Wolves in Throne Room offer what has been called a ‘deep eco-
metal’ (Davis), and articulate a pagan and ecological world-view
which is not without its own political equivocations. In fact,
Famine picks up this point by noting to the interviewer that
‘Ecologism was born in an extreme right-wing context … as part
of the völkish concept (the inseparable unity between folk and
land, a land which should be protected as much as revered)’
and, more controversially, that ‘it is only later on that left-wing
groups unjustly monopolized ecologistic positions’ (Famine,
Travis interview).
Of more importance is the marker that Famine lays down to
distinguish the true aesthetico-political programme of Black
Metal from any imitation: what has to be rejected is any kind of
abstract levelling that would suppose constitutive equality,
which threatens to implode a neo-Nietzschean politics of
hierarchy and rank (we only have to recall Nietzsche’s constant
diatribes against the ‘reactive’ and levelling tendencies of
democracy, Christianity, anarchism, and socialism, as forms of
‘herd’ or ‘slave’ morality). A ‘left-wing Black Metal’ is, for
Famine, a contradiction in terms. What we have is the spectacle
of a war on abstraction carried out by means of further abstractions:
the abstraction of Satanism and national or territorial essence
opposed to the abstractions of liberal democracy.

Famine states that the next Peste Noire album will be ‘pure reggae’
(Travis Interview), inhabiting his usual mode of deliberate
provocation, but also implying his own ability to define a true Black
Metal, in quasi-Duchampian mode, as whatever he nominates.

nostalgia? For Peste Noire and Sale Famine we cannot split this
splitting: the antagonistic One of Black Metal is composed
through the permanent clash between the ‘angelic’ or ‘virile’
elements of the lost / impossible past and the ‘noise’ that is
representative of a fallen modern world – this quasi-‘dialectical’
tension cannot be divided again. Famine’s ‘boyscout Satanism’
(Travis interview) – Sieg Hell instead of Sieg Heil, and
Nietzschean übermensch sodomy – is predicated on the
retention of an aesthetic and political ‘fractured unity’.

militancy. Again the
antagonistic Two
ruptures the One: not a
wolf in the throne room,
but wolves (a Deleuzo-
Guattarian pack,
persumably, rather than
the Oedipalised family of
wolves) (‘headless’).
Certainly, as Williams
does, we can stress that
Black Metal deploys a
‘corrosive negativity
which takes as its first
target the very
individualism black metal reifies’ (‘headless’), but we could also
argue that this Stirnerite dismantling of the ego can easily be re-
territorialised. A politicised dissolution of the ego can serve to
recompose a reified and purified abstraction of the elite group or
community (as implied by Stirner’s ‘union of egoists’). We could
recall Freud’s haute-liberal hostility to just such dissolutions of
the ego in the crowd precisely because such dissolutions depend
on the figure of the leader or the One. This is exactly the point
made by Famine: ‘Through P[este] N[oire] I created an IDEAL
and LESS FRAGILE ego’ (Zero Tolerance interview). This ego is
‘Ideal’ because aestheticised, an auto-constitution of the new self,
and ‘less fragile’, ‘because thanks to PN I break free from my
little and ephemeral body to become incarnate somewhere else’
