The technology of GNSS receivers: Fundamentals

Prof. Letizia Lo Presti
Politecnico di Torino

A Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) consists of a constellation of satellite, whose

payloads are especially designed to provide positioning of objects with global coverage. It
implements the trilateration method, which uses the geometry of triangles to determine the relative
positions of objects with respect to some reference points, located at known positions. In GNSSs the
reference points are the satellites, and the objects are located at the Earth surface or fly around the
globe.
Each satellite broadcasts a signal that contains the position of the satellite and the precise time the
signal was transmitted. The position of the satellite and the timing information is transmitted in a
data message by adopting the CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) technique. The receiver
implements the trilateration method by measuring the time-of-flight from the satellites. Several such
measurements can be made at the same time from different satellites, allowing a continual fix to be
generated in real time.
In this lecture some selected topics from the GNSS field will be presented with the aim of giving
the basic principles to understand how a receiver (possibly a very simple handset) can implement
the trilateration method to fix its position. In particular the following subjects will be covered:
• the structure of the transmitted signal,
• the scheme of the receiver,
• fundamentals on the acquisition algorithms,
• simulation techniques.
In the afternoon some exercises on these topics will be proposed to students.

Practical Lecture on GNSS Data Processing: Laboratory Exercises

Jaume Sanz
Research Group of Astronomy and Geomatics,
Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (gAGE/UPC), Barcelona, Spain

This practical lecture is focused on the instrumental use of the concepts and techniques involved in GNSS
navigation and applications, and it is aimed to provide an experiential learning on the GNSS data processing
through a set of selected examples. This seminar content is addressed to graduate students, PhD. Candidates
and professional in general willing to broaden their GNSS knowledge with a practical training.
The GNSS Signal-In-Space, measurements and user positioning are analyzed in a guided laboratory session.
The exercises are developed on a computer with actual GPS data, using the ESA/UPC GNSS-Lab Tool suit
(gLAB); which is an interactive multipurpose, educational and professional, package to process and analyze
GNSS data.
The lecture is organized through guided exercises where the student analyzes the GNSS performances from
Signal-In-Space to position domain.
A first set of introductory exercises is devoted to the single frequency Standard Point Positioning (SPP)
study, using GPS broadcast orbits and clocks. The different components of the measurements modelling are
analysed in the range domain and position domain with gLAB, being their impact assessed in terms of user
accuracy. The data set used for this study were collected on 2000 may 2nd, when the GPS Selective
Availability was switched off; which allows to compare effect of the models components in both scenarios,
with S/A=on and off. Background information slides are provided summarizing the models associated with
these exercises.
This exploratory analysis is carrier out in a very easy and friendly way using the gLAB suite tool, where the
different model components (up to high accuracy positioning) can be set or unset in an interactive panel of
the gLAB Graphic User Interface (GUI). An additional target of these exercises is to train the student in the
gLAB handling for the further exercises to perform in this laboratory session.
These introductory exercises are completed with the Precise Point Positioning (PPP). Here dual frequency
receivers and IGS precise orbits and clock products are used to achieve centimetre level accuracy in static
mode, when applying the full modelling capabilities of gLAB.
After studding the GNSS model components for positioning, a Laboratory Work Project (LWP) is proposed
to the student. The target is to cinematically position a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite, orbiting at about 450
km of altitude on the Earth. In this exercise the student has to discus which model components must be
applied and which positioning strategy is more suitable to cinematically estimate the satellite orbit. A series
of non-trivial questions are raised during the LWP, and the correct answers are provided to the student in
order to allow a comparison with the recently acquired knowledge and reasoning skills.
For those students that already have a solid background on GPS data processing there are a series of
additional exercises to carry out during the lab session, or later as homework. Those exercises will allow
them to deep into gLAB capabilities as a professional GPS data processing tool.
A USB stick with the gLAB Tool Suit software and the additional tools used in this laboratory session will
be provided to each attendant.

Location based Services using the simulator environment of Android by Google

François Spies and Dominique Dhoutaut
University of Franche-Comté (France)

In this lecture we are going to use Eclipse (http://www.eclipse.org) and the android plugin
(http://www.android.com) to develop an Android application using the Java language.

The objective is to trace a smartphone on the road using its GNSS device (GPS) from another
smartphone. At the beginning of the practice students will get the first part of the application which
includes the source code of the tracked smartphone and the visualization map of the monitoring
smartphone.

The first work will be to add source code on the monitoring smartphone in order to visualise the
positions of the 2 smartphones.

The second work will be to use the simulator environment to test the application generating virtual
movements.

The third work will be to play back GPS traces recorded on the road into the simulator in order to
test nearly real situations.
