A control valve positioner lies at the heart of
most accurate and efficient control systems,
by ensuring the valve responds to the
commands of the control device and adopts
a position which is precise.
Conventionally, this valve positioning has
been achieved through the use of positioners
employing a mechanical balanced force
principle - a concept which has served industry
well. However, new technology brings new
opportunities and with it greater benefits.
The SP1 electronic smart positioner from
Spirax Sarco harnesses the latest design and
manufacturing techniques, specifically to:

Reduced cost of ownership
Zero air consumption. The SP1 consumes no
air when the valve is stationary, and typically
less than 0.02 kg / h during operation
- making real savings in running costs.
Easy to commission. Commissioning of the
SP1 is simple using the auto stroking routine
via the manual keypad or PC
- making the best use of valuable time.
Adaptive control mode. The SP1 can
continuously monitor the control valve
condition. Changes, perhaps in stem friction or
air pressure, are automatically compensated for
- giving longer service intervals.

Improved valve performance
Vibration and signal disturbances can effect
the accuracy of conventional positioners.
The sophisticated SP1, with miniature
moving element and digital feedback, will
surmount such problems. Combined with an
8 000 step resolution,
valve accuracy is assured at all times.
Increased process control
Historical data logging and on-line calibration,
using RS 232 or optional HART ® protocol
for centralised control, gives instant valve data
access without local inspection.
Powerful supporting software is available.

Typical specification
The positioner shall be Spirax Sarco SP1
electropneumatic with ¼" NPT air connections

and suitable for use with a maximum air inlet
pressure of 6 bar g. Electrical connections shall
Weight 4.3 kg be PG 13.5 with terminal board and accept an
input of 4 - 20 mA. The enclosure shall be made
of cast aluminium with anticorrosive paint and
comply with IP65 rating. A Spirax Sarco MPC2
coalescing filter regulator, with ¼" NPT air
connections and fixing kit, shall also be included.
