2. Recognition Signals

Far and near signals are needed to

keep friendly units from firing on each other. Although
the units conducting the linkup exchange radio
frequencies and call signs, the radio should be avoided
as a means of recognition due to the threat of
compromise. Visual and voice recognition signals are
to be planned.

2. Linkup of Moving Unit and
Stationary Unit- Linkup between a moving and a
stationary force requires detailed coordination,
particularly if the stationary force is under enemy
pressure. The moving force must orient on the
stationary force and keep the stationary force advised of
its location. The stationary force guides the lead
element to the contact point by radio or may, if the
enemy situation permits, send out a patrol to meet and
guide the moving force. Guides aid in passage of
minefield and other defensive obstacles in front of and
within the stationary force defense sector. The
stationary force must be prepared to accept the moving
force, to provide guides to its position and, as required,
to position it. If two forces have been directed to merge,
they are vulnerable to enemy attack as they come
together. Guides must deploy the moving force quickly
and efficiently.
a. Actions at the linkup site with two units
moving

In a linkup, the execution begins once the units

move toward the linkup site. If necessary, the units can
use code words movement.

The squad establishes the linkup site and

occupies a rally point close to the linkup site. A team
moves to pinpoint the linkup site and secures it. This
team marks the linkup site using the previously
coordinated recognition signal and positions itself to
observe the site.

The moving platoon also establishes a rally

point close to the linkup site and then sends a squad
forward to pinpoint the linkup site.

The squad should spot the recognition signal

and then initiate the far recognition signal, which is
answered by the squad observing the linkup site.

The team at the linkup site then moves toward

the squad answering the signal and exchanges near
recognition signals. The stationary squad initiates the
signal. Once these units coordinate, the squad arriving
at the linkup site returns to the rally point and guides the
platoon back to the linkup site. The team establishing
the linkup then guides the platoon to the rally point. The
platoon leader then integrates the platoon into the
perimeter.

b. Actions at the linkup with one unit moving

The leaders of both units coordinate with their

respective higher headquarters for location of linkup,
call signs, frequencies, code words, far and near
signals, and control measures. The stationary unit
establishes rally point and sends a team or squad to
secure and mark the linkup point. The moving unit
moves toward the linkup point and establishes a rally
point when close enough to do so.
