Class # 2286 WRIT 503 001 The Art of Creative Writing 10/5/2010 - 12/7/2010
T 6:00PM - 9:00PM 37 S. Wabash-Alice Sharp Bldg. Rm: 711 John Rich
When the ancient Romans claimed: VERBA VOLANT, SCRIPTA MANENT (Words Fly Away, Text Remains) they named one of the most essential
means with which humans have sought immortality-- through leaving a story, a poem, or a play, behind. The history of literature teaches us that the
human story is relentlessly human whether it is 2,000 years old or newborn. To enter the field of creative writing is to reach forward and backward into
the voices of the human journey; bitter, ecstatic, poignant and, at times, hilarious. You propose to offer a new voice to the annals of time. You have a
dream, a desire and maybe, you're hungry to take a risk. This course will ask you to write in different poetic, non-fictional, and fictional forms, guided by
reading outstanding practitioners of these literary forms, such as Sharon Olds, Mary Oliver, Malcolm Gladwel, Pico Iyer, Flannery O'Connor and Ray
Carver. For more detailed course information contact us at CS@SAIC.edu
