WHAT HAVE WE BEEN UP TO?
This week in math we continued
working in Unit 3 which focuses on addition
and subtraction of whole numbers and
decimals. We reviewed and practiced addition
and subtraction strategies using larger
numbers, including decimals. We also were
reminded of strategies to use when solving
word problems involving place value.
We continued working with our Unit
of Inquiry, titled Civil Struggles. The central
idea of this planner is that societies have civil
conflicts due to differences. Inquiry this week
focused on the Civil War in the United States.
Students imagined that they were Union
soldiers in Gettysburg as they visited different
stations around the room to learn about life as
a soldier during that time. Next week, we will
look at different conflicts of the past and
present time.
Students continued literacy rotations
this week and focused on journaling and their
book club assignment. We will resume our
regular spelling schedule next week.
We also continued answering our
science questions of the day. This week’s
questions focused on our human body. We
also met with our first grade buddies this
week.

DRUMMING EXCHANGE
Drumming Exchange at Sheridan Elementary All 5th graders participated in a
drumming exchange with students
from Sheridan Elementary School on
Monday. Students had the chance to
make a connection with a buddy and
visit their school. During the day, they
also shared and practiced their
drumming. We had a great time
meeting new friends and making
connections! We thank Mrs. Farinella
for setting up this wonderful
opportunity.
