4 General Requirements

4.1 Non-metallic piping shall be buried for all fluid service.

4.2 Non-metallic piping shall not be subjected to excessive temperature, shock,

vibration and pulsation in all fluid service.

4.3 Piping lined with non-metallic shall be according to ASME B31.3. The liner
shall be for corrosion resistance and shall not be to withstand pressure.

4.4 Fire water systems design shall be according to SAES-B-017.

4.5 Oily water drainage system shall be according to SAES-S-020.

4.6 Non-metallic shall not be used for hydrocarbon, air or gas services.

Non-metallic may be used for aviation refueling distribution systems.

4.7 The use of non-metallic piping in hydrocarbon and oily water system is not
allowed in offshore structures.

4.8 Non-metallic piping shall be compatible with the fluid services.

5 Material Requirement

5.1 RTR shall be in accordance with 01-SAMSS-034 and 01-SAMSS-029.

5.2 RTR piping for aviation refueling distribution systems shall not be greater than
4-inch nominal pipe size.

Additional protection shall be provided to ensure the integrity of the system

against physical damage. As a minimum, red concrete slabs shall be laid
midway between the pipe and grade, and markers indicating the location of the
buried pipe shall be installed at intervals not exceeding 30 m.

5.3 Thermoplastic and reinforced plastic mortar shall not be used in process water.

5.4 Non-metallic piping shall have built-in protection from Ultraviolet (UV) light if
it is exposed to sunlight.

6 Design Requirement

6.1 RTR shall not exceed the recommended temperature limits addressed in
Table A323.4.2c of ASME B31.3.

6.2 For RTR piping system, pre-qualified jointing procedures and methods in
accordance with 01-SAMSS-034 and 01-SAMSS-029, shall be used.

6.3 Flexibility requirements of nonmetallic piping system shall be as follows:

a) Flexibility, support and anchoring requirements shall be in accordance with
ASME B31.3 Chapter VII. ISO 14692-3 shall be used as a guideline.
b) Flexibility, if required, shall be provided by using bends, loops, offsets,
bellows, expansion joints and slip joints.
c) Cold spring is not permitted in nonmetallic piping systems
d) The piping system shall be designed to minimize excessive loads on the
piping joints.
e) The flexibility requirement for non-metallic piping system shall be
conducted separately when connected to metallic piping system with the
proper boundary conditions. Both systems shall be analyzed.

7 Limitations on Piping Joints

7.1 Threaded flanges shall not be used on nonmetallic piping systems.

7.2 Flanged joints shall have the following requirements:

Document Responsibility: Piping Standards Committee SAES-L-610
Issue Date: 22 July 2014
Next Planned Update: 22 July 2019 Nonmetallic Piping for In-Plant

a) Flanged joints on nonmetallic piping system shall be made with flat face
flanges and full-faced elastomeric gaskets.
b) Flanges shall have pressure rating equal to or greater than the nonmetallic
piping pressure rating.
c) Bolt tightening procedures and maximum torque for bolting on nonmetallic
flanges shall be in accordance with ASTM D4024.
d) Washers shall be used for bolting nonmetallic flanges.

7.3 Transition from nonmetallic to metallic piping shall be done in a manner that the
weight of metallic piping shall not be transferred to nonmetallic piping.

7.4 In pressurized systems, connections to metal valves, larger than 50 mm nominal

pipe sizes, shall be by means of flanges.

7.5 Nonmetallic piping joints shall be clear of concrete anchor blocks

8 Limitations on Valves

8.1 Non-buried metal valves including metal valves in covered valve boxes, shall be
supported independently of nonmetallic piping. In buried condition, metal valves
4 inch in size and larger shall be supported independently of nonmetallic piping.

8.2 Nonmetallic pipe shall be carried through a metallic sleeve in a valve box wall.
Nonmetallic sleeve is acceptable provided the sleeve shall have mechanical
characteristics and properties at least similar to that of the pipe passing through
the sleeve. The space between the pipe and sleeve shall be sealed with approved
flexible waterproof mastic sealant.

8.3 The distance between the valve box wall and the back of the nonmetallic flange,
inside the valve box, shall be not less than 150 mm to permit work access.

8.4 Valve box more than 1.2 meters in depth shall not be permitted in process plant.

9 Installation, Testing and Inspection

This Standard adopts the requirements of ASME B31.3. SAES-S-070, “Installation of

Utility Piping Systems” shall be used as an additional requirement to ASME B31.3.
