Thanksgiving

Delphos council 1362 of
the Knights of Columbus will
offer Thanksgiving dinners to
those who are unable to oth-
erwise partake of a traditional
holiday meal.
The dinners will be served
from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at the
chapter hall. Meals will also be
delivered from 10:30-11:30 a.m.
The meal will consist of
turkey, dressing, cranberry
salad, pie, a dinner roll, veg-
etable and coffee.

When is it just too much?
I know when I was younger I would usu-
ally answer this question — NEVER!!!!!. But
I must admit with time and yes, with age, my
perspective has changed. What brought on all
this reflection? The answer is Las Vegas.
It was our big 30th wedding anniversary
this year and my husband and I thought we
would venture west to the city that never
speaks: what happens in Vegas, stays in
Vegas. But in this case, I am making an
exception.
We stayed at “Paris.” It was true to its
name and brought to life the beautiful side of
that French capital. When the airport shuttle
dropped us off, we entered onto Paris’ cob-
blestone streets. Our first site was miles and
miles of penny slots and quarter slots and dol-
lar slots and gaming table after gaming table
as far as the eye could see. The “Eiffel Tower”
was built almost to scale INSIDE the resort
and the “avenues” darted off in 20 different
directions. We had to ask for directions three
times just to make it to the front desk. That is
when I figured out us little ole’ Delphos folk
were going to be in for a real eye-opening
experience.
We were starved after our long flight
and food became a priority. Endless buffets,
crepe cafes, pastry shops, full French cuisine
restaurants — and that was all just on the
first level of the hotel. How can we possibly
choose? We were roaming aimlessly. We felt
like Hansel and Gretel. Should we have left
bread crumbs or maybe poker chips to find
our way back?
We thought a good plan would be to just
check out things and keep a mental note of
where we might like to have our anniversary
supper. We walked and talked and wandered
about and finally made a decision on where
and when to eat. Amen, I said. No second
thoughts. We made our choice for the night.
But, after countless turns, rides on escalators
and elevators, we couldn’t remember how to
get back to the chosen spot. Where was that
trail of poker chips?
The resort was just TOOOO BIGGGG and
we were SOOOOO LOST and of course it was

Venturing out the next day, the casinos and
resorts got bigger and bigger and bigger, each
one outdoing the one before. Is this the real
world or just some dream I am having from
a full tummy of mimosas (which I had never
had before and are indeed delicious)?
Then on about the third day of walking,
walking and walking and realizing that there
was no way we were going to get to half the
things on my pre-trip “had to see” list, I began
to contemplate on the TOO MUCH theory. If
I only had 15 choices of restaurants instead
of 2 million, I would have been happy. If
we only had to choose between Cher, Barry
Manilow or Garth Brooks shows and not
35,000 others, I would be happy. Don’t get
me wrong; I loved seeing it all but I realized
I don’t need it all and so much of it. We had
a wonderful trip and I am glad Las Vegas is
what it is — unique and beyond believable in
more ways that I can describe. But it is just
tooooo much for me.
We decided right then that it’s not really
any better to have more, it’s not really any
better to be bigger and it’s not really any bet-
ter to be grander. I think sometimes we think
we need it all or more of it and never realize
we already have just what we need and that
should be enough.

Three Bears: not too big, not too small — it’s
just right.

Conformity is something
I think about often; more
with each passing year.
Living in a small town, par-
ticularly after going away to
college in a bigger city and
being surrounded by a myr-
iad of diversity, a plethora
of dissenting opinions and
countless inspiring, color-
ful individuals who weren’t
afraid to express themselves
causes anyone who has the
audacity to be “different” to
stand out that much more.
(And I’m not knocking
small towns — just making
an observation.
In the words of John
Mellencamp, “But my bed is
in a small town and that’s good
enough for me.”) Personally,
I’m a fan of diversity. Even if
I don’t agree with someone, I
find it refreshing when peo-
ple have the confidence and
conviction to be themselves
instead of adhering to some
arbitrary standard as dictated
by societal norms.
Oscar Wilde said of con-

It is the non-conform-
ist who changes the rules.
Revolutions begin with the

unquietly. I applaud anyone
who has the cajones to do
this. The question, I suppose,
is how to stay true to oneself
and resist conforming while
maintaining a place in soci-
ety — a job, for one thing.
Even those who don’t con-
sider themselves to be “reb-
els” have found it a challenge
to conform to the rules in
some of the establishments
where they have worked.
Okay, so maybe that’s an
understatement. For example,
in my case, I have a philoso-
phy on life that is somewhat
contrasting from many peo-
tially, survive in society? I
think the answer’s probably
different for everyone. For
me, knowing I need a job
means that, for one thing, I’ll
remove my nose ring, which
is against my workplace’s
dress code. While I loved
that cute little diamond, it
isn’t worth the cost of a job.
I think it depends upon the
strength of a person’s con-
victions and what he or she
is willing to sacrifice for the
sake of maintaining a certain
level of comfort, which for
me, entails a paycheck. My
nose shall go unadorned.
All in all, I think it’s a life-
long struggle for many people
to retain their individuality
while simultaneously acqui-
escing to the “rules” enough
to remain a productive mem-
ber of society. At the same
time, I think of my favorite

be nobody but yourself in a
world which is doing its best,
night and day, to make you
everybody else means to fight

of Strickland appointments
still pending. They will be

ing off the field:
The Buckeye–
Wolverine
Challenge for
Life.
In its fifth
year, the life-
saving competi-
tion is designed
to motivate fans
across the states
of Ohio and
Michigan to save lives and
register as organ and tissue
donors. The states are com-
peting to see who can register
the most new organ and tis-
sue donors before Nov. 25.
Currently, Michigan is win-
ning by more than 19,000
new registrants.
The competition has
received support from The
Ohio State University foot-
ball coach, Jim Tressel.

Utah was a shock to most fans.

MISSOURI: It just seems that
all season, the home-field advan-
tage has been even more of a pro-
nounced edge, especially in Top-25
matchups. No, this is not a men’s
basketball game, either. Missouri
played well at home and then falls
apart on the road. Methinks that
will happen again this week in
Columbia, with K-State the victim.
ALABAMA: This might be
a Top-25 matchup but I think
Crimson Tide will be an angry,
mad bunch of “elephants” — their
mascot — after seeing their BCS
title hopes all but vanish. They
might pound MSU into a trillion
corpuscles.
FLORIDA: The Ole Ball Coach
returns to The Swamp. This might
be one of the day’s upset specials
but I just think Gators will be ready,
especially with the Gamecocks
stinging from home loss to Hogs.
SYRACUSE: A game I threw
in there to keep people alert. The
Orange are a surprising team after
a few years squeezed into juice.
Their defense is pretty good. Even
though this game is in New Jersey,
I like the Orange on the road.
OHIO STATE: Buckeyes are
coming off a bye week. Penn State
gave JoePa his 400th win in Happy
Valley. Don’t make it 401 this
week. I think Buckeyes still have
hopes of a BCS title game, so they
mist win and hope like hecklydarn
to get a LOT of help, so defense
stymies Lions and offense does just
enough.
NORTH CAROLINA: Every
time you think this Tar Heel team
is down, they won’t go away. Who
am I to argue? Butch Davis gets it
done in Chapel Hill.
PROS
PITTSBURGH: Patriots utterly
stuck up the joint in Cleveland last
week. I know Randy Moss was a
distraction but he was a FAST dis-
traction. No one stretches the field.
Not good against Blitzburgh. Plus,
Patriots defense not up to usual
standards.
CHICAGO: Brett Favre has
served notice this is his FINAL sea-
son. ....... Bears not impressed. The
defense is again nasty and Vikings
are in turmoil. Give Da Bears a
close win in old Norris Division
(thanks, Boomer Berman) clash.
PHILADELPHIA: News flash!
Eagles could be pretty good!
Defense is better than expected
and the offense is doing its part.
Redskins just don’t have enough
healthy weapons.
DENVER: Broncos have had a
week to stew over utter humiliation
by Raiders two weeks ago. Chiefs
coming off tough loss to Raiders
last week. Broncos come back with
a vengeance, especially in Mile
High city.
BUFFALO: Bills have been oh-
so-close lately. Lions again without
Matthew Stafford, perhaps for the
season. I predict Buffalo’s first
win.
ST. LOUIS: Two teams coming
off bye weeks. Bradford is a legit
NFL quarterback now and Rams
are a much better defense. Troy
Smith is the starter by The Bay.
Rams continue surprising 2010.

On the other hand, Missouri has
lost its last two games after win-
ning 7 in a row to start the season.
The Tigers are at home and get
back on track this week with a win
at home.
Alabama; Alabama is coming
off a tough loss to LSU and need
to get a win to keep from their third
SEC loss. State has won six in a
row but not against quality oppo-
nents. The Tide shouldn’t have a
problem getting back on the win-
ning track. Bama wins to get their
5th SEC win.
Florida; Number 23 Florida
goes up against 22 South Carolina
in what could be a very good con-
test. The Gators got two wins in a
row after dropping three. On the
other hand, the Gamecocks got
thumped by the Razorbacks last
week, so the Gators should take this
one at home.
Syracuse; Not one of the bet-
ter games in our pick selection
this week (Editor’s Note: Tsk,
tsk. That’s why I chose it; these
two teams are not always in the
national spotlight!) but could be
the upset in our picks. However,
I’m going to play it safe and go
with the Orange.
Ohio State; The Buckeyes are
rested after their butt-thumping of
Minnesota and Penn State gave
JoePa win number 400 a week
ago. He won’t be getting 401 this
weekend as Ohio State wins in the
’Shoe.
Virginia Tech; After their upset
to James Madison, the Hokies have
been mad; they won seven in a row
and look to make it eight this week
against the Tar Heels and maintain
their unbeaten record in the confer-
ence.
Pro:
New England; The Patriots
looked putrid against the Browns
last week, while the Steelers got the
breaks again on Monday night and
if it not be for a couple of blunders
by the Bengals, could have very
well lost. That being said, I can’t
see New England playing that bad
two weeks in a row; they drop Big
Ben and the Steelers.
Minnesota; Bret Favre wheeled
his magic again last week, bringing
the Vikings back from the dead
and saving their coach’s job (for
now). They give Childress one
more week on the sidelines with a
win at Chicago
Philadelphia; The Eagles
“upset” the Colts last week and
have already beaten the Redskins
earlier in the season. I think Philly
rides the high from their win last
week to sweep the series.
Kansas City; Denver has lost 4
of 5, while the Chiefs got nipped
in overtime last week vs. Oakland.
Denver is awful and the Chiefs
seem to be for real. KC goes into
the Mile High City and gets back
on the winning track.
Detroit; The Toronto... I mean,
Buffalo Bills have a golden oppor-
tunity to get their first win on the
season but I’m just not feeling it.
The Lions go into Buffalo and take
a ‘W’.
St. Louis; The Rams have
already won more games this sea-
son than in the past two; they add
another this week at Candlestick.

Jays’ end Ada’s season
for 3rd straight year

FINDLAY — Ada more
than doubled St. John’s in num-
ber of plays and time-of-pos-
session, running off 84 plays to
only 36 for the Blue and Gold.
Talk about a meaningless
stat.
The Jays still outgained the
Bulldogs 415-305, doing far
more with the ball in running
up a 42-14 Region 22 semifinal
triumph on the turf of Donnell
Stadium in Findlay.
The Jays (12-0), in eliminat-
ing the Bulldogs for the third
straight season, meet up with
fellow unbeaten McComb
(12-0) next Friday at a site to
be determined in the regional
finals.
The Jays forced a 3-and-out
on the Ada (10-2) offense on
the first series but got pinned
deep in their territory.
The next Ada series started
at the 26 and used up 13 plays
to reach the Jays’ 12. However,
Konnor Baker (33-of-47 pass-
ing, 268 yards, utilizing the
short-passing game) was picked
off by junior cornerback Tanner
Calvelage at the 5.
“That was a big momentum-
changer right there. They were
ready to score; Tanner did a
great job stepping in front of
the receiver,” Jays coach Todd
Schulte began.
The Jays got out of a pickle
and reached the 48 before they
had to punt, thus changing the
all-important field position,
with Alex Recker (4 punts,
45-yard average) pinning Ada
at their 7.
On another 3-and-out, senior
Tyler Bergfeld returned the punt
17 yards to the Ada 20. From
there, it took one play: a trap
inside right guard by junior full-
back Jordan Bergfeld (5 rushes,
88 yards); he easily cleared the
line of scrimmage and veered to
the right sideline and the pylon
for the tally. Junior Josh Rode
made it 7-0 with 9:38 showing
in the second period.
“I talked before the game
about the field-position battle
and how it would be a key to
tonight’s game. We struggled
to get it early but it eventually
went in our favor and we scored
first because of it,” Schulte con-
tinued.
Another 3-and-out left St.
John’s starting at the 30. The

Troubled cruise shows unpredictability of the sea

LOS ANGELES — A luxury cruise liner
that limped into San Diego after a fire knocked
out its power was lucky in many ways — no
one was killed or even seriously hurt, a nearby
Navy vessel came quickly with supplies and
the mishap occurred in tranquil waters.
Yet the drawn-out tale of the stricken ship
shows just how quickly things can go wrong
on a giant floating city carrying thousands
of people, and it’s prompting a closer look at
whether ocean liners are properly equipped
to deal with the litany of problems that could
strike: rogue waves, norovirus outbreaks and
mechanical problems that disable ships in
treacherous weather.
“If you want a completely predictable vaca-
tion don’t go on the sea,” said Carolyn Spencer
Brown, editor of the industry trade publication

“That raises a lot of concerns.”
Four years ago, the Star Princess oceanliner
caught fire on a windy night in the Atlantic
Ocean as it headed toward Jamaica. One
person was killed, 11 injured and 150 cabins
damaged before the crew could douse the
flames, which were believed to be caused by
a cigarette.
As investigators try to determine what
happened aboard the Splendor, Higgins said
they likely will look at the ship’s equipment
and also the crew’s response. Cruise ships
have extensive contingency plans and drills
that must pass muster with the Coast Guard,
said Eric Ruff, executive vice president of the
Cruise Lines International Association. The
Coast Guard said it examined the ship’s smoke
and heat detection systems, sprinkler and engi-
neering systems just a day before the engine
blew and found no deficiencies.
The National Transportation Safety Board
said the probe into the fire’s cause would be
conducted by Panama, where the ship is reg-
istered. Panama agreed to let the U.S. Coast
Guard join the investigation because most of
the passengers were U.S. citizens, and two
NTSB experts will assist, the NTSB said.
Ships like ocean liners are governed by the
laws of the country where they are registered
in and under whose flag they sail.
In order to raise revenue, Lipcon said, some
small countries such as Panama and Liberia
are known to exempt ship employees from
labor regulations governing the number of
consecutive days they are required to work
and the number of hours they are given off
between shifts. Lipcon said this has sometimes
resulted in crew members so tired they pose a
serious threat to the safety of passengers.
“We found a study in Australia that indicat-
ed a tired worker, someone who worked shifts
of more than 10 hours, reacted the same as a
person does when driving while intoxicated,”
he said. “That means you could have a ship run
by a bunch of people who are the equivalent of
people who drive when intoxicated.”
He also said such countries are reluctant to
conduct strenuous investigations when some-
thing does go wrong on a ship because that
could result in the operator being required to
make costly improvements.
“I think you’ll find that Panama will just
overlook the whole thing,” he said of the
Splendor mishap. “Otherwise they might have
to spend money, and that would hurt Panama’s
flag of convenience business.”
