INTRODUCTION TO STAAD PRO

AIM:

To study the various features of STAAD pro

REVIEW:

STAAD Pro is comprehensive structural engineering software that addresses all

aspects engineering including model development, verification, analysis, design and review
of results. Based on the data, the reports can be created. The main option available in
concurrent environmental are

STAAD Pro - Analysis and design

STAAD PRE - Graphical input generation

STAAD post - Graphical post processing

STAAD INTDES - Interactive design structural components

STAAD Pro:

STAAD Pro performs the analysis and design of structure in the same run STAAD
pro uses the command language based input format, which can be created through editor, the
powerful PRE graphics input generator.

STAAD PRE:

STAAD PRE facility allows generation of structural models graphically such as

generation and viewing of structural models for both 2D and 3D structure.

STAAD INTDES:

The option contains set of interactive design facilities for structural components
currently available option include design of cantilever retaining walls, footing and slabs.

UTILITIES:

Apart from various window facilities like temporary exit other program running concurrently
with STAAD. It also offers the following utilities within its graphical interface.

Text editor: for creating and editing the input file

View facilities: for viewing the output file

Plot facilities: for plotting and printing the output file and graphical screen

Data change with CAD programs: for input of drawing data.

On screen calculator: for interactive arithmetic calculation

Staple: it stands STAAD application programming language extension

TYPE OF STRUCTURE:

STAAD Pro is capable of analyzing and designing structures consisting of the both frame and
plate shell elements.

STRUCTURE GEOMETRY AND COORDINATE SYSTEM:

A structure is assembly of individual components like beams, columns, slabs, plates etc. In
the STAAD pro frame elements and plate elements may be used to model the structural
components. Typically modeling of the structure geometry consists of two steps.

1. Identification and description of joints or notes

2. Modelling of members of element through specifications of connectivity between joints.

STADD pro uses two types of coordinate system are associated with each member and are
utilized in member force output on local load specification.

DEPT. OF CIVIL ENGG. 2019-2020

GEOMETRY:

The geometry option allows the user to create the structure geometry and to modify it.

1. Add member/element: Used to create new member and or elements in the model.

2. Break all: Allows the users to split intersecting members in the model

Prismatic property of the following commands is use to specify the section shape and
additional properties.

3.Built in section library: This feature of the program allows the user to specify the section
name of structural steel of standard shapes, manufacture in different countries.

4.Users provided steel sections: The user can provide a customized steel table with
designated steel names can find the member properties.

5.Tapered section: Properties of tapered I section may be provided through member

properties specifications.

6.Constants: The material constants are modules of elastic, weight, density, beta angle,
global axes. Supports are specified as pinned, fixed or fixed butt with different releases.

MEMBER SPECIFICATION:

The member specification option allows specification of the structural condition of individual
members and elements in structure. The specifications are:

Member offset: some members of a structure are at an offset distance from the incident joint.
Any reference from the start or end of that member will always be form the new offset point .

Member release: one or both of a member or elements can be release by removing the
individual degree of freedom from analysis.

Truss/ tension member: when all members in the structure are truss member,

The structure type is declared as truss whereas only some of the member are Truss member.

LOADS

STAAD pro can generate the self-weight of the structure and use it as a uniformly distributed

member loads in analysis load in structure can be specified as;

Member load: these are uniformly distributed load and linearly varying loads and may be

applied directly to a member of a structure.

Joint load: joint loads both faces and moments may be applied to any free joint of a

structural member frame.

LOAD COMBINATION SPECIFICATION

This command may be used to combine the result of the analysis.

ANALYSIS

Following analysis facilities is available in STAAD Pro,

1. Stiffness analysis
2. Second order analysis
3. Dynamic analysis

STIFFNESS ANALYSIS:

The stiffness implemented by STAAD Pro is based on the matrix displacement method. In
the matrix analysis of structures by the displacement method, the structure is first idealized
into a small assembly by discrete structural components. The complete stiffness matrix of the
structure is obtained by the symmetrically summing up the contribution co various member
and the element stiffness. The external loads on the structure are represented as discrete
concentrated loads acting only on model points of the structure. The total number of degree
of freedom represents the number of unknown in the analysis. The solution of equation done
with modified colicky decomposition technique.

RESULT

The features of the STAAD Pro were studied.

MICROSOFT PROJECT
INTRODUCTION
Computer, software and networks as well as the use of interdisciplinary and global work team
have radically changed the work environment. These changes have fueled the need for most
sophisticated projects and thus need a better management. More over today’s operation are
recognizing that, in order to be successful’ they need to be conversant with modern project
management technique. There are certain software specially designed for project
management, which can assist the project managers to execute and control the project
activities effectively in order to meet the sponsor need and expectations from the project.

Microsoft project is a software tool for planning, scheduling and controlling of the
activities involved in the project. Planning involves defining objectives of the project and
listing of different tasks that must be performed and determining the quantity of resource
required and prepare the estimates and duration of each activities to bring out the successful
completion of the object.

Microsoft project is one of the important desktop project management application. The
Microsoft project can be used for project planning, communication, reporting and high level
planning. Network planning is a technique in which large projects are broken down to
individual jobs or events and arrange in logical network. Network analysis help in designing,
planning, coordinating and in decision making in order to complete the project economically
in the minimum available time with the limited available resources.

Besides Microsoft Project, another software available in this field is PRIMA VERA
PROJECT PLANNER.

The important terms related to the network planning are:

EVENT
An event is a specific instant of time, which marks the start or end of an activity. Event
consumes neither time nor resources.

GPTC MUTTOM Page | 38

DEPT. OF CIVIL ENGG. 2019-2020

ACTIVITY
An activity is the actual time of the task and requires time and resources for its completion. It
is the work required to complete a specific task.

PREDECESSOR ACTIVITY
The activity preceding any given activity is called the predecessor activity.

SUCCESSOR ACTIVITY
The activity succeeding to any given activity is called the successor activity.

DURATION
Duration the estimated time or actual time required to complete a task or an activity.

EARLIEST START TIME (EST)

It is defined as the earliest possible time at which an activity can start and is calculated by
moving from first to last event in a network diagram.

EARLIEST FINISH TIME (EFT)

It is the earliest possible time at which an activity can finish.

EFT=EST+ duration of the activity

LATEST FINISH TIME (LFT)

It is calculated by moving from last event to the first event of the network diagram.

LATEST START TIME (LST)

It is the latest possible time by which an activity can start.

LST=LFT- duration of the activity

FLOAT OR SLACK
Slack with reference to an event and float is with reference to an activity. Float is the
difference between time available for completing an activity and the time necessary to
complete the same.

GPTC MUTTOM Page | 39

DEPT. OF CIVIL ENGG. 2019-2020

ACTIVITY
An activity is the actual time of the task and requires time and resources for its completion. It
is the work required to complete a specific task.

TOTAL FLOAT
It is the time pan by which the starting or finishing of an activity can be delayed without
delaying the completion of the project. It is the additional time, which a non critical activity
can consume without increasing the project duration.CRITICAL PATH

It is the sequence of critical activities, which decide the total project duration. A critical path
consumes maximum resources. It is the longest path and consumes maximum time. It is the
one, which connect the event zero or minimum float.

PERT (Programme Evaluation Review technique)

It is a probabilistic model with uncertainity in activity duration. It is an event oriented
approach used for planning, controlling and reviewing the project. The time of for each
activity can be calculated by using three time estimate- optimistic time (to), most likely time
(tm) and pessimistic time (tp). It is used to find applications in the project where resources
(men, material and money) are always made available as when required. It is suitable in
defence project and R&D where activity times cannot be predicted.

CPM (Critical Path Method)

CPM is a deterministic model with well known activity (single) times based upon past
