1 A student carries out an experiment to find out the relationship between mass, m,
and the oscillation period, T, of an inertia balance. A piece of jigsaw blade is clamped
at one end and a plasticine ball with mass 10.0g is fixed at the other end. The
distance from the plasticine ball to the clamp is 20.0cm. The arrangement of the
apparatus for the experiment is shown in Figure 1.1.
¦
The jigsaw blade is displaced horizontally to one side and then released so that it
oscillates. The time for 10 oscillations, t1, is taken using a stop watch. The jigsaw blade
is oscillated again to obtain the time for 10 oscillations, t2, for the second time. The
actual readings of t1 and t2 are shown in Figure 1.2.
The experiment is repeated by using plasticine balls with masses 20.0g, 30.0g, 40.0g,
and 50.0g. The readings of the stop watch are shown in Figures 1.3, 1.4, 1.5 and 1.6.
The period of oscillation, T, of the jigsaw blade is given by the following equation :
T = tmean

Where tmean = t1 + t2

3 Figure 1.5 shows a girl playing on two different swings. The swing in Figure 1.5(a) is
longer than the swing in Figure 1.5(b).
c) With the use of apparatus such as a simple pendulum, a digital stopwatch and others,
describe an experimental framework to test your hypothesis.
In your description, state clearly the following :
i) Aim of the experiment
ii) Variables in the experiment
iii) List of the apparatus and materials
iv) Arrangement of the apparatus
v) The procedure of the experiment, which include the method of controlling the
manipulated variable and the method of measuring the responding variable

4 The figure below shows a girl and her mother each sit on similar swings. If they are
given a push, it is found that the mother will be more difficult to be moved.
c) With the use of apparatus such as hacksaw blade, plasticine and other apparatus,
describe an experimental framework to test your hypothesis.
