BALL VALVES

GENERIC

LIQUID AMMONIA & LIQUID PETROLEUM GAS SERVICE

SCOPE
This spec covers the special requirements of valves for LIQUID AMMONIA and LIQUID PETROLEUM GAS service.

PREPARATION
All valve components shall be degreased and cleaned as required for CLEAN VALVES.

SPECIFICATIONS
BODY & END CONNECTION
• Carbon Steel - suitable for service temperatures ambient to -20oF.
• Low temperature Carbon Steel - suitable for service temperatures -20oF to -50oF.
• Stainless Steel - suitable for service temperatures minus 50oF and below.
• It is recommended to give additional corrosive protection to the surfaces exposed to the media, when carbon steel is used. Spraying, dipping
or painting with ‘Wateriation DM Oil’ or ‘Molykote Q5-7409 bonded lubricant’ can provide effective protection.
BALL - Stainless steel with pressure relief hole (when assembled in valve hole should face high pressure side).
STEM ASSEMBLY - All valve sizes up to and including 2” (50mm).
SEATS AND BODY SEALS - According to pressure/ temperature rating.

LUBRICANTS
• The only lubricants that may be used are those made up of PTFE or PCTFE and should be used sparingly.
• Molybdenus disulphide anti-scruffing compound such as ‘Molykote Dry-Friction Film’ or ‘Rocol’ can be used on insert (plug) threads and bolting
but not on stem threads. Curing time must be allowed to ensure no trace can be transferred to other components upon assembly.

PROCEDURES
• Prior to degreasing valve components a hydrostatic shell test shall be made of the ‘Valve Shell’ without the ball and seats and using a dummy
stem assembly. The valve ends must be capped or plugged.
• The hydrostatic pressure applied to the valve shall be 1.5 times the maximum rated pressure of the valve for the specified time listed in Table
A.
• The test equipment must not subject the valve to externally applied stresses which may affect the results of the test.
• Valve assembly should take place with minimum time delay after degreasing all the valve components.
• Assembly should be made in a CLEAN AREA.
• The completely assembled valve should then undergo the pneumatic seat ring test.
• The valve is UNI-DIRECTIONAL (resulting from the hole in the ball at the high pressure end of the valve). A clear and indelible SS tag will
indicate the direction of flow through the valve.

TEST
• GREASE FREE NITROGEN at a pressure equal to 1.1 times the maximum rated pressure shall be applied to the down stream end of the
valve for a minimum of 15 seconds.
• Leakage should be detected by completely immersing the valve in de-ionized water or covering the exposed ball with de-ionized water.
• There shall be no visible leakage during the test time.
• At the conclusion of the test all traces of the test fluid must be eliminated.

PACKAGING AND LABELING

• Upon satisfactory test and drying, the valve shall be capped, labeled and placed into a clean polythene bag.
• A label stating ‘Prepared for Liquid Ammonia Service’ or ‘Liquid Petroleum Gas Service’ and ‘Remove before operating or putting into service’
shall be attached to the valve.
• The bag is then sealed for dispatch.
