1 OBJECT
This specification describes the procedure for testing and to perform weld repair works using gas
tungsten-arc welding process (GTAW - TIG) in order to achieve a locally limited post weld heat
treatment of the welded areas (temper bead technique).
2 BASE MATERIALS
This specification is valid for martensitic steel forging: X3CrNiMo13-4 (1.4313).
4 REPAIR PROCESS
4.1 WELDING DATA PROCESSES
GTAW process will be used for minor welding volume and/or thin wall thickness.
WPS (welding process specification) and WQR (welder qualification record) has to be submitted
before any weld repairs.
a) Welding of the reinforcement up to 3,5 mm ± 0,5 mm onto the surface contour at the same time of
the excavation built up.
b) Measure of the reinforcement.
c) Cooling down of the weld according to table below till room temperature (≤ 25°C).
Post welds heat treatment parameters
Wall thickness (mm) < 50 50 - 100 100 - 150 >150
Cooling Maximal cooling rate (C°/h) 120 60 50 40
e) Pre-heating of the weld area according to the heat treatment data of the base material.
f) Welding of 2-3 annealing layers using the GTAW/TIG process, without melting the base material
(distance to the border line about 2-3mm).
g) Cooling down of the weld till room temperature (≤ 25°C).
h) Mechanical treatment (milling, grinding) of the annealing layer and welded reinforcement to reach
theoretical profile (initial surface). Locally overheating due to the grinding process has to be
avoided.
i) NDT on repaired areas: PT and VT (refer to paragraph 3.2 for applicable specification).
j) Measure of the hardness of the welded areas. See acceptance criteria in chapter 6.
The designated effect by applying the temper bead technique will be achieved only if the fusion line of
the temper layer does not crossing the surface contour (Theoretical profile). The thermal energy due to
the molten filler metal of the temper layers causes a locally limited annealing effect of the repaired area
by radiant heating with an improvement of the material properties on the surface (see sketch below).
6 HARDNESS RESULTS
A successfully applied temper bead technique leads to a reduction of the hardness values on the
finished surface (HAZ included).
