Re: What is the need for checking knee point voltage for CT's?

Answer
#1
CT is designed for operation in linear region. In this
region only, current changes acoording to turn ratio.Knee
point on magnetisation curve of core is the point at which
core begins to saturates.Once the core gets saturated, it
losses the transformation propery. It will carry same
secondary current for all primary current. This maloperation
is of no use as far as CT action is concerned.

Knee point sets the upper limits of B so as not to exceed

this limit during operation. Thus it ensures the intended
operation of CT.

Re: what is the range of using dol starter & star delta starter. Answer
#2
There is no hard N fast rule which state the range of star
delta and DOL starter, we have to keep in mind fallowing
points during configuration of DOL starter.
1) Motor should not be of very high rating.
2) Starting torque (reqd to start motor)is not very high.

apart from above case we should use star delta starter.

Re: what is power factor ? Answer
#2
The power factor of an AC electric power system is defined
as the ratio of the real power flowing to the load to the
apparent power [1] [2], and is a number between 0 and 1
(frequently expressed as a percentage, e.g. 0.5 pf = 50%
pf). Real power is the capacity of the circuit for
performing work in a particular time. Apparent power is the
product of the current and voltage of the circuit. Due to
energy stored in the load and returned to the source, or due
to a non-linear load that distorts the wave shape of the
current drawn from the source, the apparent power can be
greater than the real power.
In an electric power system, a load with low power factor
draws more current than a load with a high power factor, for
the same amount of useful power transferred. The higher
currents increase the energy lost in the distribution
system, and require larger wires and other equipment.
Because of the costs of larger equipment and wasted energy,
electrical utilities will usually charge a higher cost to
industrial or commercial customers where there is a low
power factor.
Linear loads with low power factor (such as induction
motors) can be corrected with a passive network of
capacitors or inductors. Non-linear loads, such as
rectifiers, distort the current drawn from the system. In
such cases, active power factor correction is used to
counteract the distortion and raise power factor. The
devices for correction of power factor may be at a central
substation, or spread out over a distribution system, or
built into power-consuming equipment.

Re: what is power factor ? Answer

#3
Power factor is the ratio of real power flowing to the load
to apparant power. It is relevant because the power which we
are giving(Apparant power) is not utilized fully because of
the inducatance and capacitance of the system.Apparant
power is expressed in VA because on applying a potentail
difference between two end of a conductor current is
flowing through the circuit. This is the power given. Real
power is the power utilised by the inductive load

Re: what is power factor ? Answer
#6
By defenition , power factor is the cosine of the phase
angle between voltage and current in any electric circuit

Suppose we have an electric circuit to which an AC supply

is applied . Now the flow of current depends on the circuit
constants like Resistance, inductance ,Capacitance of the
circuit

Now if the circuit is purely resistive in nature, then we

see that the AC current flowing through the circuit has got
the same variation as that of the Voltage at the same time
ie the current reaches the maximum value at the same time
the voltage reaches the maximum value and so on . here we
say that the voltage and current is in phase

Now if the circuit is purely inductive, then the current

reaches the maximum after 1/4 of time of one cycle and so
on . In this case the current is said to be lagging the
voltage . The fundamental reason for this time lag is the
property of the inductor by which it doesnot allow any
sudden change of current through it

Finally, if the circuit is purely capacitive in nature then

in such circuit we will see the voltage lagging the current
(in otherwords current is leading the voltage )by 1/4 th
cycle . The basic reason is that when the capacitor is
getting charged from zero ,the current will be maximum
initially and it reduces to zero when the capacitor is
fully charged .ie the current is maximum when the voltage
across it is zero and so on ( or otherwise capacitor will
not allow any sudden voltage acoss it

The foregoing expalnations are put in mathematical form to

define power factor as described in the first paragraph

CFL bulbs have an electronic circuit in the base of the
bulb. This electronic circuit is called an electronic

gas in the tube, initially.

PL tubes are simply connected to the pins at the base.

External ballasts must be used to supply the high voltage

Re: WHY IS THE NO LOAD CURRENT SMALL FOR A TRANSFORMER

COMPARED TO OTHER ROTATING ELECTRICAL MACHINES?? Answer
#1
In any rotating electrical machine, for it to rotate, there has to be a
slip (between the stator and the rotor) to create torque for rotation,
hence even if there is no load, the no load current will be higher (to
create this torque) than the transformer which will have only eddy
currents and magnetic field losses.

Re: what is the advantage of DC Motor over AC motor & Where its applicable ?
Answer
#3
it is completely depends on the application i.e where we are
using the motor.if we require high starting torque dc series
motor is applicable or we require better speed vs current
chars. dc shunt motor is suitable, like wise depending upon
the application it will change. and the main advantage of dc
motor over ac is speed controlling ig very very easy
compared to ac motors.

Re: what is the advantage of DC Motor over AC motor & Where its applicable ?
Answer
#4
The brushed DC motor generates torque directly from DC power supplied
to the motor by using internal commutation, stationary permanent
magnets, and rotating electrical magnets. Advantages of a brushed DC
motor include low initial cost, high reliability, and simple control of
motor speed. Disadvantages are high maintenance and low life-span for
high intensity uses. Maintenance involves regularly replacing the
brushes and springs which carry the electric current, as well as
cleaning or replacing the commutator. These components are necessary
for transferring electrical power from outside the motor to the
spinning wire windings of the rotor inside the motor.

Re: Why thwe Direction of Rotation of a TABLE Fan & CEILING Fan are
different? Answer
#4
In general engineering most of the threads are right handed.
So it is more economical to thread righthanded thread
instead of left handed thread which is slightly costlier.
Coming to the direction of rotation of the ceiling fan, the
stator is fixed on to the hung member from the ceiling, is
generally threaded on to the stator.
During the function of the fan rotation, it is preferable
to have the reactional force experienced by the stator to
be clock wise so that the threaded joint is not loosened
and lead to any untoward accidents.

On the other hand a table fan's stator is not threaded

along the axis of the rotor and hence the direction of
rotation is not a problem.
As people are more used to clock wise rotation, the table
fan is also designed to rotate clock wise.

As name suggest Isolation transformer does not alter
power, voltage or current level. It only electrically isolate
two parts of circuits. It has turn ratio of 1:1
It is use in amplifier circuit.

What is the use of it? Answer
#2
Isolation transformer means that the device has a galvanic
separation between the primary and secondary. Galvanic
isolation means there is “insulation” that does not allow
current flow or no electrons to transfer between two sides
of the circuit. Isolation transformers can be kV or micro
Volt size. They may be 1:1 or 1000:1 or 1:10,000. The
term isolation transformer does not indicate anything about
the transformer except that the secondary is not electrical
connected to the primary. Meaning the primary and
secondary grounds are completely independent of each
other. The connection between the two sides the magnetic
flux not an electrical connection.

Re: In synchronous generators field is rotor and armature is stator. Can we take
the output at the rotor in case of synchronous generator by the dc excitation on the
stator? Answer
#1
yes, we can. There two types of synchronous generator
1,rotor as a field 2,stator as a field.
so,what u have asked is come under the 2'nd category.
but, generally second one is not adopted in practical due
to various technical issues.

Re: In synchronous generators field is rotor and armature is stator. Can we take
the output at the rotor in case of synchronous generator by the dc excitation on the
stator? Answer
#2
Yes,electricity can be generater in either case.
However, due to high voltage 6.6 KV/11 KV it is much more
safe to kept HV on stator. Further, if we take HV on the
rotor, rotor will have more mass as the total curent will
be carried out by HV windings only. It will also give more
thrust on the bearings.

Therefore, it is safe and reliable to have field windings

on the rotor part of the generator. Brushless exciter is
the best choice for any syn

CTs are used for in the measurement of current as a primary
sensor. The output of the CT is connected to the relevant
power meter. For CT the primary is the busbar / cable
caarying current which generates current in the secondary
by induction. Now if CT secondary is kept open and current
flows through primary the induced emf in the secondary will
not have a close path to flow which will lead to opening /
bursting of the CT.

Re: Why CT secondary should not be kept open? Answer
#2
CTs are used for the measurement of high currents as a
primary sensor. The output of the CT is normally connected
to the relevant ammeter which has very low impendence and
secondary remains almost short circuited. The secondary
current has no control over primary current in a CT. If
secondary is open circuited two things will happen :
1. Due to absence of secondary current no counter magnetic
field is produced and flux in core of CT rises to
saturation level which can change the charateristics of CT
and damage it permanently
2. since number of turns in secondary is very high (1:
1000) for , a very high voltage may be induced in secondary
that can harm the prsons working on the instruments panel.

Re: Why CT secondary should not be kept open? Answer

#3
In the physical construction of CTs you can see the secondary
is made up of a winding but the secondary is just one cable or
busbar. So it acts as a step up transtrofmer when the secondary
is left open.It is real I have seen two people who have had their hands
burnt due to careless handling of the CTs.

[A R T.] Re: Why CT secondary should not be kept open? Answer
#4
The CT secondary should not be left opened secondary due to
following reasons:

1)Zero current in secondary leads zero back emf.So primary

current becomes very high as the primary resistance is very
low.Large heat generated may burn the winding and core.If
the transformer sustain this heat, even then its operation
becomes improper as explained below.

2)CT is bascially a step up transformer. So high voltage

induced in secondary may saturate the core (core becomes
permanently damaged). So the operating point advances in non
linear region, which makes the transformer operation improper
(secomdary current will not replicate the primary according
to the turn ratio).

3)High voltage spikes(order of kV) produced in secondary side

may endanger the life of personnel working on the secondary
side.

4)High voltage spikes(order of kV) produced in secondary side

is sufficient to break down the transformer insulation.
