Declaration on 20th Anniversary of “8888 Historical Event”

August 8, 2008.

“8888 Historical Event” could have precipitated the collapse of “One-party Militarism” in Burma. To
perpetuate our endeavor to uproot “Dictatorial Militarism”, the roadblock to democratic movements in
Burma, we celebrate 20thAnniversary of “8888 Historical Event”. But, no headway for our “National
Goal for Democracy” has yet been materialized, so far.

-The Solidarity of National Liberation Groups and Pro-democracy Political Groups

-The advantage of the landslide victory of National League for Democracy in the General
Election, held on May 27, 1990
-The significant emergence of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, our most beloved national leader, who
also won the love and respect of international community and the outstanding leadership
activities of absolutely prominent student-leaders such as Min Ko Naing
-The all-out national movements of well-established political parties including National League
for Democracy, Shan National League for Democracy and Association of Veteran Politicians.

All above-mentioned significant political occurrences are the concrete outcome of “8888 Historical
Events”. Since September 18, 1988 when Burmese Military Junta came into being by seizing the
political power, the magnanimous, glorious aims and objects of “8888 Historical Event” and favorable
political conditions of it were relentlessly suppressed, for putting the whole country under the military
rule legally, by holding “Constitutional Referendum”, without paying due respect and attention even to
the woebegone Nargis-Cyclone victims at that time.

Burmese Military Junta obdurately declined to negotiate with certain international groups, the United
Nations and National League for Democracy.

Under such political circumstances, the acquired good effects of “8888 Historical Event” should be well
guarded and should be firmly kept up. In that way only, “Burmese Military Junta”, this has been trying
to put Burma under “Dictatorial Military Rule “can be annihilated.

In accordance with the spirits of “8888 Historical Event”, we, 88 Generation Group of North Carolina,
the United States of America issued this declaration that the political power, grabbed from the populace
should be re-vested in them.
Long live “8888’s Generation Spirits”!
Dictatorial Militarism will surely fail!
Our Democracy Movements will triumph!
