Introduction
If you’ve ever dreamt of hotwiring fast cars, taking them on joyrides, and dodging the
police, get ready for a one-way ticket to the fast lane! Choose your city and scope out the
hottest cars in the parking lot. Then move in and take someone else’s pride and joy for a
ride. Outrun the police, elude roadblocks and cash in on your stolen car. Hit the gas and
go! Any way you look at it, you’re in for a wild ride in Speed Thief.
Menu Controls
Speed Thief features a mouse-controlled, user-friendly menu system. Each menu screen
has up to three buttons in the top right corner. The left and right cursor arrows allow you
to move “Back” or to "Continue” within the menu system. The "X ” button allows you to
exit the game menu at any point, returning to your Windows desktop.
TAKE A JOYRIDE
This option takes you to the Parking Lot. There are plenty of cars here to choose from—
other people’s cars. But in this game, you’re a thief! So move in on the car you want, and
hotwire it. It’s yours for a joyride!
MOST WANTED
If you want to see the best of the best, check the Most Wanted—all neatly compiled by
your local police department. You’ll find some of the fastest Speed Thief players out
there. Perhaps one day, even your name will be top of the list.

GAME OPTIONS
You might want to change the configuration of the game to suit your tastes. If so, take a
pit stop here before hitting the fast lane.
Take a Joyride
A speed thief is an adrenalin junky who steals cars and goes joyriding. That’s where you
come in. So get ready for the ride of your life by selecting TAKE A JOYRIDE from the
Main Menu. This takes you to the Parking Lot.
Keep in mind that when you’re just starting out, your car choices will be somewhat
limited. Only the most experienced speed thieves can steal the best cars. So start small
and build your rep. Steal cars. Take them to the docks, and turn them into cash. This will
give you the Credits you need to build your rep. The more credits you have, the more
vehicles and cities you’ll unlock!
Once you’ve chosen your car, select the Continue button to go on to the City Selection
Screen. (You can also return to the Main Menu by clicking the Back button.)

City Tracks
When you’ve hotwired your car and are comfortably in someone else’s driver’s seat, it’s
time to choose a City Track.
The following tracks are arranged in ascending difficulty, length and overall police
presence:
--Basic Tracks--
Aberdeen harbor, for clients in Bergen
Hull harbor, for clients in Rotterdam
--Advanced Tracks--
Port Talbot harbor, for clients in Cork
Plymouth harbor, for clients in Santander
Harwich harbor, for clients in Hamburg
Southampton harbor, for clients in Cherbourg
Newhaven harbor, for clients in Dieppe
Dover harbor, for clients in Calais
Ramsgate harbor, for clients in Oostende
Liverpool harbor, for clients in Belfast
When you’re first starting along a life of crime, only the first two harbor runs are
available. To try your luck in any of the other cities, you’ll first have to build some
experience and credits. When you’re ready for a true challenge, try stealing a police car
in Liverpool. With a high police density and a very long track, you’ll have to use all your
skills as a speed thief!
When your finished selecting a City, click the Continue button to start the game. This
will take you to your Crime Diary. (You can always click the Back button to choose
another vehicle.)
When your finished selecting a City, click the Continue button to start the game. This
will take you to your Crime Diary. (You can always click the Back button to choose

Burning Rubber
You’ve got your car. You’ve got your city and your credentials. You’re ready to race
now. Don’t expect the cops to be snoozing. So hit the gas and race for all you’re worth.
—For instructions on controlling your car, see the Options section of this manual—
Once you reach the docks, the game will display your final track time and the value of
your stolen car. Remember, the better the condition of your car, the higher the value at
the docks. Also, difficult tracks command higher prices. Once you’re skilled, it can really
pay to run those hard tracks.
If you ever need to pause the action, just press the Escape (ESC) key. This will call up a
menu, allowing you to choose from a number of options: Exit To Main Menu, Back To
Track Selection, Restart This Track and Continue.
A last piece of advice. No one wants to buy a smashed car. Keep ‘em mint. And
remember, you’re a thief. Don’t get caught.
Camera Views
If you’re looking for a little different perspective, Speed Thief allows you to view the
chase from a number of different camera angles. The function keys (F1 through F12)
allow you to change your view at any time.
Most Wanted
If you’re the fastest speed thief out there, if you can back words with cash winnings,
you’ll be on the police Most Wanted list. And that’s exactly where an adrenalin junky
like you wants to be.
Clicking the Back arrow will return you to the Main Menu.
5
Game Options
The Game Options Menu will allow you to change the settings in Speed Thief. This
includes your controller settings, plus your graphics and music settings.
By clicking on a particular setting (Controller, Graphics or Music), you can cycle through
the various settings available.
Controllers
In Speed Thief, you can play using any one of a number of controller options: Keyboard,
Wheel, Mouse, Joystick, or GamePad.
Technical Note: When selecting the controller for use in the game, keep in mind that only
those devices available on the computer and detected by DirectX will be available. If a
controller does not appear as an option, check to see whether:
1) Is the controller connected to your computer?
2) Do you own the device? (You might want to head to your local shop for a nice
wheel.)
3) Is the controller device set up correctly under Windows DirectX?
KEYBOARD
The Cursor Arrow Keys turn left and right. The Up Arrow accelerates; the Down Arrow
brakes.
WHEEL
Use your Wheel controls as normal for any standard racing game, turning to steer and
using the acceleration and braking pedals as appropriate. If you have any questions about
Wheel use, please refer to your Wheel manual.
MOUSE
Use the Left Button for acceleration and the Right Button for braking. Move the mouse
left and right to steer your car.
JOYSTICK
Left and Right steers the car. Pointing the stick Up accelerates. Pulling Down brakes.
GAME PAD
The Left and Right arrows steer the car. Up accelerates, and Down brakes.

Graphics and Music
You may set the graphical detail in the game to Low, Medium or High. This may affect
the game’s performance on your computer. If you are experiencing game slow-downs or
“hiccups”, you might try experimenting with Low or Medium graphics detail.
This area of Options also allows you to Enable or Disable game music.
During the race, try to keep your vehicle damage to a minimum. Dents and dings will
count against the sale value of your car, once you bring it to the docks. In addition, major
damage can cause vehicle breakdowns, which makes it pretty easy for the cops to catch
you sitting on stolen property.
Also keep an eye on the map to the left. The blue signs indicate a police presence.
Sometimes the police will try to chase you. Other times they’ll work to set up a roadblock
ahead. Keep a cool head when dealing with these obstacles. There’s a lot of cash waiting
for you at the docks!
At any time during the game, you can press the ESC key to pause. While giving you a
breather, this also brings up an in-game menu.
