Wolmer’s Boys’ School

First Form English Language

Course Outline
Easter Term 2019
Unit Topic: Paragraph - Writing
Primary Texts: English for All, Book 1 and Grammar Plus

RATIONALE: This term’s English Language curriculum will enhance the students’
understanding and appreciation of constructing complete sentences and combining them to make
coherent paragraphs. They will begin to think more critically and carefully about the elements of
a paragraph; not being only a group of sentences. Instead, they will begin to ensure that the
common thread of ‘the same idea’, is interwoven amongst sentences to create a self-contained
unit; being a paragraph. An introduction to the concept of ‘transitional words’, will also assist
students in making harmonious connections amongst paragraphs. Descriptive Writing will also
be a main focus; specifically, describing a person. Consequently, by mastering these skills,
students will amplify their abilities to write three-paragraph essays in the initial stages of their
writing. These skills will establish the foundation for other genres of writing, as they progress
academically.
