TEXT BY VANESSA ABLE

Summer is by far the most exciting time to
visit Istanbul. The cafÈ scene moves out-
doors onto the terraces and up onto the
rooftops, and the Bosphorus nightclubs
open their doors for merrymaking under
the stars (see also p76). It is the season
too for festivals and concerts: Bjˆrk, The
Scorpions and JosÈ Padilla are all playing
in August, while fans of electronic music
will be ocking to the Global Gathering
on Seanergy Beach by the Black Sea.
Visitors to the city might want to check
out (or check into) the long-awaited
Four Seasons Bosphorus, which has just
opened, hot on the tail of the so-hip-it-hurts
W Hotel, both in the flourishing neigh-
bourhood of Beşiktaş. On the other side of
town, at the source of the Golden Horn in
the historic district of Ey¸p, another new-
comer is the impressive Santral Istanbul.
This former Ottoman power plant has
recently been converted into a technol-
ogy museum and contemporary art space
by the cityís Bilgi University, and is well
worth journeying out to.
If the notion of summer heat is too
oppressive you could postpone until
October, when thereís another wave of
festivals: film buffs pour into the cinemas
for Filmekimi, a festival of international
movies, while from 17 October onwards
the Akbank Jazz Festival features the likes
of dotty local ensemble Ayhan Sicimoğlu,
the Latin Allstars and international legend
Chick Corea.
