JOSEPH EJERCITO ESTRADA

I am José Marcelo Ejército, Sr. I was born on April 19, 1937 at Manugit
Maternity Hospital in Tondo. I am popular by name of Joseph Ejercito
Estrada given to me by my close friend Fernando Poe, Jr. I belonged to a
wealthy family, and was the eighth of ten children of Emilio Ejercito Sr. and his
wife, Maria Marcelo.

I enrolled at Ateneo Elementary School and after graduating from the


Ateneo elementary school in 1951, I enrolled at Ateneo High School but I was
later expelled in my second year for disciplinary conduct. Later during college I
enrolled in a civil engineering course at the Mapúa Institute of Technology and
later transferred to Central Colleges of the Philippines but later dropped out.

I was married to former Dr. Luisa "Loi" Pimentel, and I have three
children with her.

I worked with the entertainment industry as an actor and was able to


play lead roles in more than 100 movies.

In the year 1967, I entered into politics and run as mayor of San Juan,
Metro Manila. I became mayor in 1969. I am proud with my accomplishments
as mayor. I have done many infrastructure projects which include the
establishment of the first Municipal High School, the Agora complex, a modern
slaughterhouse, a sprawling government center with a post office, a mini-park
and the paving of 98 percent of the town's roads and alleys. As mayor, I gave
my attention to youth education.

I became a senator of the Republic of the Philippines in the June 30,


1987 – June 30, 1992. In 1989, as a senator, I was awarded as one of the
Three Outstanding Senators of the Year.

In 1992, I became the Vice-President of the Republic and was the


chairman of President Ramos' Presidential Anti-Crime Commission (PACC).
Estrada arrested criminal warlords and kidnapping syndicates.

In 1998, I succeeded Fidel Valdez Ramos as president and became the


13th President of the Republic of the Philippines from 1998 to 2001.

During my presidency, I established farm reforms and gave land to


farmers without land, loan to farmers for them to have money to start small
business, rolling stores to selling cheap rice to the people, Erap para sa
mahirap.

Camp Abubakar, headquarters of the MILF, fell along with other 13


major camps and 43 minor camps, and then all of which became under
controlled by the government.

During my first State of the Nation Address, it is my message to restore


and maintain peace in Mindanao, to develop Mindanao and continue with the
peace talks with the MILF.
On January 20, 2001, I stepped down as president because of
impeachment.

On September 12, 2007, I got convicted and went to prison because of


plunder. I was the first Philippine President who was impeached and then
convicted.

In October 22, 2017, I was pardoned and released from detention.

In May 2012, I announced my intention to run for Mayor of Manila in the


2013 elections to continue my political career. On May 14, 2013, I was
proclaimed mayor-elect of the City of Manila.
