must be carefully conducted. SIope gradient shoul-C be examined
by taklng account of the bearing power and permeabillty of

Since dam materi-als vrith a smal]er shear strength are normally
used for this type of dams anrl the conditions of foundations are
poor in many ca$es, Lhe slope gradient. tends to become 6;entler
compared to ot,her types of dams.
(2) Removai of pore vrater pressure
1f an excess pore water pressure occurs duri-ng v,,ork, the
stabllity of the dams rnay be sometj-mes 1ost.
Occu:':'ence of the cxcess pore water pressui"e can be prevented
by the follcwing methods:
i) To perform ccrnpaction by royrering the water contenL 1n
percent. of dry wei-ght to almost the optimum vrater content.
2) To ad ju-s t emba.nhnenl speed.
The above is related to the method of execution of vrork, bul
the pore vaLer. pressure may be also removed through design.
l-or exanple, ii'ains nay be pr-ovided at a proper rrlace wlthin

3) Installati on of rirains
Drains are useful for removing pore wa+-er pressure during
work and also 1'or pieventlng the rnovenent of seepafle viater lnto

Table 2 is appended for refer:ence because materiai c1r€a. prospects.ofL.en
can be determined from topography.

For points thus selectecj, geological sr:rvey at abouL L/2,500 is

conducted, thereby confirmj-ng data and planning research. Then, boring
and seismic prospecting are conducted under the survey plan ancl, if
necessary, adit anct shaf t and material- testing arc also conduct-ed.
Boring and a simpLe test-pit material test are sometimes conducted
at topographically representative points before the planning of survey to
supplement results of geological survey. This is called primary survey-
