Lesson Idea Name: Planets!

Content Area: Science
Grade Level(s): 4th grade
Content Standard Addressed:

S4E2 Students will model the position and motion of the earth in the solar system and will explain the role of
relative position and motion in determining sequence of the phases of the moon.

d. Demonstrate the relative size and order from the sun of the planets in the solar system.

Technology Standard Addressed: 3 – Knowledge Constructor

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

 The activity is displayed on an interactive whiteboard which allows the font to be larger for students
who may be visually impaired.
 This activity directly aligns with the standard.
 Students with learning disabilities are able to do the activity as many times as they need. The
application I chose also allows for the instructor to lengthen the time that students have to answer
questions.
 The information is presented in creative way that keeps students engaged.
 Students are able to express what they have learned in a way that makes them comfortable, but also
provides the teacher with important data.

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.
Prior to the SRT activity, the students will engage in a lesson about the planets and where they fit in our solar
system. The students will create their own flipbook about each of the planets that they will be able to use
during the SRT activity. I will introduce the Kahoot as a way for the students to review what they have
learned, and I will explain to them that this review is a games. I will demonstrate how to answer the questions
on an example that I can access on the Kahoot website.

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
☒ Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☒ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☒ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☐ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☒ Test preparation
☒ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity:

The students will work on a computer or tablet (depending on what the school provides). The students will
answer the questions and if there is a question many students get wrong, we will go over the answer as a
class to help any misconceptions. The teacher will be reading the questions and answers out loud to help the
students who may not read as quickly. The teacher will also be gathering data about the students that they
can use to help students in the areas they need. This activity will last anywhere from 15-20 minutes,
depending on how much time the students need.

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):

☒ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☐ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):
N/A
Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?
☒ Yes ☐ No
☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☒ Yes
☐ No
Why or why not?
I will be using the SRT activity as a formative assessment of the students’ knowledge and as a way for the
students to review the unit about the Solar System. Since the students will be reviewing, I believe it is
important that students know immediately whether or not their answer was correct. This way they know
what to focus on for the upcoming test on the planets.

Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?

After the SRT activity, the teacher will go over the data that they have gathered from the activity and will
determine what area is needed to be retaught and which students may need some additional help. The
teacher will also ask the students what they think about Kahoot and if they would like the teacher to use it
again in the future.

How will the data be used?

The data gathered from this activity will be used to help the teacher determine what students need additional
instruction and what areas need reemphasizing. The teacher will also use the data to make any needed
adjustments to the lesson and reteach it. This activity is used as a way to review what the students have
learned about the planets before taking a test at the end of the unit. This activity is also used as a formative
assessment to gauge the students understanding of the planets.

Student Response and Assessment Tools
Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.
I hope that by using Kahoot as a formative assessment, that the students will remain engaged and not feel the
pressure that normally comes with assessments. I also hope that by gaining data using this application, that I
will be better equipped to help my students in the areas they need help with specifically. I also included
pictures in my assessment, in hopes that they may trigger the students’ prior knowledge that they gained
from the lesson.

Reflective Practice:
I feel this activity will give me a way to assess what the students have learned in a way that makes it more fun
for the students. To further extend this lesson, I could have the students come up with questions for the final
test using the application and pick from the questions to create the test. This would give the students a voice
in what will be on the test. I could also place the students in groups or pairs and have them create a Nearpod
about the planets and have them publish their finished products on the class website.
