The Editor,

Trivandrum
th
Sub: Failure to cover the Launch of the Technocity project on June 4 , 2010

Sir,
The Trivandrum Development Front (TDF) is a not-for-profit organization, composed mainly of
young professionals, which works for the overall development of Trivandrum. TDF has been
working with the Government to foster and facilitate various developmental projects in Trivandrum
for the last eight years.

We would like to convey our deep disappointment at the failure of your organisation to provide
proper coverage to the launch of Kerala’s biggest Information Technology infrastructure
th
project, Technocity, held at Trivandrum on June 4 , 2010.

As you are well aware, Technocity is a project of the Government of Kerala which will be
developed in a Public Private Partnership model in a time-bound manner with utmost
transparency. Spread over 451 acres of land, it is, by far, the largest IT/ITES infrastructure project
in Kerala and one of the biggest in India. It is estimated that between 10 and 15 million (1 to 1.5
Crores) square feet of business space will be developed at Technocity resulting in the creation
of between 1 to 2 Lakh direct employment opportunities and up to 4 lakh indirect employment
opportunities.

The project will bring in an investment of Rs 6000 Crores, where the Government has already
spent Rs 330 Crores on land acquisition alone.

A project of this magnitude which can provide jobs to tens of thousands of Kerala’s young people
and will act as a mainstay of the State’s economy, perhaps more than any other, with the
exception perhaps of the Vizhinjam deep-sea port and transshipment terminal.

TDF believes that the media play a vital role in building public awareness and support for such
projects. Kerala’s media should respect the aspirations of the State’s youth, who seek
employment in these projects and should support the Government in developing our State.

Despite this and the fact that every media organisation in Kerala, including yours, was adequately
represented at the launch event, the coverage given has either been insignificant or absent
altogether which does not befit the occasion. In contrast, extensive coverage has often been
given to similar events involving private IT parks all of which are much smaller than Technocity,
and all of which have latter come to naught, exposing the lack of commitment of the respective
promoters.
th
Moreover, the Government allotted land to India’s 4 largest IT Company, the Rs 12,000 Crore
HCL Technologies at Technopark, during this same event. This has also not received any
coverage despite the fact this is the most significant entry of a company into Kerala since the
arrival of Infosys, TCS and Wipro.

We hope that your organisation will give better coverage to development activities in the future
and meet its commitment to its audience to give due importance to socially relevant news items.

Trivandrum Thanking you, Ramkumar Rajan
