Lean Six Sigma

A rigorous, focused and highly cost-effective approach to achieve improved business

performance. Lean is a discipline that focuses on process speed and efficiency.

The Essence of Lean Six Sigma

Lean and Six Sigma originated separately but are very much complementary once
put into practice. Lean focuses on improving the time it takes to complete tasks by
removing the ‘waste’ (unnecessary steps), while Six Sigma focuses on efficiency –
doing it right first time every time. Thus if staff are able to do tasks faster, they are in
turn doing them right first time every time. As a result, they are able to do tasks
faster as there is no re-work.

The Lean Six Sigma Impact

Lean Six Sigma is one of the most widely used quality improvement methods available
today. Organisations across all industries and fields have successfully adopted
this methodology to transform business performance. Some of Australia’s largest
organisations such as Westpac, 3M Australia, Vodafone, Qantas, NAB, CBA and BHP
Billiton use Lean Six Sigma.
Typical outcomes of Lean Six Sigma projects are:
• Improved business processes • Reduced waste and downtime
• Improved efficiency and cycle time • Improved revenue and margins
• Improved customer experience and sales

Implementing Lean Six Sigma

The success of a Lean Six Sigma project hinges on the support from management,
the cohesiveness of the project team representing different business areas in
the process, and most importantly stakeholder and change management of
those involved in and affected by the problem process to realise the benefits.
