Flu vaccines available Wednesdays, Thursdays
Through the end of the year, flu vaccines
will be given from 9 to 11 a.m. every
Wednesday beginning Nov. 17 at the Port
Hueneme Commissary and every Thurs-
day, except Thanksgiving, beginning Nov.
18 at the Point Mugu Navy Exchange.
Naval Branch Health Clinic Port Hue-
neme will be administering the flu vaccine,
which is a one-dose combination of sea-
sonal influenza and H1N1 virus strains.

Three Zero (VX-30) is receiving the air-
craft from Fleet Readiness Center South
East, Jacksonville, Fla., where the painting
was done by their maintenance team.
Many commands throughout the Navy
are picking historical paint schemes that
represent different time periods or spe-
cific battles in our history. The one VX-30
chose is representative of the Battle of
Midway.
“This paint scheme is a great way to
celebrate 100 years of Naval aviation,” said
Cmdr. John Rousseau, commanding of-
ficer of VX-30. “The Battle of Midway
was one of the most important battles in
our history and a turning point in the
battle of the Pacific. It was the first naval
engagement fought entirely with aircraft
and is symbolic of the tenacity, flexibility,
and sacrifice that Naval aviation embod-
ies.”

Marriage was life-changing for me. I
was over 40 when I first married my
Sailor. While very independent — OK,
and bull-headed — I took to marriage
like a fish to water. I loved sharing my
life with Scott. I loved partnering with
him on everything — meal-planning,
budget, home decoration, travel, recre-
ation, you name it. I discovered new
aspects of “me” and found life commit-
ted to another brought out a part of me
that was missing. I was fulfilled. Obvi-
ously I met, dated and married my hus-
band on shore duty.
Three months into our marriage, we
moved from Norfolk to San Diego, and
Scott reported to a ship for sea duty.
Less than two weeks later Scott was
gone, on his first 30-day underway.
Oh, and I should mention that as I
drove home from dropping him off at
the ship there was black smoke and ash

mythical “strong Navy wife.”

marriage Scott was gone a total of 14
months. I experienced the San Diego
fires of 2003 and was robbed three times
in nine months, finally necessitating
relocation. I moved 3 times: after the
robbery into temporary housing, then
to a slightly more permanent situation,
finally 1,300 miles away in anticipation
of the ship’s return from deployment
and homeport change. I made new
friends and developed my “own” rela-
tionship with his family.
Through those 18 months and the
challenges they presented, I changed. I
found my “sea legs.” I discovered re-
sources, I gained confidence and
strength. All good things, right? I was
growing as a person. One problem: This
growth took place in the absence of my
husband. He wasn’t there to see it, ex-
perience it, contribute to it or share in
it.
The woman Scott kissed goodbye that
first underway is not the woman he
kissed at homecoming. I didn’t realize
it. Nor did I realize how much Scott had
changed.
Scott is just like your service member.
He has a job to do. He is proud of his
service to our country and throws him-
self into his job.
My husband grew and changed dur-
ing those 18 months as well. He was
challenged by a new ship, new crew, new
mission, new position. His skills were
challenged and honed; his leadership
skills were developed, challenged then
developed more. He learned to live on
four to six hours of sleep.
I will never be able to fully appreciate
or relate to you the experience of our
Sailors during work-ups, underways and
deployments.
The reality is their lives are as differ-
ent from ours as we can possibly imag-
ine. That changes them as well. And that
doesn’t begin to touch the stress and
impact of battle on our service mem-
bers.
The man I kissed on the pier before
that first underway is not the man I
kissed at homecoming.
It’s important to lay this basic founda-
tion of understanding before we can
talk about return and reunion and learn
tools to successfully navigate the often
choppy seas of reintegration.

and hurdles of reintegration and the
new marriage that can emerge.

On average, military families move every
2.9 years. For a military-connected stu-
dent, that equals about nine different
schools between kindergarten and high
school graduation. With so many moves
and so many schools, military families
spend a great deal of time researching the
schools their children will be attending.

retrieve a student´s educational and extra-

observed on the 11th day of the 11th
month? I found some intriguing informa-
tion at the following website that may

World War I, known at the time as “The
Great War,” officially ended when the
Treaty of Versailles was signed on June
28, 1919, in the Palace of Versailles outside
the town of Versailles, France. However,
fighting ceased seven months earlier when
an armistice, or temporary cessation of
hostilities, between the Allied nations and
Germany went into effect on the 11th hour
of the 11th day of the 11th month. For
that reason, Nov. 11, 1918, is generally
regarded as the end of “the war to end all
wars.”
In November 1919, President Woodrow
Wilson proclaimed Nov. 11 as the first
commemoration of Armistice Day. Armi-

will have special hours during the upcom-
ing holidays.
• Veterans Day: The office is closed
Thursday, Nov. 11, for Veterans Day.
• Thanksgiving: The office will close at
noon on Wednesday, Nov. 24, and remain
closed Nov. 25 and Nov. 26.
• Winter holidays: The office will close
at noon on Dec. 23 and Dec. 30. It will be
closed all day on Christmas Eve, Dec. 24,

and the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance
(VITA) Program needs your help!
VITA is an all-volunteer program ded-
icated to assisting active duty service mem-
bers, military dependents and retirees
prepare their 2010 federal and state in-
come tax returns for free.
Without VITA volunteers, service mem-
bers and their families must either prepare
their taxes themselves or pay $100 or more
to a tax return preparer.
Last year the volunteers at Naval Base
Ventura County completed more than
2,400 federal and state tax returns, yield-

More than 5,000 visit Haunted Swamp
Numbers double over ’09
More than 5,000 people – twice as many as
last year -- shared screams and shivers over the
three-night scarefest that was the Haunted
Swamp at Naval Base Ventura County (NBVC),
Port Hueneme.
“We were extremely pleased with the turnout
from the public in support of our NBVC troops
and families,” said Dan Alpern, marketing di-
rector of Morale, Welfare and Recreation,
which put on the event at the Aquatics Cen-
ter.
The Haunted Swamp opened Thursday, Oct.
28, for military families only. About 650 people
attended that first evening. The next two nights
were open to the public, with 1,980 showing
up on Friday and 2,674 on Saturday.
Visitors boarded a boat in the pool that was
pulled through a fog-filled camouflage tunnel
by divers from Underwater Construction Team
2. Then they disembarked and walked through
a dripping cave, past zombies and ghouls and

down their scary behavior; after dark, the fear
factor intensified.
Four-year-old Natalie Gonzalez was one of
the first to arrive at the swamp, with 8-year-old
sister Isabella and mom Jolene in tow. Their
dad, Hospital Corpsman 1st Class David Gon-
zalez, is with Naval Mobile Construction Bat-
talion 4.
Natalie and Isabella both liked the boat ride,
with Natalie poking fun at Isabella’s case of
nerves.
“She’s scared of ghosts,” she said of her
older sister. “She’s scared of everything that
has a scary face.”
Two-year-old Savannah Connolly was less
frightened than curious. Her mother, Andrea,
whose husband, Randall, is also a hospital
corpsman 1st class with NMCB 4, had to ex-
plain that, yes, this was the pool where the
family goes swimming, but it had been deco-
rated for Halloween.
Savannah wasn’t having any of that. When
the boat ride ended, she clambered onto the
concrete and pulled off her shirt, ready to go
swimming.

Loaded Baked Potato Soup, a recipe
created by one Naval Base Ventura Coun-
ty culinary specialist and prepared by
another, took the People’s Choice Award
at a recent cooking competition in Ox-
nard.
The soup was so popular, in fact, that
the owner of the restaurant where the
event was held is negotiating for the reci-
pe.

Class Joshua Hoover, who prepared the
soup recipe.
There were three side dishes in addition
to the soup, seven entrees in addition to
the Autumn Chicken, and three desserts.
Culinary Specialist 2nd Class Joe Rub-
alicado had planned to enter the dessert
competition, but his cake fell apart that
morning in the kitchen and he was forced
to withdraw. He came to the event anyway,
“I have four boys,” he explained. “If it
passes them, I know it’s OK. They’re my
toughest critics.”
Dishes were judged on appearance, fla-
vor, execution, presentation and original-
ity. The three judges were owners of local
restaurants and catering businesses.
Even though Hoover actually won the
People’s Choice Award, he was quick to
credit Goodloe.
“I’m still learning,” Hoover said.

The annual event, called Men Can
Cook, took place Saturday, Oct. 23, at
Casa Lopez in Oxnard. It was sponsored
by the Xi Kappa Omega chapter of the
Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, which works
to help African-American families and
further the education of African-Ameri-
can women in Ventura County.
Fifteen men competed this year, includ-
ing Culinary Specialist 3rd Class Abram
Goodloe, who created the soup recipe but

2007, and in 2006, he won for his carrot
cake.

doesn’t measure ingredients.
“I just eyeball it,” he said. “It’s got ba-
con, celery, onion, green onions, potato
cubes, cheese and sour cream.”

Goodloe’s entry, Autumn Chicken, con-
sisted of a pounded chicken breast with
a mango and cranberry sauce, topped with
thyme and rosemary. He came up with it
for Thanksgiving several years ago.
Alas, it lost to a chili, but he took it in
stride. “I’m just happy we were able to do
this,” he said. “It’s a huge feather in our
cap.”

The galley at Naval Base Ventura Coun-
ty, Port Hueneme, is gearing up for a busy
day – even before Thanksgiving.
On Monday, Nov. 15, a team of judges
will be inspecting and tasting to see if
NBVC Port Hueneme deserves the coveted
Captain Edward F. Ney Memorial Award
for Outstanding Food Service.
The competition is down to Port Hue-
neme and Naval Air Station Whidbey
Island in Washington, so even if Whidbey
is declared the winner, Port Hueneme
would win second place, albeit unhappi-
ly.
“That’s not even an option,” said Lt.
(j.g.) James Jones, who oversees the gal-
ley.
Equally as determined to win is Senior
Chief Culinary Specialist Cesar Cabotage.
He wants the Ney Award to be his swan
song – he retires in five months.
“I think we have a good chance,” said
Cabotage, who actually checked out the
competition when he recently visited rela-
tives in Washington.

rameters for calories and fat content, but
we can change it up for a different ap-
pearance, taste and color,” Cabotage
said. “You can really improve it and
make it more appetizing.”

Chris Alaniz, a 15-year-old soph-
omore at Oxnard High School and
a member of the Air Force Junior
ROTC, wasn’t looking comfortable.
He’d just pulled a giant lever on a
portable substation at Naval Base
Ventura County (NBVC), and the
resulting bang had startled him and
his classmates.
Now he was wondering if he’d
done the right thing, even though a
Seabee had asked him to do it.
The Seabee, Construction Me-
chanic 1st Class Leslie Walton,
chuckled.
“No, you didn’t break it,” he reas-
sured Chris, who immediately looked
much better after hearing that the
spring operation creates a bang when

the Mobile Utilities Support Equip-

the students got to see, touch and
climb into and around the massive
substations, generators and radiators
that have been called into service all
over the world, from the wreckage
of Hurricane Katrina to primitive
hospitals abroad and damaged ships
at sea.
They also learned what it takes to
operate this equipment — two years
of training at a minimum.
Learning about possible careers in
the military and the schooling re-
quired for those jobs was one of the
key reasons for the tour, said Dale
Weaver, a retired Air Force major
and head of the Junior ROTC pro-
gram at Oxnard High.
In addition to MUSE, the students

ing about,” he said. “We got to see a
lot of things close-up.”
Oxnard High School’s Junior
ROTC program is one of two in Ven-
tura County. The other is a Navy
program at Hueneme High School.
The Oxnard program is growing,
Weaver said. It had 71 students last
year and is up to 104 this year.

Football flyover treat for VAW-117

On Saturday, Oct. 16, the Wallbangers of
VAW-117 participated in a flyover at College
Station Texas for the Texas A&M vs. Uni-
versity of Missouri football game.
Members of the aircrew included the
Wallbangers’ commanding officer, Cmdr.
Brent Trickel, who is an alumnus of Missouri
(Class of ‘93), as well as two Texas A&M
alumni, Lt. Cmdr. Shane “FUTA” Tanner
(Class of ‘97) and Lt. Cmdr. Jason “Chubbs”
Fox (Class of ‘99). Accompanying them
were co-pilot, Lt. Tim “Grinch” Kautz and
Naval Flight Officer, Lt. (j.g.) Ryan “Ryu”
Riouff.
The flyover was part of the Texas A&M
pregame, or “Spirit Walk,” in which the Ag-
gie Corps of Cadets and the Corps’ Fightin’
Texas Aggie band escort their football team
from the Texas A&M athletic center to Kyle
Field. The Spirit Walk is one of many great
traditions at the university and is essential-
ly a pregame parade and pep rally for the
football team and their fans.
The E-2C pilot, Fox, was able to time the
flyover perfectly to coincide with the unload-
ing of the football team by coordinating with

personnel on the ground. The entire event
was executed smoothly, and the fans on the
ground were able to enjoy the show.
Following the flyover, the aircrew returned
to Houston’s Ellington Field and promptly
made the two-hour drive back to College
Station, where they were invited by the Ag-
gies to watch the remainder of the football
game. During the third period intermission,
the Hawkeye aircrew and a crew from VX-9,
based out of NAWS China Lake, were
brought out onto the field’s 25-yard line
where they were individually introduced to
the 80,000 fans present at Kyle Field.
Once introductions were complete, the
aircrew remained on the sidelines with the
Aggie and Mizzou staff for the remainder
of the game. Afterwards, the aircrew took
pictures and met with fellow alumni present
at the game.
For Fox, this experience was literally a
dream come true. As an alumnus of Texas
A&M, he has always dreamed of being one
of the flyover pilots at Aggie football games.
Eleven years after graduating and receiving
his commission, he was finally able to suc-
cessfully accomplish this dream.

 4-time Olympian named fitness manager at Bee-Fit

A four-time Olympian in shot put has
been named the new fitness manager at
the Bee-Fit Health and Wellness Center,
Naval Base Ventura County, Port Huen-
eme.
Ramona Pagel, 48, finished ninth in
women’s shot put the 1996 Summer Olym-
pic Games in Atlanta and 11th in both
the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles and the
1992 Olympics in Barcelona. She also
competed in the 1998 Olympics in Seoul,
the only year she qualified for both shot
put and discus throw competitions.
In all, she has represented the United
States 20 times in major international
meets.
Pagel has also coached nationally and
internationally. In March, she was the
head women’s coach for the track and field
world championships in Doha, Qatar.
The Lighthouse
“Ramona comes to NBVC as the high-
est qualified and credentialed fitness man-
ager since I have worked at NBVC over
the past 17 years,” said NBVC Athletic
Director Fred Morgan. “Ramona will
provide a new level of professionalism to
the fitness program.”
So how does fitness play into the life-
style of an athlete so used to the highest
levels of competition?
“You can train hard, but you’ve got to
focus on fitness — stability, balance, small
muscle development, connective tissue
— to avoid injury,” she explained. “You
can’t always do the big things. Sometimes,
it’s all about the little things.”
Pagel is a firm believer in fitness as a
lifestyle, especially for those whose lives
are filled with stress.
“Whether you’re a dependent or active
duty, everyone is stressed,” she said. “Go-
ing to the fitness center is a great way to
alleviate that. It’s important to take care
of yourself.”

want them to enjoy not being stressed.”
Pagel wants to see more people taking
advantage of the Bee-Fit, which is open
to anyone with base access. Fees are on a
sliding scale, ranging from no cost for
military and dependents to $15 a month
for contractors. Personal trainers are also
available on a sliding scale, with contrac-
tors paying the most at $180 for 10 ses-
sions.

to add new classes at the Bee-Fit — ball-
room dancing has been suggested — and
she’ll help train Wounded Warriors for the
upcoming games in Colorado Springs.
NBVC was recently named the West Coast
training site for the Wounded Warriors,
and about 20 athletes are due in for the
first mini-camp scheduled to start Dec.
1.
Pagel has worked with disabled athletes
at the Endeavor Games, held each year at
the University of Central Oklahoma.
“Training’s the same,” she said. “You
just have to make some accommodations,
that’s all.”
Pagel is a Southern California native:
“That’s why the Los Angeles Olympic
Games were the most special,” she said.
“I drove to the Coliseum from my parents’
house. Walking into that coliseum when
I was from the United States, competing
for the United States — it gave me goose-

Pagel graduated from San Diego State
University in 1985 with a bachelor’s degree
in physical education, emphasizing in
sports medicine. She went on to earn her
master’s degree in athletic administration
from Kent State University in 1998 and
obtained her National Strength and Con-
ditioning Association, Certified Strength
and Conditioning Specialist credential in
2010.
“Her academic accomplishments are
outstanding,” Morgan said.
In addition to her academic pursuits,
Ramona has coached many world-class
athletes, such as local Adolfo Camarillo
High School standout and Olympic mar-
athoner Marla Runyon. She is also a mem-
ber of the Olympic Development Com-
mittee, Disabled Athletes and a
contributor to multiple publications.

The Seabees immediately started preparing
and training for the deployment upon return
from their previous EUCOM and AFRICOM
deployment in March.
Some of the training consisted of Counter
Improvised Explosive Device (CIED) training
for all hands and more than two months of
extensive CIED training for the Convoy Secu-
rity Element (CSE) teams. The CSE teams are
crucial to the success of the deployment, as they
will provide escort and security for all ground
transportation when the battalion arrives in
theater.

jandro Gonzales, the mission commander for
small projects for NMCB 3’s Detail 4, part of

“I had to explain to my 6-year-old son why
we had to go over there,” said Gonzales. “I told
him that I have to go over there so that others
can come home for a while.”

serving in Afghanistan.

Tangonan also came to the United
States in 2008 from the Philippines. He
and three of his four sisters were origi-
nally denied citizenship and lost more than
$1,500 in fees, according to Tangonan.
“We were told we could apply again but
we would still have to pay the fees again.
It was very frustrating,” he said. “So my-
self and three of my sisters all joined the

NMCB 3, which deployed this
month.
In fact, the Seabees with
NMCB 3 are taking the boxes
with them for delivery, saving the
Soroptimists thousands of dol-
lars in shipping costs.
“We’ve never done this as a
joint project with the military,
and it’s gone very well,” said Su-
sie Hafer, service chairman for
the Camarillo chapter. “We’re
planning on doing this next year
as well.”
She gave credit to Heather
Rose, whose husband, UT Beau
Rose, has been deployed since
June with the air detachment of
NMCB 40, for bringing in Navy
volunteers.
“I’m excited about this proj-
ect,” Rose said. “It makes sense
that we do it together.”
About 50 volunteers spent Fri-
day, Oct. 22, in the old Press-
Courier building in Oxnard pack-
ing up boxes and getting them
ready for shipment. Down the
long tables they went, picking up
items that had been donated
through the year — a T-shirt here,
a DVD there, a book or maga-
zine, toiletries, snacks, a holiday
decoration. Into each box also
went one of the 1,200 neck warm-
ers sewn by the volunteer orga-
nization Stitches of Love.
Everything was carefully
packed into a shipping box, then
it was off to the old newspaper
loading dock for taping and label-
ing. Boxes were then stacked into
a truck for shipment back to the
base, where they stayed until
NMCB 3 left.
The club originally scheduled
two days for the project, but so
many volunteers showed up they
figured they’d be done that day.
By noon, they’d already packed
528.
Hafer’s favorite item is sure to
bring smiles to the Seabees: rein-
deer antlers. They were in last
year’s boxes as well, and the So-
roptimists received a photo of
dozens of Seabees standing in
front of their foreign quarters
wearing them.
“We treasure that,” Hafer
said.

Turkey fryers banned on
base except in housing
The Naval Base Ventura
County Fire Department is is-
suing a reminder that except in
Navy housing, turkey fryers are
prohibited on Navy Region
Southwest government facili-
ties.
Experts recommend that
consumers who choose to fry
turkeys at home follow these
safety guidelines:
• Keep fryer in full view while
burner is on.
• Place fryer in an open area
away from all walls, fences or
other structures.
• Never use in, on or under
a garage, breezeway or any
structure that can catch fire.
• Make sure there is at least
2 feet of space between the
propane tank and fryer burn-
er.
• Center the pot over the
burner on the cooker.
• Check the oil temperature
frequently.
• If oil begins to smoke, im-
mediately turn gas supply off.
• Raise and lower food slow-
ly to reduce splatter and avoid
burns.
• Cover bare skin with well-
insulated potholders or oven
mitts when removing or adding
food.
• Completely thaw and dry
turkey before cooking. Par-
tially frozen and/or wet turkeys
can produce excessive hot oil
splatter when added to oil.
• Never let children or pets
near the fryer when in use.
• If a fire occurs, immedi-
ately call 9-1-1. Do not use
water on a grease fire. An all-
purpose fire extinguisher can
be used.
Baseball signups continue through Dec. 10
Sign-ups are under way for the 2011 season of
Naval Base Ventura County Junior Baseball.
Boys and girls ages 4 to 15, with a birth date
cutoff of April 30, can register for this Cal Rip-
ken/Babe Ruth League, the only one in West Ven-
tura County.
First-time players will need to bring a birth
certificate to verify age.
Cost ranges from $90 to $130, depending on
the division and whether the player is a military
dependent. Sibling discounts are available.
Sign-ups are from 6:30 to 9 p.m.
Talks set for Native American Indian Heritage Month
Two events are scheduled in upcoming weeks
to celebrate Native American Indian Heritage
Month.
On Tuesday, Nov. 23, a native drum and dance
exhibition by Soldier Creek and tribal dancers
will take place at the Naval Surface Warfare Cen-
ter Port Hueneme Division’s Building 1388, the
audiovisual center.
This presentation will also include a talk by
Desi Pete Zavalla (Crow Heart), of the Comanche
tribe. A teacher, storyteller, dancer and singer,
Zavalla works for the Los Padres National Forest
as the tribal relations program liaison.

Education and/or Experi-

technical skills. CPA or
MBA and public accounting
experience preferred. A spending accounts, paid
minimum of ten years post
graduate experience in a
business office setting with
at least five of those years
in a hospital setting using
the acquired skills from the
college or university educa-
tion and at least three of
those years in a managerial
position. (Note: An MBA
degree or certification as
CPA may shorten this expe-
rience requirement based
on an evaluation of experi-
ence and education accom-
