Job# 1-A: To standardize a pace length by the help of Pacing

Date: 20-01-2018
Place of execution: Umer Hall Ground
Apparatus used:
 Two Ranging Rods

 One 30 meter Fiber Glass Tape

Group No. 3
Observer: 2017-CIV-22
Booker: 2017-CIV-22
Objective of experiment: The main purpose of this experiment is to find the length of
human pace. It is used when rough estimates are suitable and no instruments are
available.
Procedure:
1. Observer walks with normal footsteps and records the number of paces.
2. Record two or more than two observations by walking along the line.
3. Calculate average paces by adding and dividing.
4. Calculate the pace length by dividing the average pace with total length of tape:
𝐾𝑛𝑜𝑤𝑛 𝐿𝑒𝑛𝑔𝑡ℎ
𝑆𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑑𝑎𝑟𝑑𝑖𝑧𝑒𝑑 𝑃𝑎𝑐𝑒 𝐿𝑒𝑛𝑔𝑡ℎ =
𝑁𝑜. 𝑜𝑓 𝑆𝑡𝑒𝑝𝑠
Observation table:

1 30 49 0.61
2 30 50 0.60
3 30 52 0.58
4 30 53 0.57

Job# 1-B: Measurement of length of scheme by pacing
Date: 20-01-2018
Place of execution: Umer Hall Ground
Apparatus used:
 Two Ranging Rods

 One 30 meter Fiber Glass Tape

Group No. 3
Observer: 2017-CIV-22
Booker: 2017-CIV-22
Objective of experiment: The main purpose of this experiment is to find the length with
human pace. It is used when rough estimates are suitable and no instruments are at
hand.

Procedure:
 Mark the points between which length is to be measured by help of Ranging
Rods.
 Walk from one point to the other in a straight line while counting the number of
steps. Repeat by walking back to the first point and counting steps.
 Find Mean Number of Steps.
 Calculate length by formula:
𝐿𝑒𝑛𝑔𝑡ℎ = 𝑆𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑑𝑎𝑟𝑑𝑖𝑧𝑒𝑑 𝑝𝑎𝑐𝑒 ∗ 𝑁𝑢𝑚𝑏𝑒𝑟 𝑜𝑓 𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑝𝑠
The whole job was according to the following scheme:

Observation table:
Line 1st 2nd observation Mean Number of Standard Pace Length of
Observation (steps) Paces Length Line
(steps) (meters)
AB 131 132 131.5 0.59 77.59
BC 184 186 185 0.59 109.15
CD 195 193 194 0.59 114.46
DE 93 89 91 0.59 53.69
EA 130 136 133 0.59 78.47
EB 194 200 197 0.59 116.23
EC 160 168 164 0.59 96.76
Precautions taken:
 Try to walk in your normal pace.
 Try to walk in a straight line.
 Distance of pace should be nearly same.
 At the place where it is not possible to work, than measure that distance by
measuring tape and add it to your original pace length.

Q1. What is the significance of distance measurement by pace length?
Ans: this method is very helpful while you do not have no instrument to measure
distances.
Q 2. When this experiment can be applied?
Ans: The length between two points can be measured when other instruments are not
available.
Q 3. Is this procedure time taking or not?
Ans: Yes, this procedure is more time taking than other methods to measure length.
Q 4. Why every time the numbers of walking steps are different?
Ans: The number of footsteps depends upon the way an individual is walking.
Q 5. Is the length measured by every individual same?
Ans: It is approximately equal. But there are some variations.
Q6. What type of ground surface should be preferable?
Ans: Ground surface should be flat or uniformly sloped and free from holes and heaps.
Q7. Which type of measuring tape is more accurate?
Ans: Invar tape is comparatively more accurate made with alloy of nickel and steel.
Q8. 1 ft. is equal to how many inches?
Ans: 1 ft. Is equal to 12 inches.
Q9. What is the purpose of ranging rods?
Ans: It helps us to mark the end points.
Q10. What is meant by standard pace length?
Ans: It means that how much long is one pace of an individual.
