200 KILLED IN INDIA RIOTS

Moslem Mobs Burn, Loot Hindu Shops

Thousands in Bloody Battles, Entire Streets
Smashed, Police Fail to Control Outbreak
LONDON, Saturday, August 17, 1946 (UP)

The New Delhi radio, heard by Exchange Telegraph, reported

today that the unofficial death toll in Calcutta rioting had reached
200 by 10 a.m.

The rioting broke out anew today after Friday’s “direct action day”
disturbances in which five were reported killed in Calcutta and
more than 100 injured as Muslim mobs burned and looted scores
of Hindu shops and attempted to set fire to the British foreign
ministry office building.

Bloody Battles
The rioting started with numerous isolated incidents Friday and
flared into bloody battles in which thousands of Moslems,
protesting the proposal for a provisional government in which the
Moslem League and other Mohammedan groups refused to
participate, smashed entire streets.

Police failed to halt the rioting, which grew in ferocity throughout

the day.

Today’s outbreaks were apparently a continuation.

The Moslem mobs stripped Hindu shops of their goods and

paraded with the items of loot.

More Than 100 Hurt

Calcutta hospitals had admitted more than 100 injured persons by
sundown Friday.

Reports from Bombay said ”direct action day” demonstrations

there had been limited to a few processions and a general strike in
Moslem sections after a severe monsoon rain drenched the city.
There was no violence during daylight hours Friday, but observers
reported the situation there as “tense.”

ethnic minorities, Hindus in neighboring Arakan, Burma]
