Education
2003 – 2008, PhD in Meteorology, Hanoi College of Science, Vietnam National
University, Hanoi. (Title: “Development and application of a three dimensional
tropical cyclone initialization scheme for typhoon track prediction in Vietnam”)
Brief Synopsis:
A tropical cyclone initialization scheme was developed as an optional module in
the High resolution Regional Model (HRM), an operational model at Vietnam
National Center for Hydrology and Meteorology Forecast (NCHMF). The scheme
included two phases. The first was a vortex analysis that is similar to the analysis
scheme in Tropical Cyclone Limited Area Prediction System (TC–LAPS) model
to remove a weak and erroneous vortex from the first guessed fields. The second
was an artificial tropical cyclone construction which was built based a thermal
wind relation in tropical cyclones. The results showed a significant improvement
in track forecast as compared to cases without using the scheme.

1998–2002, BSc. in Meteorology, Vietnam National University, Hanoi

My undergraduate study was in the honor program, a special program for gifted
students of Hanoi College of Science. My main research was on an application of
the WBAR model for tropical cyclone forecast in Vietnam. With an impressive
undergraduate record, I was then offered a PhD fellowship at the Vietnam
National University, Hanoi.

Employment
2008–now: Lecturer, Faculty of Hydrology, Meteorology and Oceanography,
Hanoi College of Science, Vietnam National University, Hanoi
2002–2008: Research Assistant, Faculty of Hydrology, Meteorology and Oceanography,
Hanoi College of Science, Vietnam National University, Hanoi
Teaching
Synoptic Meteorology, Fundamental Meteorology, Tropical Cyclone Dynamics

Skills
– Strong experience with numerical simulations
– Familiar with GRIB and NETCDF data format
– Experiences with HRM, MM5 and WRF (ARW–core) model.
– Familiar with Linux and scripting in Linux (Bash shell, python, grads script)
– Familiar with some programming languages such as Fortran, C++, Pascal,
PHP/MySQL
– Familiar with post processing programs such as Grads

Professional Experience
I’ve been in Germany for two periods. The first was from September to December in
2005 hosted by Meteorological Institute, University of Munich. The purpose of the first
visit was to develop an initialization algorithm for Tropical Cyclone (TC) research and to
incorporate into the WRF model. This research was later used in my doctoral thesis,
which was defended in 2008. The second period was from July to September in 2009 as
an exchanged scientist funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). During the
visit, I designed and developed a simple model to solve for the secondary circulation
using the Sawyer–Eliassen equation. The outcome of this second visit was a publication
in an international journal (Bui et al. 2009).
