CONTACTING YOUR FEDERAL REPRESENTATIVES

Although there are many ways to be heard, one of the most effective is the straight-forward
communication of your opinions to your elected representatives. A list of their addresses (telephone
numbers, fax numbers, emails if available, and snail mail addresses) is available -ALL of which are
good ways to contact them - but the more personal the better.

Letters and telephone calls--especially from voters in legislators’ own districts--really count.
Emails, according to legislative aides, are much less effective. These tips are designed to help you
make your point in the most effective manner, which includes being polite and respectful.

GENERAL TIPS:
• Be brief and to the point.
• Use specific facts and examples to illustrate your point.
Let them know how their votes affect constituents.
• If you're asked a question and don't know the answer, simply say so and offer to get back to them
(then do!).
• Don’t assume that legislators are as well-informed as you are. Explain the situation, tell them what
you think and ask them for their position on the issue.
• Letters or calls about a specific piece of legislation should include the bill number.

CALLING YOUR LEGISLATOR:

• Identify yourself to the person who answers the phone. Make sure you let them know that you are
a constituent in the legislator’s district.
• If the legislator is unavailable, give the staff member your message.
• Toll Free to Congressional offices in Washington DC – 800-965-4701 – ask for your
Congressperson or Senator.

WRITING LETTERS:
• Address your legislator as "Representative" or "Senator.”
• A one-page letter on a single topic is best. Be brief and specific.
• Be certain that your name and address are on the envelope and letter. Type or write legibly.
• Don't send form letters or postcards. They are not as effective as a well-written, personal letter.

IF the fax number at one office is busy it is okay to fax it to another!

IF the telephone number at one office is busy -try another - the staff at each of these offices
records the constituent's opinions on issues

Dear Senator / or Representative_________,

As we have entered our fifth year of this unprovoked war, and are currently spending
$4,000 every second1 (almost $250,000 a minute!) in Iraq - it is clear to the vast majority
of Americans that the time has come to bring our troops home!
<use nationalpriorities.org if you would like to find out what one hour, or one day of this war would fund in your town or
district>

Please do all you can to end this tragic war. . Our schools are deteriorating, bridges are
collapsing and New Orleans is still in shambles. Almost half of working Americans are un
- or under- insured and a "health care crisis" is still the number one cause of personal
bankruptcy in the USA.2 The state of healthcare for Veterans is a disaster. 22,500 Iraq
and Afghanistan vets with PTSD - a battle wound like any other - have been discharged
wrongly (often dishonorably) with the misdiagnosis of "personality disorder" so they
receive no benefits.3

The British Medical Journal Lancet4 has estimated (conservatively) that 973,000 Iraqis
have died (over half women and children, and over 95% civilian) and another 2 million are
refugees in neighboring countries with no rights or privileges and 2 million more are
internally displaced - homeless and hungry.

It is time to bring all the troops home now, not next year or the year after, but bring them
home starting today. Vote to get the U.S. “Out of Iraq Now – Stop Funding this War –
Fund Human Needs here. Please let me know what you will do. Thank you

Sincerely,
