Comilla, India, Oct 19, 1946 (UP)

Moslem mobs set fire to at least 11 more Hindu villages

today in the area of Comilla on the Bengal-Assam Railway,
150 miles east of Calcutta.

Billowing clouds of smoke and flames licked up towards our

plane from the burning villages as we passed over them at
about 500 feet shortly after landing at Comilla airport.

In this East Bengal communications center, which one was

a formidable base opposing the Japanese in Burma, there
are now at least 5000 terrified Hindu refugees.

Many of then are members of wealthy, land-owning families.

Now they cower half-clad and stripped of all possessions in
the corners of crowded buildings.

This panic-stricken group, including hundreds of once

wealthy women, fled here for shelter from southern
Tipperah and Noakhali districts where Moslem mobs are
running riot.

[Note: This area of India is in Chittagong, which borders

Arakan / Rakhine State. Chittagong is now part of
Bangladesh. It is walking distance to Arakan, where the
same atrocities and mayhem were happening against
the indigenous Buddhists, ethnic tribal minorities and
Hindus.]
