Student Evaluation & Monitoring
A test is an assessment intended to measure a
test taker’s knowledge, skill, aptitude,
physical fitness or classification in many
other topics.

Ancient China was the first country that

implemented a nationwide test called the
imperial examination ;established by the SUI
Dynasty at 605 AD.
• Multiple choice
• Written tests
• True/False
• Matching
• Fill in the blank
• Essay writings
• Mathematical questions
Supporters of tests provide the following
reasons:
• Feedback or diagnosis of test taker’s
performance
• Fair and efficient
• Promotes accountability
• Prediction and selection
• Improves performance
ž Narrows curricular format and
encourages teaching to the test.
ž Poor predictive quality.
ž The intellectual capacity of stressful
candidates is not properly reflected.
ž Culturally or socioeconomically biased.
ž Significance of the test
ž Size of the class
ž Competence of the class as in a mixed
ability class
ž Format of the test
ž The desired grade or score required
ž The pedagogy involved
• Bloom taxonomy is a system of specifications that
enable educational training and learning to be
planned and measured properly.
• Bloom's Taxonomy has therefore since 1956 provided a
basis for ideas which have been used (and developed)
around the world by academics, educators, teachers
and trainers, for the preparation of learning evaluation
materials.
• Bloom's Taxonomy model is in three parts:
1. Cognitive domain (intellectual capability, ie.,
knowledge, or 'think')
2. Affective domain (feelings, emotions and behaviour)
3. Psychomotor domain (manual and physical skills, ie.,
skills, or 'do')

ž Teaching is a process of communicating
and imparting knowledge

ž Communication skills is of paramount

importance to the social and educational
development of the student
ž Communication originated from the
Latin word ‘communicare’ which means
to share or establish commonness.

ž Communication can be described as a

process of transmitting and receiving
messages both verbal and non-verbal
for better understanding.
Effective communication means good
communication involving the element of
feedback. It is a two-way process of transmitting
messages between & among individuals, which
result in understanding.
Effective communication involves 5 important
elements, namely; Sender, Message, Medium,
Receiver and Feedback as shown below:
Educational instruction lies on the ability to
communicate effectively with students to
foster faster learning and enhance
understanding.

Ogili (2001) contend that the best strategy

for effective communication in educational
instructions is guaranteeing continual use of
skills by both the teachers and learners .
Ogili further asserts that learners generally remember:
ž 10 percent of what they read
ž 20 percent of what they hear
ž 30 percent of what they see
ž 50 percent of what they hear and see
ž 70 percent of what they say
ž 90 percent of what they say as they do a thing.

ž Verbal methods – involving mainly speech such
as: Face-to-face, Meeting, Lecturing, Debates,
etc…

ž Written methods – involves writing and printed

materials such as: textbooks, journals, hand-
outs, blackboard writing, etc…

ž Visual methods – involving use of television,

overhead projectors, power point, pictures,
charts, graphs, etc…
ICTs stand for information and communication
technologies and are defined, as a “diverse set
of technological tools and resources used to
communicate, and to create, disseminate,
store, and manage information.” These
technologies include computers, the Internet,
broadcasting technologies (radio and
television), and telephony.
ICT has been touted as potentially powerful
enabling tools for educational change and
reform. ICT helps to:
ž Expand access to education
ž strengthen the relevance of education
ž raise educational quality
ž make teaching and learning into an engaging
and a active process
ž Computers in schools provides wider access to
ICT and encourages new ways of learning
ž Lack of infrastructures , ICT equipment
and other facilities

ž Traditional communication methods are

not interactive and innovative enough
which often lead to boredom

ž Reluctance in using ICT by ‘old’ teachers

ž Use of new teaching aid and ICT.
ž Ensure proper use of instructional material and
communication skills.
ž Teacher training is important and should be
constantly done.
ž Proper planning needed from the higher authorities
and clearly defined objectives should be stated of
the educational system in our country.
ž Effective use of the internet.
ž Government should consider education as the
largest industry and provide the necessary ICT tools
and facilities to enhance quality of education in the
country.
The act of integrating ICT into teaching and
learning process is a complex process and one
that may encounter a number of difficulties such
as:

ž Lack of teacher confidence – one factor that

prevent teachers from using ICT in teaching is their
lack of confidence and the fear to fail.

ž Lack of competence – certain teachers are

reluctant to use ICT in teaching because they lack
the necessary skills and competence
ž Lack of time – it has also been noted that many
teachers have the ability and competence in using
ICT but they still make little use of these technologies
in class because they do not have enough time.
ž Lack of effective training for teachers.
ž Lack of accessibility – poor access to resources,
including home access is another barrier that
discourages teachers from integrating ICT into
education.
ž Lack of technical support - Poor technical support
might prevent effective use of ICT - breakdown of
computers, malfunctioning of equipment might
discourage teachers to adopt new educational
technologies in class.
STRENGTHS WEAKNESSES
• Willingness for teachers and other • Lack of infrastructure and
stakeholders to improve computer facilities
communication process at school •Lack of resources
•School has potential for successful •Lack of competence from certain

•New technology prepares students the net
to develop competencies in many •Rate of obsolescence very high in

ž ICT and e-learning offers opportunity to raise
educational standards in schools
ž Large range of ICT tools are available for teaching
and learning
ž Closes the gap of “Digital Divide”
ž Involvement of teachers and parents is important
ž Schools will need funding, access and training
A defining trait of social software today is
the ability to speak into the context others
have created.
ž A blog is a basic web page with posts
presented in reverse chronological order.
ž Blogging enables unique opportunities for
educators to improve communication with
(and between) learners, increase depth of
learning through reflection, and enable the
formation of diverse viewpoints and
perspectives. Perhaps most importantly,
they enable educators to connect with
each other.
ž Blogs are simple tools for learners and
educators to use in teaching and
learning. Educators can use a blogs to
update learners on course activities,
post reflections on in-class or online
conversations, and to share journal
articles and related course resources.
ž A wiki is basically a simple web page
that anyone can edit
ž Wikis are chaotic, informal knowledge
spaces. Wikis enable individuals to
create a collective resource.
Whereas blogs enable individual
voices, a wiki over-writes individuality.
ž Wikis can be open - where anyone can
create an account and edit - or closed -
requiring approval from a site
administrator.
ž Wikis, like any tool for learning, are limited in use primarily
by the creativity of the instructor or designer. Common
uses include:
• Course notes
ž Publish course syllabus and handouts
ž FAQ
ž Collaborative writing and group work
ž Brainstorming
ž Inviting experts (whose work may/may not be the focus of
the wiki) to review completeness of learner wikis
ž Content creation with educators from other
universities/schools
ž Allows students to engage in collaborative activities that
extend well beyond the classroom walls

software and their strengths and
weaknesses
ž We want to move to an ERP for
education
ž We should adopt the best practices
