filter/splitters – or a cable splitter if you’re installing Broadband Cable. Of
course, the CD includes detailed instructions for doing so. To make things
easy, we’ve also printed all the steps on the following pages. If your modem
or outlets are in another room , please watch the steps on the CD any way,

These scams are usually a way of gathering confidential information from
unwary web users. BigPond never asks members to email us their personal
details, or click through to a website to confirm any of their account details.

Hackers
Hackers try to use their computer skills and special sof tware to gain
unauthorised access to your computer. If they do get past your security
systems, they can do whatever they like. This can include stealing files,
personal information and financial records, gaining access to your BigPond
service, or simply destroying your computer. The ef fects can be devastating,
time-consuming and expensive.

Our recommendation is that you never reply to spam, even if the message
offers you an opt-out link. Feedback simply lets the spammer know that your
address is valid, so they will continue sending you their junk and selling
your address to others.

Worms and other viruses

Viruses are software applications that ‘infect’ computers. They can be
written to perform almost any function once they’ve gained access to your
system. Worms are viruses that spread themselves across a network. They’re
very common as email-borne viruses.

Once installed, a worm can steal addresses from your contacts lists and
spread itself to your friends’ and colleagues’ computers. Along with the
inconvenience and embarrassment, all those emails can generate high levels
of excess usage on your account.

Trojans and ‘ spy ware ’

A trojan is a piece of sof t ware that usually hides within a legitimate looking

20
application or utility to gain entr y into your computer system. Once you
install the host sof tware, the trojan can launch itself and go to work .

Trojans might do any of the things that a human hacker would – or they
may simply provide a hacker with a means of easy access . Spy ware is
similar to a trojan , although usually less damaging. It will install itself o n
your system and send rep or ts o n your co mputer ac tivit y back to its host .

Either kind of infection has the potential to generate huge levels of excess
usage on your BigPond account , either by uploading your data to the
thieves or by using your computer as a ser ver for ongoing illegal activit y.

Close any unused open ports

Ports are numbers that your computer’s operating system (Microsoft ®
Windows XP, Mac OS X , etc) uses to ‘address’ its communications with external
services. Your web browser will be assigned a port for internet traffic, and
your email software will have its own port for sending and receiving messages.

22
Ports are usually left open by default. And hackers can use the open port
numbers as a way to gain access to your computer. Once again, the answer is
firewall software. A firewall should block the majority of your computer’s
open ports automatically – but you should check the software documentation
to make absolutely sure that you are being protected.

Glossar y
Rela x . You don’t need a language degree to use the internet.
ADSL: ADSL stands for Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line – a broadband
ser vice (Digital) that’s carried on normal copper phone wires (Subscriber
Lines). It uses a higher frequenc y spec trum than voice traf fic , which is why it
doesn’t inter fere with your phone calls even though they share the same line.
Why ‘Asymmetric’ ? Because it’s configured so that downloads will go faster
than uploads, to optimise most people’s web usage.

bandwidth: Bandwidth is just data capacit y. Broadband ser vices can carr y
huge amounts of data. Low bandwidth or ‘narrowband’ ser vices, like dial-up,
carr y far less. Bandwidth is usually expressed in terms of data f low – 256kbps
or 512kbps for example – because it translates into speed when you’re sur fing
the internet .

bits per second: Most ISPs, including BigPond , rate broadband plan
speeds in kilobits per second (e.g. 256/6 4kbps, 512/128 kbps). However most
sof t ware, including Internet Explorer and Windows, displays download speeds
in kiloBY TES per second (kBps). One by te equals eight bits, so t ypical plan
speeds ‘translate’ as:

Plan Speed Kilobits Kilobytes

per second (kbps) per second (kbps)
256 32

512 64

1500 187

by tes: By tes are a common unit of computer data measurement , although the
base unit is ac tually a ‘bit’. Each ‘bit’ (shor t for ‘Binar y Digit’) is literally a 1 or a
0 in the binar y code that makes computing possible. And there are 8 bits in a
by te. A kiloby te is generally taken to be 1,000 by tes and a megaby te is generally
taken to be a million by tes. (Because of the binar y code, all computing is based
on the 2 times tables – so they’re ac tually 1,024 and 1,048 , 56 respec tively.)

broadband: ‘Broadband’ is ac tually just an umbrella term for high

bandwidth internet ser vices. (See ‘bandwidth’.) BigPond Broadband ser vices
include ADSL , Cable, Wireless and Satellite internet .

cable: Cable is a type of broadband service. It delivers internet data over the
network of pay-TV cables that Telstra laid in metropolitan areas. These cables have

77
a huge data capacity, and can deliver incredible internet speeds. However, the
cable must be physically present at your address before you can connect to it.

dial-up: Originally, the internet was available over telephone lines. To

access the web, your computer made phone calls, just like the rest of us. It
literally dialed our modem’s number. Our modem then dialed another modem
… and so on.

download: Downloads are data that you pull ‘down’ from the internet into
your computer. That data could be any thing from a web page to an email to a
streaming video file.

ethernet: Ethernet is a ver y common local area net work (LAN) technology.
In other words, it’s a way of connec ting computers
and computer equipment . ‘ Wired’ Ethernet
connec tions usually use ‘R J45’ t ype connec tors like
the one illustrated right .

FAQ: ‘Frequently Asked Questions’, FAQs are usually the hear t of any internet
or computer information direc tor y. You’ll find ver y useful FAQs on your BigPond
Installation CD, on page 42 of this Guide and , the best of them all , at our Online
Help Centre at w w w.bigpond.com.

filter: ADSL filters (or filter/splitters) are designed to stop the highfrequenc y
ADSL signals and low frequenc y telephony signals inter fering with each other.
(See the ADSL definition above.) Ever y telephone device that shares a phone
line with an ADSL modem must be connec ted via a filter, ef fec tively isolating
the modem.

firewall: A Firewall is an application that places a vir tual securit y fence

around your computer. As long as it’s kept up to date and ac tive, a firewall can
stop hackers from accessing your computer, stop trojans from sending data out
of your computer, and provide you with a repor t on any such ac tivit y. You’ll find
more info in the Securit y sec tion of this Guide.

modem: Your modem is a device that translates (or modulates) computer data
into a form that can be transmitted over the internet , and then ‘untranslates’
(demodulates) any data being sent to your computer. ‘Modem’ is ac tually shor t
for Modulator/DeModulator.

78
splitter: A splitter is a special filter that separates your internet signal from
your phone (ADSL) or pay-T V (Cable) signals. A central splitter is an even more
advanced filter that’s needed when you have several outlets on the same line
(or Cable) as your BigPond Broadband ser vice.

upload: An upload is any data that goes from your computer ‘up’ to the
internet . Usually that means emails that you send. Although , ever y time you
click a button or a link on a web page, or enter charac ters into a tex t field , your
computer uploads a small amount of data.

usage: Your internet usage is the total amount of data that you download and
upload. (Please see the ‘download’ and ‘upload’ definitions above.)

USB: USB stands for ‘universal serial bus’ and is a system that lets you plug a
huge range of devices (hence ‘universal’) into the one
plug (that’s the ‘serial bus’ par t) on your computer.
USB connec tors are usually f lat , although there is a
square model out there as well.

virus: A virus is any application that ‘infec ts’ your computer without you
knowing – including worm and trojan viruses. There are no good viruses. Even
‘harmless’ viruses clog up and slow our net work . Others can steal from you or
destroy the personal data on your computer. To find out more, see the Securit y
sec tion of this Guide.

Wi-Fi: BigPond Broadband with Home Wi-Fi sets your BigPond Broadband Cable
or ADSL ser vice free by getting rid of the wires that tie you to a modem. The
modem is still wired to a phone or cable outlet , but you can access the web from
any room you want – and connect several PCs if you like.

Wireless: BigPond Wireless Broadband uses par ts of existing mobile

telephone transmission net works to access the internet . So, unlike ADSL or
Cable, there is no physical landline connec ting your modem and our ser vers
(although you will need a power point connec tion if you are using a BigPond
Wireless Modem). Available as a mains-powered modem option or a laptop
mobile card option , wireless broadband combines high speed internet access
with incredible freedom. Visit w w w.bigpond.com to check if wireless broadband
is available in your area.
