and experiences with treatment
provided by homeopaths as an adjunct to usual care among patients with cancer.
Thematic analysis was used for the development of themes.
RESULTS: Five patients, diagnosed with cancer, were interviewed. On the basis of
qualitative interviews five themes emerged: concerns and hopes, obstacles and support,
internal health locus of control, whole person approach, and improved well-being.
CONCLUSION: The cancer patients in this study sought homeopathy to address their
hopes and concerns and to help them face obstacles and find support. They were
actively taking responsibility for their own health and valued the whole person approach
used by their homeopaths. Participants reported improved well-being both at the
physical and mental levels. The results provide a basis for further research to learn more
from patients' experiences with this intervention. Such knowledge could potentially be
helpful to improve healthcare practitioners' communication with patients, and thereby
patients' overall care.
Does a homeopathic medicine reduce hot flushes induced by adjuvant endocrine

therapy in localized breast cancer patients? A multicenter randomized placebo-
controlled phase III trial.

Abstract
PURPOSE: Endocrine therapy (ET) used to reduce the risk of recurrence in hormone
receptor-expressing disease (75% of breast cancers) is associated with worsening of
climacteric symptoms with a negative impact on quality of life (QoL). Homeopathy
might allow a better management of hot flushes (HF).
METHODS: In this multicenter randomized double-blind placebo-controlled phase III

study (ClinicalTrials.gov NCT01246427), we enrolled ≥ 18 years old women with
histologically proven non metastatic localized breast cancer, with Eastern Cooperative
Oncology Group-Performance Status (ECOG-PS) ≤ 1, treated for at least 1 month with
adjuvant ET, and complaining about moderate to severe HF. Patients should not be
scheduled for chemotherapy or radiotherapy, and had no associated pathology known
to induce HF. After a 2- to 4-week placebo administration, we randomly assigned (1:1)
patients with HFS ≥ 10 using an interactive web-based centralized platform to BRN-01
homeopathic medicine complex (Actheane®) in arm A or Placebo (Arm P).
Randomization was stratified by adjuvant ET (taxoxifen/aromatase inhibitor) and
recruiting site. HF scores (HFS) were calculated as the mean of HF frequencies before
randomization, at 4, and at 8 weeks post-randomization (pre-, 4w,- and 8w-) weighted
by a 4-level intensity scale. Primary endpoint was assessed at 4-week post-
randomization, as the variation between pre- and 4w-HFS. Secondary endpoints
included HFS variation between pre- and 8w-HFS, compliance and tolerance assessed
8 weeks after randomization, and QoL and satisfaction assessed at 4- and 8-week post-
randomization.
RESULTS: Two hundred ninety-nine patients were included, and 138 (46.2%)
randomized (A, 65; P, 73). Median 4w-HFS absolute variation (A, - 2.9; P, - 2.5 points,
p = 0.756) and relative decrease (A, - 17%; P, - 15%, p = 0.629) were not statistically
different. However, 4w-HFS decreased for 46 (75%) in A vs 48 (68%) patients in P
arm. 4w-QoL was stable or improved for respectively 43 (72%) vs 51 (74%) patients
(p = 0.470).
CONCLUSIONS: The efficacy endpoint was not reached, and BRN-01

administration was not demonstrated as an efficient treatment to alleviate HF
symptoms due to adjuvant ET in breast cancer patients. However, the study drug
administration led to decreased HFS with a positive impact on QoL. Without any
recommended treatment to treat or alleviate the HF-related disabling symptoms,
Actheane® could be a promising option, providing an interesting support for better
adherence to ET, thereby reducing the risk of recurrence with a good tolerance profile.

Explaining Homeopathy with Quantum Electrodynamics.
Abstract
BACKGROUND: Every living organism is an open system operating far from thermodynamic
equilibrium and exchanging energy, matter and information with an external environment. These
exchanges are performed through non-linear interactions of billions of different biological components,
at different levels, from the quantum to the macro-dimensional. The concept of quantum coherence is
an inherent property of living cells, used for long-range interactions such as synchronization of cell
division processes. There is support from recent advances in quantum biology, which demonstrate that
coherence, as a state of order of matter coupled with electromagnetic (EM) fields, is one of the key
quantum phenomena supporting life dynamics. Coherent phenomena are well explained by quantum
field theory (QFT), a well-established theoretical framework in quantum physics. Water is essential for
life, being the medium used by living organisms to carry out various biochemical reactions and playing
a fundamental role in coherent phenomena.
METHODS: Quantum electrodynamics (QED), which is the relativistic QFT of electrodynamics,

deals with the interactions between EM fields and matter. QED provides theoretical models and
experimental frameworks for the emergence and dynamics of coherent structures, even in living
organisms. This article provides a model of multi-level coherence for living organisms in which fractal
phase oscillations of water are able to link and regulate a biochemical reaction. A mathematical
approach, based on the eigenfunctions of Laplace operator in hyper-structures, is explored as a
valuable framework to simulate and explain the oneness dynamics of multi-level coherence in life. The
preparation process of a homeopathic medicine is analyzed according to QED principles, thus
providing a scientific explanation for the theoretical model of "information transfer" from the
substance to the water solution. A subsequent step explores the action of a homeopathicmedicine in a
living organism according to QED principles and the phase-space attractor's dynamics.
RESULTS: According to the developed model, all levels of a living organism organelles, cells, tissues,
organs, organ systems, whole organism-are characterized by their own specific wave functions, whose
phases are perfectly orchestrated in a multi-level coherence oneness. When this multi-level coherence is
broken, a disease emerges. An example shows how a homeopathic medicine can bring back a patient
from a disease state to a healthy one. In particular, by adopting QED, it is argued that in the
preparation of homeopathic medicines, the progressive dilution/succussion processes create the
conditions for the emergence of coherence domains (CDs) in the aqueous solution. Those domains
code the original substance information (in terms of phase oscillations) and therefore they can transfer
said information (by phase resonance) to the multi-level coherent structures of the living organism.
CONCLUSIONS: We encourage that QED principles and explanations become embodied in the
fundamental teachings of the homeopathicmethod, thus providing the homeopath with a firm
grounding in the practice of rational medicine. Systematic efforts in this direction should include
multiple disciplines, such as quantum physics, quantum biology, conventional
and homeopathic medicine and psychology.
Nineteenth-Century Homeopathic Materia Medica Texts Predict Source Materials

Whose Physiological Actions Influence Thyroid Activity.
Abstract
INTRODUCTION: The homeopathic materia medica contains hundreds of thousands of

observations collected over the course of two centuries. It includes both clinical
observations of potentized medicines and observations of the actions of potentized
medicines on healthy subjects (provings). This current study was undertaken to determine
the degree to which observations within the materia medica were associated with the
physiological mechanisms for thyroid activity-inhibiting substances in their undiluted state.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four specific symptoms for iodine deficiency were
selected to describe the hypothyroid state: (1) generalized aggravation by or sensitivity to
cold; (2) chronic painless hoarseness; (3) goiter; (4) painless diffuse non-scarring alopecia.
Symptom representation for the four selected symptoms within the homeopathic materia
medica was compared for 2 halogen inhibitors, for 3 substances that influence thyroid
hormone target tissues, for 6 substances known or suspected to increase thyroid-stimulating
hormone or decrease thyroid hormone levels, and for 11 substances not known to inhibit
thyroid activity. To avoid knowledge bias, only those compilations of materia medica
whose publication dates preceded the discoveries of crucial aspects of thyroid physiology
were used as source materials for investigation.
RESULTS: Homeopathic medicines derived from 11 substances with mechanisms for

inhibition of thyroid activity were more likely to exhibit selected symptoms than the
medicines derived from the 11 substances without known physiological mechanisms for
thyroid activity inhibition. The difference between groups was analyzed via the Mann-
Whitney non-parametric U test and was statistically significant to p < 0.01. After
observations obtained from provings alone were removed from analysis, the difference
remained significant to p < 0.01. Only the two halogen inhibitors of iodine (bromine and
fluoric acid) and one of the influencers of thyroid hormone target tissue (calcium
carbonate) were significantly goitrogenic.
CONCLUSIONS: With respect to thyroid activity inhibition, there is a statistically

significant association between observations recorded within the homeopathic materia
medica and the expected physiological mechanisms for the corresponding undiluted
substances.
The Bell Tolls for Homeopathy: Time for Change in the Training and Practice of North
American Naturopathic Physicians.

Abstract
North American naturopathic medicine is a distinct form of practice that is woven into the
larger fabric of integrative medicine; in a number of US states and Canadian provinces,
naturopathic doctors enjoy a wide scope of practice, including the ability to make diagnoses,
order tests, use medical technology, write prescription drugs, and perform minor surgeries.
However, the basic premise of naturopathic medicine and its guiding principles-considering the
whole person and supporting healthy lifestyle behaviors-is the unifying approach in clinical
practice. In the 1970s, homeopathy-considered in many circles to be a hypothesis-driven, fringe
form of alternative medicine-became embedded into the training and practice of North
American naturopathic doctors. Since the earliest days of its theory (circa
1800), homeopathy has escaped, and continues to escape, biological plausibility; however, the
persistence of this modality (and the insistence by both its consumers and practitioners that it
provides benefit) speaks to the role of expectations, beliefs, values, agency, context effects, and
the placebo-at-large. It is our contention that the progression of professional naturopathic
medicine in the 21st century requires a major transition in how it approaches the subject
of homeopathy. We propose that students should be encouraged to critically analyze the tenets
of homeopathy, its lesser known history, and the idea of homeopathy as a biomedicine that
simply awaits untold chemicophysical mechanisms. Furthermore, the modality
of homeopathy should be incorporated into the larger context of placebo studies, narrative
medicine, ethics, and psychotherapeutic techniques.
Isopathic Use of Auto-Sarcode of DNA as Anti-Miasmatic Homeopathic Medicine and

Modulator of Gene Expression?

Abstract
INTRODUCTION: In addition to the four pillars of homeopathy, vitalism and the

miasmatic theory are often used to explain the health-disease process. According to
Hahnemann's concepts, homeopathic miasms are the main obstacle to the cure of chronic
diseases, with psora being the fundamental cause of all forms of diseases. According to
modern genetics, the disease-promoting epigenetic alterations are the fundamental cause of
the manifestation of chronic diseases.
OBJECTIVE: This article develops a philosophical-scientific correlation between chronic
miasms and disease-promoting epigenetic modifications, aiming to justify the isopathic use
of auto-sarcode of an individual's DNA as homeopathic medicine.
RESULTS: Based on the study of homeopathic doctrine and epigenetics, a conceptual and
functional correlation is observed between homeopathic chronic miasms and disease-
promoting epigenetic modifications. Additionally, several experimental studies suggest
that homeopathy's mechanism of action may be by modulating gene expression.
CONCLUSIONS: By the philosophical-scientific correlations described, it is inferred that
disease-promoting epigenetic alterations are the biological representation of the chronic
miasms, suggesting the isopathic use of auto-sarcode of DNA as homeopathic therapeutic
modulator of gene expression for the management of chronic diseases.
Efficacy of a Homeopathic Medicine of Capsicum frutescens L. (Solanaceae) in the Treatment of

Hot Flashes in Menopausal Women: A Phase-2 Randomized Controlled Trial.

Abstract
BACKGROUND: Hot flashes are common in women during menopause, and are an important
cause of discomfort, increasing the number of medical appointments. Hormone replacement therapy
is an effective treatment, but it can bring undesirable consequences. Alternative treatments exist but
they are not universally accepted or effective. The ingestion of malagueta peppers (popular name for
fruits of Capsicum frutescens L., Solanaceae) causes sensations similar to those experienced by women
during hot flashes. Using the homeopathic law of similars (let like be cured by like), we hypothesized
that a homeopathic remedy made of malagueta peppers can be effective in alleviating menopausal
hot flashes. We named this remedy Malagueta.
METHODS: This randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind, phase-2 clinical trial was designed
to test the hypothesis that, in menopausal women, the homeopathic medicine Malagueta (30 CH),
compared with placebo, will significantly reduce the intensity of hot flashes, after 4 weeks of
treatment. The primary outcome was the intensity of hot flashes, measured by the Measure Yourself
Medical Outcome Profile (MYMOP) instrument. A total of 40 women were enrolled in the study, 20
in each group.
RESULTS: The effect of Malagueta on the primary outcome, the intensity of hot flashes, assessed by
MYMOP, was superior to that of placebo over the 4 weeks of treatment, with worsening in both
groups after treatment was interrupted (after week 4, p < 0.001 in ordinal logistic regression). The
odds ratio for treatment response (reduction of at least three MYMOP categories) was 2.78 (95%
confidence interval, 0.77 to 10.05). Treatment with Malagueta, compared with placebo, also reduced
the intensity of the secondary symptoms (p = 0.001) and improved level of activity (p = 0.025) and
well-being (p = 0.008).
CONCLUSION: The homeopathic medicine of Capsicum frutescens (Malagueta) was superior to

placebo in reducing the intensity of hot flashes in menopausal women after 4 weeks of treatment.

symptoms of a patient guides this process. Available data suggest that homeopathy has potency not
only to treat various types of cancers but also to reduce the side effects caused by standard
therapeutic modalities like chemotherapy, radiotherapy or surgery. Although homeopathy has been
widely used for management of cancers, its efficacy is still under question. In the present review, the
anti-cancer effect of various homeopathic drugs against different kinds of cancers has been discussed
and future course of action has also been suggested.

Evolution of homeopathy: A scientometric analysis of global homeopathy literature

between 1975 and 2017.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE: Scientometrics is the evaluation of scientific literature in a certain field.

Although popularity and use of homeopathy have increased in the recent years, scientific
literature lacks a bibliometric or scientometric evaluation of homeopathy literature.
METHODS: We collected all data of this study from four databases provided by Web of
Science. All documents published between 1975 and 2017 were included. The keywords
we searched for in detail were "homeopathy", "homeopathic", "homoeopathy" and
"homoeopathic". We used Spearman's correlation test to investigate a possible correlation
between publication numbers or the productivity and features of the countries. We
created infographics and infomaps by using GunnMap and VOSviewer sources. Gross
domestic product (GDP) ranking data of countries was procured from The World Data
Bank.
RESULTS: Our search retrieved a total of 4183 articles. The great majority of
documents were original articles (n = 3043, 72.75%). The UK
dominated homeopathy literature with 950 articles followed by the USA, Germany, India
and Brazil (n = 636, 590, 277 and 246 items, respectively). Switzerland was found to be
most productive country (20.41) followed by the UK, Norway and Israel (14.35, 11.31
and 8.41, respectively). University of Exeter (UK) was the leading institutions with 204
items (4.88%). Most productive journal was Homeopathydominating and covering 24%
of all literature. We detected very high correlation between publication number and
citation number by year (r = 0.95, p < 0.001). A high correlation was measured between
gross domestic product (GDP) per capita and productivity of the countries. A moderate
correlation was measured between GDP and publication number of the countries
(r = 0.66 and p < 0.001). In scientometric network analysis, the USA, the UK and
Germany were noted to be three major association centers.
CONCLUSIONS: We detected that developed countries

dominated homeopathy literature and we suggest that physicians from least-developed
and developing countries should be funded and encouraged to carry
out homeopathy studies.
Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomised, Other-than-Placebo

Controlled, Trials of Non-Individualised Homeopathic Treatment.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION: This study focuses on randomised controlled trials (RCTs) of non-

individualised homeopathic treatment (NIHT) in which the control (comparator) group
was other than placebo (OTP).
OBJECTIVES: To determine the comparative effectiveness of NIHT on health-related

outcomes in adults and children for any given condition that has been the subject of at
least one OTP-controlled trial. For each study, to assess its risk of bias and to determine
whether its study attitude was predominantly 'pragmatic' or 'explanatory'.
METHODS: Systematic review. For each eligible trial, published in the peer-reviewed
literature up to the end of 2016, we assessed its risk of bias (internal validity) using the
seven-domain Cochrane tool, and its relative pragmatic or explanatory attitude (external
validity) using the 10-domain PRECIS tool. We grouped RCTs by whether these
examined IHT as alternative treatment (study design 1a), adjunctively with another
intervention (design 1b), or compared with no intervention (design 2). RCTs were sub-
categorised as superiority trials or equivalence/non-inferiority trials. For each RCT, we
designated a single 'main outcome measure' to use in meta-analysis: 'effect size' was
reported as odds ratio (OR; values > 1 favouring homeopathy) or standardised mean
difference (SMD; values < 0 favouring homeopathy).
RESULTS: Seventeen RCTs, representing 15 different medical conditions, were eligible

for study. Three of the trials were more pragmatic than explanatory, two were more
explanatory than pragmatic, and 12 were equally pragmatic and explanatory. Fourteen
trials were rated 'high risk of bias' overall; the other three trials were rated 'uncertain risk
of bias' overall. Ten trials had data that were extractable for analysis. Significant
heterogeneity undermined the planned meta-analyses or their meaningful interpretation.
For the three equivalence or non-inferiority trials with extractable data, the small, non-
significant, pooled effect size (SMD = 0.08; p = 0.46) was consistent with a conclusion
that NIHT did not differ from treatment by a comparator (Ginkgo biloba or betahistine) for
vertigo or (cromolyn sodium) for seasonal allergic rhinitis.
CONCLUSIONS: The current data preclude a decisive conclusion about the

comparative effectiveness of NIHT. Generalisability of findings is restricted by the
limited external validity identified overall. The highest intrinsic quality was observed in
the equivalence and non-inferiority trials of NIHT.

Individualised Homeopathic Therapy in ANCA Negative Rapidly Progressive
Necrotising Crescentic Glomerulonephritis with Severe Renal Insufficiency - A Case

Abstract
Anti-Neutrophil Cytoplasmic Antibody (ANCA)-negative Rapidly Progressive

Glomerulonephritis (RPGN) is a severe form of autoimmune renal injury with a bleak
prognosis. A 60-year-old Indian woman was treated with classical homeopathy for
ANCA-negative RPGN, and after one year of treatment, serum creatinine and other
parameters indicating renal injury dropped steadily despite the withdrawal of
immunosuppressive drugs; renal dialysis, which was conducted twice a week initially, was
made rarer and stopped after one year. Classical homeopathy may be considered a
potential therapeutic modality in severe pathologies. Controlled studies are required to
establish further the extent to which classical homeopathy may relieve patients from
procedures such as dialysis that cause considerable physical and economic discomfort.
Advanced Presentation of Homeopathically treated Giant Melanoma: A Case Report.

with a 9.7cm × 8.3cm melanoma on her foot, which impeded her ability to walk. The patient

Antiproliferative potential and phenolic compounds of infusions and essential oil of
chamomile cultivated with homeopathy.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Chamomilla recutita (Asteraceae) is

used worldwide as a soothing, anti-inflammatory and aromatherapy. In Brazil, it is one of
the most cultivated medicinal species. However, the cultivation form may alter the
production of compounds in the secondary metabolism and compromise the therapeutic
purpose of this species.
AIM OF THE STUDY: Evaluation of antiproliferative and genotoxic effects of infusions

and essential oil of chamomile, cultivated with homeopathy, on the cell cycle of Allium
cepa, as well as the determination of the phenolic compounds present in the infusions of
the chamomile inflorescences.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: For the Allium cepa test, two concentrations of 10 and
40 g L-1 of inflorescences of chamomile were used for the preparation of the infusions and
essential oil diluted to 0.10%, referring to the six treatments obtained in field cultivation, in
which were carried out the applications of homeopathy from the emergence to the harvest
of the plants. Distilled water and ethanol were used as negative control and glyphosate 2%
as a positive control. The determination of phenolic compounds present in the infusions
was carried by liquid chromatography in a UHPLC apparatus.
RESULTS: Chamomile infusions at concentrations of 10 and 40 g L-1 of inflorescence

reduced mitotic index and emphasized antiproliferative activity on the cell cycle of Allium
cepa. However, the treatments related to essential oil diluted to 0.10% showed a response
variation dependent on the dynamization used, as well as for apigenin concentration.
CONCLUSIONS:
Therefore, cultivation with homeopathy does not induce a genotoxic effect in the use of
infusions and essential oil of chamomile and it emphasize antiproliferative activity on the
cell cycle of Allium cepa, favoring the sustainable cultivation and the safe use of this
medicinal species when cultivated with homeopathy.
Effects of Homeopathic Preparations of Mercurius corrosivus on the Growth Rate

of Severely Mercury-Stressed Duckweed Lemna gibba L.

Abstract
BACKGROUND: We developed a bioassay with mercury-stressed duckweed (Lemna

gibba L.) to study potential effects of homeopathicallypotentised mercury(II) chloride
(Mercurius corrosivus [Merc-c.]). The response of this bioassay
to homeopathic treatments as a function of stress intensity was also of interest.
METHODS: Duckweed was severely stressed with mercury(II) chloride for 48 hours.
Afterwards plants grew in either Merc-c. (seven different potency levels, 24x to 30x) or
water controls (unsuccussed and succussed water) for 7 days. Growth rates of the
frond (leaf) area were determined using a computerised image analysis system for
different time intervals between the measurements on days 0, 3 and 7. Three
independent experiments with potentised Merc-c. each were evaluated. Additionally,
three water control experiments were analysed to investigate the stability of the
experimental set-up (systematic negative control [SNC] experiments). All experiments
were randomised and blinded.
RESULTS: Unsuccussed and succussed water did not significantly differ in terms of
duckweed growth rate. The SNC experiments did not yield any significant effects,
providing evidence for the stability of the experimental system. Data from the two
control groups and the seven treatment groups (Merc-c. 24x-30x) were each pooled to
increase the statistical power. Duckweed growth rates for day 0 to 3 were reduced
(p < 0.05) after application of Merc-c. compared with the controls. Growth rates for day
3 to 7 were not influenced by the homeopathicpreparations.
CONCLUSIONS: The present test system with Lemna gibba L. that was severely
stressed by mercury yielded evidence for specific effects of Merc-c. 24x to 30x, namely
a growth reduction in the first time period (day 0-3). This is in contrast to former
experiments with slightly arsenic-stressed duckweed, where a growth increase was
observed in the second time period (day 2-6). We hypothesise that the differing results
are associated with the level of stress intensity (severe versus slight).

Evaluation of Parasitological Homeopathic Complex in the Control of Gastrointestinal
Nematodes in Peripartum Sheep.

BACKGROUND: The appearance of anthelmintic resistance has made it difficult to control

verminosis in sheep, leading to increased research to find alternative nematode control. The
use of homeopathy in veterinary medicine has been studied as an alternative for the
treatment and control of some diseases. In this study, ewes received an anti-parasitic
homeopathic complex medicine during the critical peripartum period of increased
susceptibility to nematodes.
METHODS: Three randomized groups containing 16 animals each were assigned as

follows: 'H10' received 10 g homeopathic complex added to concentrated food per day; 'H20'
received 20 g homeopathic complex added to concentrated food per day; 'C' (control group)
did not receive a homeopathic complex. Animals were tested to evaluate the effect of
homeopathy on several health parameters during a period of 110 days.
RESULTS: The parasite that prevailed in the copro-cultures of both treatments throughout
the experiment was Haemonchus contortus (78.26%). Packed cell volume averages did not
present statistically significant differences between the treatments (24.5, 24.4 and 23.9% to C,
H10 and H20, respectively; p < 0.05). For total white cell count, lower mean values
( ± standard error of mean) were observed for the H20 treatment (5,490.9 ± 0.02/µL;
p < 0.05), whereas the H10 (5,919.4 ± 0.02/µL) and control (6,098.5 ± 0.02/µL) presented
higher and similar averages (p > 0.05). The values for erythrocytes, monocytes, and
lymphocytes did not show differences between treatments (p > 0.05). Body weight was
greater in the H10-treated animals compared with control. For the fecal egg count (FEC) of
Trichostrongylidae and Strongyloides spp., respectively, the averages of the H20 treatment
(1,523.0 and 30.6) were not different from control (1,616.0 and 31.6) and H10 (1,038.0 and
27.6); for Trichostrongylidae, however, H10 presented a lower FEC than the control (p = 0.02).
For Cooperia, H10- and H20-treated animals showed FEC reductions of 97% and 98%,
respectively.
CONCLUSIONS: H20 treatment in peripartum sheep resulted in greater body weight and
lower leukocyte count. H10 was associated with lower FEC for Trichostrongylidae. Both H10
and H20 justify a label of 'effective anthelmintic' for Cooperia.
Effect of Homeopathic Medicines on Intestinal Coccidia and Immune Response Cells in

Spotted Rose Snapper (Lutjanus guttatus).
Abstract
BACKGROUND: Homeopathy has been widely applied in freshwater species but rarely in
marine fish. Farm stress destabilises host-pathogen equilibrium, favouring parasites and
disease. Coccidian endoparasites cause intestinal infections and cell degeneration.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Naturally parasite-infested juvenile snapper Lutjanus

guttatus (n = 430; weight 1.9 ± 0.01 g; length 4.9 ± 0.03 cm) specimens were distributed in
group sizes of 43, in 10 fiberglass tanks (100 L) with aeration and continuous water change.
Five groups in duplicate were assessed: Passival (PaV); Passival and Phosphoricum
acid Similia (PaV-PhA); Passival and Silicea terra Similia (PaV-SiT); Endecto and Infecçoes
(End-Inf) and a control (Ethanol) for 45 days. Feed was sprinkled with treatment (5% v/w)
and dried to avoid ethanol side-effects. Statistical results were expressed as mean ± standard
error of the mean.
RESULTS: Intestinal coccidia were recorded histopathologically, with the least incidence
attained at T45 with End-Inf treatment (p < 0.001), coinciding with the highest lymphocyte
(p = 0.015) count. Fish treated with PaV-PhA recorded a higher percentage of neutrophils
(p = 0.015), and those treated with PaV-PhA, PaV-SiT and End-Inf revealed a decrease in
lesions, degree of alteration and change in intestine and stomach tissues (p < 0.05). The
number of mucous cells in gills was greater (p < 0.001) for End-Inf (43 ± 0.58), PaV-SiT
(40 ± 2.89) and PaV-PhA (39 ± 3.46) as compared respectively with T0 and control
(19 ± 0.58 and 28 ± 2.31). PaV and PaV-SiT increased carbohydrate reserves in liver
(28.4 ± 1.39% and 22.4 ± 0.12%, respectively) compared with T0 and control (3.4 ± 0.32 and
5.6 ± 0.66%). The highest survival rate was 97.7 ± 0.16% in fish treated with PaV and End-
Inf.
CONCLUSION: Homeopathic treatments had a positive effect on fish health. Besides the
accumulation of metabolic reserves in the liver, homeopathic treatment was associated with
mucin increase in gills as well as raised production of lymphocytes and neutrophils in blood,
which could act as macrophages against intestinal coccidia.
Reduction of stool bacterial counts and prevention of diarrhea using an oral

homeopathic product in newborn lambs.

Abstract
Lamb farming is generally a secondary activity for farmers, and many breeding systems
suffer from management failures that impair production. One reason for decline in
performance is enteritis, usually affecting newborn lambs. Enteritis can be fatal,
especially in dairy herds. Generally, lambs are fed sucrose or unprocessed milk from
sheep or cow that is heated and fed to animals two or three times a day in baby bottles.
However, on most farms, milk temperature differs among feeds, as often the process of
alteration among diet adaptations is deficient, contributing to enteritis and consequent
diarrhea. Therefore, the objective of the present study was to verify the administration of
the homeopathic product (Dia 100®) in newborn and bottle-fed lambs, in order to prevent
or minimize the occurrence of diarrhea. We studied 60 lambs, divided into two groups
with ten repetitions each (n = 30) and during the nursing period (1-45 days of life).
Animals in the treated group received the homeopathic product (36 g) orally divided into
three doses (1, 7 and 14 days of life). We measured weight gain, mortality, bacterial
counts (Escherichia coli and total coliforms) in feces, hematological analysis (leukocytes,
hematocrit, hemoglobin and erythrocytes) and biochemical analyses (glucose,
triglycerides, cholesterol, albumin, globulin, urea and total protein) at four time-points.
There were no differences in weight gain between groups (P > 0.05); however, there was a
higher mortality rate in the control group (13%) than in the treated group (6%). E. coli
counts were significantly higher in the stools of control group lambs on days 15 and 45 of
the experiment (P < 0.05). Total leukocyte counts were greater in treated animals due to
greater numbers of lymphocytes on day 15 of the experiment (P < 0.05). In the treated
group, we found higher serum levels of total protein, urea (day 15), globulin and
triglycerides (days 15 and 30). In the period of administration of the homeopathic
product, there was substantial and significant reduction of cases of diarrhea (up to day
14); however, after this period, there were no difference between groups. Based on these
results, we concluded that the homeopathic product had moderate efficacy in terms of
control of diarrhea. The treated lambs made better use of nutrients, contributing to the
development of their immune responses.

Homeopathy in Public Health in India.

Abstract
BACKGROUND: Based on a pluralistic approach to health care, India offers a range

of medical treatment modalities to its population. In that context, the government of
India aims at providing its people with wider access to homeopathy. This article
provides insight into the infrastructural support put in place by the government to meet
that aim.
DATA AND METHODS: A literature review was carried out of recent surveys and
articles to assess the morbidity trends in India and the treatment modalities being
sought by patients. Extensive attempts were made to identify and access all data
sources that could contribute to understanding the situation of homeopathy in public
health in India. These efforts included analysis of secondary data about government
wellness centres, as also a case study of one such centre.
RESULTS: In India, homeopathy is well represented in public health, being a close

second among the AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha
and Homeopathy) services. Homeopathy wellness centres comprise 31% of the total
for AYUSH. Seven out of 10 diseases recognised as a national health burden are in the
category of most commonly reported diseases at the homeopathy wellness centres.
Academic homeopathy institutes comprise 35.8% of AYUSH colleges, the total student
intakes of which are 13,658 and 32,256 respectively. Homeopathy practitioners are
37% of the AYUSH total. Homeopathy units comprise 1/19th of the number of
allopathy units, yet the annual patient footfall in the former is 1/5th of the latter.
CONCLUSION: Homeopathy services, wherever available, are being used fully and
thus sharing the patient load in the government-run wellness centres. There is the
potential for more homeopathic practitioners to contribute importantly to health care
delivery in India.
An Assessment of a Public Health Initiative of Homeopathy for Primary Teething.

Abstract
BACKGROUND: During primary teething, children suffer from running nose, mild
fever, diarrhoea and other mild irritations and inflammations. A public health
programme, 'Homoeopathy for the Healthy Child', was undertaken on a pilot basis
focusing on promotion of healthy teething by provision of home-based care through six
pre-identified homeopathic medicines for complaints commonly observed during primary
teething. This article assesses the feasibility of this programme and reports the impact of
this initiative on teething profile in children and episodes of diarrhoea and upper
respiratory tract infection (URTI).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) were

trained in child care and usage of a kit comprising six medicines, namely Calcarea
phosphoricum 6X (CP), Ferrum phosphoricum 3X, Magnesium phosphoricum 6X, Belladonna
30C, Chamomilla 30C and Podophyllum 30C. Calcarea phosphoricum was given regularly to
each participating child from 6 months to 1 year of age. Home-based care for diarrhoea,
URTI and mild fever was provided by ASHAs using the other five medicines in the kit.
Dentition pattern and diarrhoea/URTI episodes were recorded over a period of the next
12 months.
RESULTS: Eleven thousand four-hundred and twenty-six children were followed up

regularly. Amongst those who enrolled at 6-7 months, a larger proportion of children
were approaching expected teething in successive months as compared with children
enrolled at 12 months, thus indicating that teething delays, if any, were overcome during
this period. Incidence of diarrhoea and URTI showed decrease in the months after
enrolment. Children responded favourably to the medicines given by ASHAs at the time
of diarrhoea/URTI episodes, and ASHAs expressed satisfaction with the programme.
CONCLUSION: An approach with regular use of CP and home-based care with

homeopathy through health workers for common problems in teething children is
acceptable to the community and enhances outreach of services to the public at large.
Observations in terms of the healthy teething period may be further validated through
studies of homeopathy with suitable comparator group.
A Study of Siberia's Medicinal Plants Used in Homeopathy..

Abstract
BACKGROUND: A current priority of national health care in Russia is to expand the

range of drug substances, based on naturally occurring compounds, to use for treating
socially significant diseases, such as cancer and cardiovascular diseases.
OBJECTIVE: The main objective of our study was to compile a contemporary list of
Siberia's 'homeopathic plants', describing for each plant the corresponding therapeutic
indications or main symptoms of disease.
METHODS: The textbook, Global Resources of Homeopathic Medicinal Raw Materials, was
used to scrutinize the 709 species that are allowed for use in Russia, designating each of
the 709 as either indigenous or non-indigenous to the region of Siberia. A homeopathic
repertory, containing description of more than 1,800 single-component homeopathic
medicines, was used to identify Siberia's medicinal plants used in homeopathy, along
with the medical indications of each.
RESULTS: The medicinal plants of Siberia used in homeopathy comprise 137 species of
flowering plants, gymnosperms and sporophytes, belonging to 52 families. The most
represented are the Compositae, Rosaceae, and Lamiaceae families.
CONCLUSION: The inventory of Siberian plants has allowed us to identify the plants
of this region used in homeopathy and will help to inform research on additional species
with the potential for introduction into homeopathic practice.

Retrospective estimation of prevalence and likelihood ratio of general symptoms of 29
less frequently prescribed homoeopathic medicines by clinical verification

Abstract
Context: Scientific assessment of proving symptoms or already recorded symptoms in

patients refers to Clinical Verification (CV). There are serious shortcomings of existing
methods of CV, mostly arising from qualitative observations made on absolute
occurrence of symptoms instead of relative ones. This problem can be resolved by the use
of the Likelihood Ratio (LR). Aim: This study aims to estimate the prevalence and LRs
of general symptoms of 29 less frequently prescribed homoeopathic medicines. Methods:
The study was multicentric, open and observational. Patients were enrolled as per pre-
specified eligibility criteria. Alongside, presenting complaints and general symptoms were
taken into account during prescription. Medicines were prescribed in centesimal
potencies. LR calculation of general symptoms was based on clinician-rated outcomes as
'improved' and 'not improved' of presenting complaints and was divided into three
sections: (1) when the prevalence of a symptom was available from literature, LR was
calculated by assessing the prevalence of that symptom in the responder sample, (2) in
the absence of so, calculation was restricted to mean prevalence data from study sample
('confined LR') and (3) 'confined LRs' were not calculated for symptoms whose
prevalence were not recorded for at least five medicines and were kept for estimation in
future. Results: Of 166 general symptoms of 29 medicines, LRs and confined LRs >1.5
were elicited for 6 and 49 symptoms, respectively. Conclusion: In spite of considerable
caveats, it is the first insight into prevalence and LRs of general symptoms of less
frequently prescribed homoeopathic medicines. Further research is warranted.

Pharmacognostic and physicochemical study of Urtica urens L.: A drug used in

Homoeopathy

Abstract
Background: Urtica urens L. (Family Urticaceae), known as annual nettle, dwarf nettle,
small nettle, dog nettle or burning nettle, is used in the treatment of arthritis, uric acid
diseases, benign prostatic hyperplasia and burn. In Homoeopathy, the whole plant is used
for the treatment of gout, uric acid diathesis, joint pain, lithiasis, urticaria and agalactia
and burns.
Objective: The objectives of the present study were to investigate morpho-anatomical,

powder and physicochemical standards of the whole plant of Urtica urens for
authentication and identification of raw drug. Materials and Methods: The current study
includes macroscopical and microscopical study of root, stem, leaf and powder and
physicochemical studies of whole plant powder and mother tincture of Urtica urens.
Results: The taproot is rounded, thick and brown; leaves are long petiolate, elliptic to
broadly ovate; stem 0.5–1 cm thick, rounded and branched. Qualitative and quantitative
microscopic studies showed the distinguishing characters of root stem and leaf. In
physicochemical studies of the drug, extractive values in alcohol and water were ≤7.52
and ≤13.88% w/w, respectively; loss on drying, total, acid insoluble and water-soluble
ash were found to be ≤11.75, ≤24.55, ≤3.59 and ≤6.89% w/w, respectively. In mother
tincture, weight per millilitre, alcohol content, total solids, pH and λmax were found to be
≥0.97 g, 47% v/v–52% v/v, ≤1.88% w/v, 7.93 and 266, 279 nm, respectively.
Conclusion: The data presented in this communication may be used as diagnostic

characters for identification and authentication of raw drug so as to ensure purity, quality
and efficacy of homoeopathic drug Urtica urens.

Evaluation of antibacterial and antioxidant potential of some homoeopathic mother

tinctures

Abstract
Objectives: In homoeopathic system of medicine, mother tinctures are prescribed for

several diseases especially for septic conditions and cure of many illnesses. This study
was done to evaluate the antibacterial and antioxidant potential of ten commonly used
homoeopathic mother tinctures.
Materials and Methods: Ten prepared mother tinctures were tested against five clinically
important human pathogenic bacteria (Salmonella typhi [S.T], Escherichia coli [E.C],
Bacillus subtilis [B.S], Staphylococcus aureus [S.A], and Pseudomonas aeruginosa [P.A])
by broth micro-dilution method with ciprofloxacin as positive control. Antioxidant
activity was estimated by 2,2-diphenyl 1-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) inhibition assay.
Ascorbic acid was taken as positive standard in antioxidant activity.
Results: All mother tinctures showed more or less antibacterial activity. Cinchona
officinalis had maximum activity (89% inhibition) against Salmonella typhi than all the
tested mother tinctures. Pulsatilla nigricans showed the highest inhibition of DPPH
(85%) among other tested plant mother tinctures.
Conclusion: This study reveals that the above-tested mother tincture has antibacterial
and antioxidant potential against the particular microorganism and 2,2- diphenyl 1-
picrylhydrazyl (DPHH), respectively.
