tion,” said Doss.
The Seabees immediately started preparing
and training for the deployment upon return
from their previous EUCOM and AFRICOM
deployment in March.
Some of the training consisted of Counter
Improvised Explosive Device (CIED) training
for all hands and more than two months of
extensive CIED training for the Convoy Secu-
rity Element (CSE) teams. The CSE teams are
crucial to the success of the deployment, as they
will provide escort and security for all ground
transportation when the battalion arrives in
theater.
According to Builder 1st Class (SCW) Ale-
jandro Gonzales, the mission commander for
small projects for NMCB 3’s Detail 4, part of
the deployment preparations included getting

to know the troops, brushing up on technical

information and completing arrangements for
administrative and logistical support for home
and the deployed Seabees.
It was a lot to juggle while still trying to spend
time with family.
“I had to explain to my 6-year-old son why
we had to go over there,” said Gonzales. “I told
him that I have to go over there so that others
can come home for a while.”
