Eight Elements of Good Governance

Good governance is responsive to the present and future needs of the organization, exercises prudence in policy-setting
and decision-making, and that the best interests of all stakeholders are taken into account.

1. Rule of Law - requires fair legal frameworks that are enforced by an impartial regulatory body, for the full protection
of stakeholders.

2. Transparency - means that decisions taken and their enforcement are done in a manner that follows rules and
regulations.

3. Responsiveness - requires that institutions and processes try to serve all stakeholders within a reasonable timeframe.

4. Consensus Oriented - requires mediation of the different interests in society to reach a broad consensus in society on
what is in the best interest of the whole community and how this can be achieved.

5. Equity and Inclusiveness - provides the opportunity for its stakeholders to maintain, enhance, or generally improve
their well-being

6. Effectiveness and Efficiency - processes and institutions produce results that meet the needs of society while making
the best use of resources at their disposal.

7. Accountability - an organization or an institution is accountable to those who will be affected by its decisions or
actions.

8. Participation - by both men and women, either directly or through legitimate representatives, is a key cornerstone of
good governance.
