Locarno Band featuring Tonye
Aganaba at the Night Market
The Locarno Band with special guest Tonye Aganaba
will be turning up the heat at The Night Market on August
8, 5 pm to 8:30 pm.
Locarno is the Latin project of Paperboys frontman
Tom Landa. The music, like him, is part Mexican but
with strong doses of Cuban son, folk music, pop and
funk. There are threads of son Jarocho and salsa but the
songs are more edgy and contemporary than that. The
music could be compared to Manu Chao, Ozomatli or
Rodrigo and Gabriela but although there are similari-
ties it is truly original and a new flavour in the Latin
music genre.
Tom’s goal is to create music which is heavily influ-
enced by Mexican music but using the elements and
musicians around him in his hometown of Vancouver.

Kalissa Landa on violin, Robin Layne on marimba, con-
gas and timbales, Pedro Mota on guitar an vocals, Aaron
McKinney on bass, Liam MacDonald on drums, congas
and pandero, Mark D’Angelo on trumpet and Nick La
Rivere on trombone.
The night will also feature Tonye Aganaba. Tonye Aga-
naba is a multidisciplinary artist, musician and performer.
They were born in London, England to parents of Nige-
rian and Zimbabwean descent and raised in the pictur-
esque seaside town of Weymouth, Dorset. At the age of
13 Tonye moved to Canada. Tonye’s style is fluid, but can
be described as soul/neo-folk/R&B and although unique
– they have been likened to Lauryn Hill, Ani DiFranco
and Chaka Khan.
The music will be enhanced by a market, hosted by
Trail’s incrEDIBLE Farmers Market and will feature beer,
wine and cider at our adult only beverage garden! You will
be able to enjoy artisanal food from the best food trucks
and vendors in the area including fabulous local artists,
designers and craft-makers.
“Trail & District Arts Council is super excited about
partnering again with incrEDIBLE Trail and we can’t wait
to feel the buzz again at this fabulous summer event,” said
Executive Director Nadine Tremblay. “The combination
of food trucks, vendors, live music, beer garden and the
beautiful setting of Gyro Park is exciting. There will be
something for everybody and we hope that Greater Trail
comes out to take in some music, dance and celebrate
summer together outdoors.” Admission is a $2 minimum

savannah comes to life on the Bailey stage with Simba,
Rafiki and an unforgettable cast of characters as they jour-
ney from Pride Rock to the jungle... and back again, in
this inspiring, coming-of-age tale.
The Lion King Jr is being performed by participants in
our three-week Triple Threat Summer Intensive program.
Young performers aged 7-17 are trained in all three disci-
plines of acting, singing and dancing and then wrap up the
course with a full scale musical theatre production per-
formed before a live audience. Music and lyrics by Elton
John and Tim Rice, additional music and lyrics by Lebo
M, Mark Mancina, Jay Rifkin and Hans Zimmer. Book By

  soil amendment. Pastures and hay fields are good options.
Mercer Celgar will cover the costs of a qualified professional per-
forming soil sampling, obtaining government authorization and
delivery costs of Celgrow soil amendment based on access with a
large truck/pup combination. Acreage should be able to accom-
modate at least 6 truck/pup loads. The two major components of
Celgrow are individual wood fibres lost from the pulping process
and surplus bacteria from the wastewater biological treatment
facility. Wood fibres enhance soil moisture retention and bacteria
are a good source of soil nutrients. The landowner is responsible

Healthy breath and nerve posture
is a simple choice!

your head and shoulders forward and twisted? Can you take

When your shoulders, neck and head are held downward,

expressing low immunity, having an increase in allergies,
colds or pain you might be expressing one of the symptoms

Creston Valley wildlife is active!
Swallows have moved in! Beginning in late May, a pair
of barn swallows was observed near the swallow hotel and
they began nest construction in one of the nest cups. By
the end of June a full clutch of eggs was laid in the nest and
they are expected to hatch any day!
The bats have a new abode! Early in May a new ‘Bat
Condo’ went up on posts along the trail loop near the visi-
tor centre. As the old interpretation centre will be removed
in the near future, this new roosting structure was installed
to provide habitat for the bats that currently live in the
centre. From experience with the one built in 2010 near
Duck Lake, it shouldn’t take long for the bats to find it!

monitoring. We conducted our
annual survey for cormorant on
June 17, 2019. We have not fin-
ished counting the nests yet. We
started monitoring in 2014 and
this is the fourth count in five
years. The number of nests has
remained relatively stable since
2014: 180 (2014), 190 (2016), 179
(2017), 181 (2018). That being
said, if each nest produces three
to five young, there could be close
to 1500 cormorants at one time
near the end of the summer and
luckily, the wetland appears to
be able to support a number of
fish-eating birds, including her-
ons, pelicans, grebes, eagles and
ospreys.
