HIGHLIGHTS OF COMPLETED
PROJECTS
Title:
Establishment of performance Assurance structural
integrity aspects in Alumina based porcelain Insulators

Outcome:
Studies have been carried out to investigate the structural
integrity aspects as well as performance of porcelain
insulator samples with varying defects and without
Defects.
Important findings are:
 %  - Al2O3 &  - quartz are critical parameters
rather than the total Alumina and silica content.

 New test method is developed for determination of %

 - Al2O3 using XRD

 Corundum phase of Alumina – restricts propagation

of cracks. Optimum % of Alumina is found to be
35.0%. Higher % imparts brittleness due to glassy
matrix.
 Microstructural manifestations – including controlled
mullitic distribution, compositional homogeneity,
porosity play supporting role
Title:
Development of Data acquisition Software for 8 channel
High speed Digital Storage Oscilloscope

Outcome:
Data acquisition software developed to integrate 8 channel
storage oscilloscope to acquire data during short circuit
testing. The work facilitated automation of the test facility
thereby reducing time taken for conducting the tests
Title: Advanced Technique to study the influence of residual
stress on the structural integrity of the plant components
OUTCOME

 Improved by over coming existing limitations on the

diffraction angle measurement.

 Software has been developed to over come earlier

limitations. This has helped in improving the analytical
capacity of the facility

 Improved facility has been utilized effectively by

organizations like M/s ISRO, M/s HAL, M/s Chemhood
Industries etc.
Title: Synthesis, characterization and use of Nitrogen
hector cycles for curing flame retardent properties of
halogenated & non-halogenated systems
OUTCOME
• Several compositions with Ligands and Nitrogen hetro
cycles have been prepared and characterized for FRLS
properties.
• Influence of the heterocycles on the electrical properties
of the cured epoxy resin system at elevated temperature
studied.
• Concentraqtion of heterocycles of the resin system has
been standardized using DSC cure studies.
Title: A Mobile facility for field Evaluation of Accuracy of
Current Transformers and Losses of distribution Transformers.
OUTCOME
 On-site requirements of various clients can be attended to
quickly.
 Saves the cost and hassles of transport of equipment to be
tested.Tests would be faster and cheaper for the clients and can
be done while in service at site..
 The facility can be used as stand-by for laboratory use.
 The mobile set up motivates regular appraisal of DTs and CTs
which in turn results in reduction of failure rates & increase in
their operational efficiency.
 Additional revenue of about Rs. 10 lakhs estimated.
 Facilities have been used extensively in the field testing at RTDS,
Raichur, APTRANSCO, M/s Ogdan Balaji Services, Muduai etc.
Title: Design & Development of interrupting Chamber.

OUTCOME

Development indigenous technology for the

chamber.

Become self sufficient.

Saving on foreign exchange and down time of

procurement.
Title: Design and fabrication of non contact type travel
recorders for analysis of circuit breaker characteristics

OUTCOME
•The aim of the Project is to develop suitable non contact type
travel recording system for recording of contact travel
characteristics of different ratings of circuit breakers.

•Laser based sensors are identified for recording of contact

travel characteristics for medium voltage circuit breakers.

•Ultrasonic sensors are identified for recording of contact travel

characteristics of HV and EHV circuit breakers. Suitable
measuring systems like fibre optic transmitter receiver
identified
TITLE: Improvements in measuring system for
Lightning impulse tests at lower test
voltages

OUTCOME

Design and development of 500 kV Voltage

Divider used for testing distribution / power
transformers up to 33 kV rating, line traps,
reactors, voltage transformers etc.
