World Record Attempt

Largest Truck Convoy

On Saturday, 2 April 2011, during National Youth Week, (and International Year of
Youth) the Youth Involvement Council (YIC) and the Hedland community will join the
trucking community to attempt our own World Record. The trucks will drive the
distance of 5km in convoy, from South Hedland to Port Hedland. Local truck drivers
(and possibly Australia wide) and youth from the region are invited to join our
attempt.
Our goal
The goal is to beat the previous record of 416 trucks (by female truck drivers who
drove 5km in convoy). The difference being we would like to include a youth
passenger in each truck cab. Let’s also take this opportunity to raise awareness of
young people in crisis and youth issues, and to healthily engage our youth and the
community during National Youth Week.
How it started
The idea of the World Record attempt originated from the YIC’s 2009 Christmas
Party at the Lawson Street Youth Centre, where local truck drivers gave over 100
young Indigenous youth truck rides around South Hedland. This led to a
conversation about a previous truck world record, and before we knew it a Working
Group, was organising this event. We have now received approval from the
Guinness Book of World Record office to go ahead!
How will this happen?
An anticipated 425 participating trucks will assemble in convoy (hopefully, with a
young person in each cab). They shall drive from the Finucane Island Sports & Rec
Club in South Hedland to the Port Hedland racecourse, (the last truck is to drive
5km) where the community will welcome the trucks in, and hopefully, help them
celebrate their win (See attached timetable).
Who will be involved
The Working Group consists of representatives from YIC, Finucane Island Sports &
Rec Club, Northaul, the Town of Port Hedland, WA Police, A1 Labour Management,
Sanmel Contracting, Mammoet, Global Capacity Solutions and Northwest Liquor
have been working hard on the organisation of this event, and now invite anyone
who has access to a truck to join in and register. Sponsorship and/or donations of
equipment and/or time are being sought from local and state organisations who
would like to be involved.
The Event
As per the timetable, the Hedland Community will need to be off certain parts of the
Port Hedland main road from 1.30pm to 4pm. Hence there will be ongoing events
for all the family, at the Port Hedland Turf Club whilst waiting for the trucks to arrive.
There will also be a celebratory event from 4pm until 9pm. There will be fun for
young people, families and all of those involved.
