1. A metallic bar 300 mm x 100 mm x 40 mm is subjected to a force of 5 KN (tensile ), 6 KN


(tensile ) and 4 KN ( tensile ) along x, y and z directions respectively. Determine the change
in the volume of the block. Take E=2 x 105 N/mm2 and Poission’s ratio = 0.25.
2. Draw the SFD and BMD for the beam loaded as shown in the figure.

3. A beam is simply supported and carries a uniformly distributed load of 40KN/m run over the
whole span. The section of the beam is rectangular having depth as 500mm. If the maximum
stress in the material of the beam is 120 N/mm2 and moment of inertia of the section is 7 x
108 mm4 , find the span of the beam.
4. A beam of 100mm square cross section is used with a diagonal in a vertical position. If the
vertical shear force at a section is 1200N, find the shear stress at the neutral axis and the
maximum shear stress occurring and its location in the cross-section.
5. Find the slope and deflection at the free end of the cantilever shown in the figure. Take E
=200KN/mm2 and I=40 x 106 mm4 .

6. Determine the slope and deflection of a simply supported beam carrying a point load at the
centre by Mohr’s theorem.
7. At a point in a two dimensional system, the stresses on two mutually perpendicular planes are
200MPa ( Tensile ) and 150 MPa (Compressive ). These stresses are accompanied by a shear
stress of 100MPa. Find out the location of principal planes. Also determine the magnitude and
nature of principal stresses and that of maximum shear stress.
8. The load on a bolt consists of an axial pull of 15kN together with a transverse shear of 7.5kN.
Determine the diameter of the bolt according to
(a) Maximum principal stress theory
(b) Maximum shear stress theory
(c) Maximum strain energy theory. Elastic limit in tension may be taken as 285 MPa and
Poisson’s ratio as 0.23. Apply a factor of safety of 3 for all theories.

1. A steel rod of 20mm diameter passes centrally through a copper tube of 50 mm external diameter and
40 mm internal diameter. The tube is closed at each end by rigid plates of negligible thickness. The
nuts are tightened lightly home on the projecting parts of the rod. If the temperature of the assembly
is raised by 500 C, calculate the stresses developed in copper and steel. Take E for steel and copper as
200GN/mm2 and 100GN/mm2 and α for steel and copper as 12 x 10−6 per0 C and 18 x 10−6 per0 C.
2. Draw the shear force and bending moment diagrams for the beam shown in the figure.

3. A cantilever of beam I section in 6m long and is used as a cantilever. The beam is subjected to a
uniformly distributed load of 10KN/m over the entire span. The section of the beam is as follows:
Top flange : 200mm x 50mm deep
Bottom flange : 400mm x 60mm deep
Web : 50mm x 200mm deep
Determine the maximum bending stresses in the beam and draw the bending stress distribution across
the cross section. Take E=2 x 105 N/mm2 .
4. A beam of 120mm square cross section is used with a diagonal in a vertical position. If the vertical
shear force at a section is 1000N, find the shear stress at the neutral axis and the maximum shear
stress occurring and its location in the cross-section.
5. Determine the deflections at points C, D and E in the beam shown in the figure. Take E=200KN/mm2
and I=60 x106 mm4 .

6. Determine the slope and deflection of a simply supported beam carrying a uniformly distributed load
by Mohr’s Theorem.
7. At a point in a loaded piece of material, the stresses on two mutually perpendicular planes are 125MPa
(Tensile) and 85 Mpa (Compressive ). These stresses are accompanied by a shear stress of 60MPa. Find
out the location of principal planes. Also determine the magnitude and nature of principal stresses
and that of maximum shear stress.
8. The load on a bolt consists of an axial pull of 25kN together with a transverse shear of 12.5kN.
Determine the diameter of the bolt according to
(a) Maximum principal strain theory.
(b) Maximum shear stress theory
(c) Maximum shear strain energy theory. Elastic limit in tension may be taken as300 MPa and
Poisson’s ratio as 0.22. Apply a factor of safely of 3 for all theories.

(b) A circular rod is 120 mm diameter at one end and 240 mm at the other end is fixed at both
ends. Determine the stresses induced, if the temperature of the rod is raised by 5000 C.
Take E=2 x 105 N/mm2 and α = 1.2X10−5 /0 C
2. Draw the shear force and bending moment diagrams for the following beam marking salient
points. Show detailed calculations.

left support. Calculate
(a) The position and the value of maximum deflection
(b) Slope at mid-span
(c) Deflection at the load point E=200 GPa and I=15 x 106 mm4 .
6. Find the expression for the slope and deflection of a cantilever of length L, which carries a
uniformly distributed load over a length ”a” from the fixed end by
(a) Double integration method
(b) Moment area method.
7. At a point in a loaded bracket, the stresses on two mutually perpendicular planes are 150MPa
(Tensile) and 100MPa (Compressive ). These stresses are accompanied by a shear stress of
75MPa. Find out the location of principal planes. Also determine the magnitude and nature
of principal stresses and that of maximum shear stress.
8. The load on bolt consists of an axial pull of 20kN together with a transverse shear of 10kN.
Determine the diameter of the bolt according to
(a) Maximum principal stress theory
(b) Maximum principal strain theory
(c) Maximum shear strain energy theory. Elastic limit in tension may be taken as 295 MPa
and Poisson’s ratio as 0.22. Apply a factor of safety of 2.7 for all theories.

1. Three bars made of copper; zinc and aluminum are of equal length and have cross section 500, 700, and 1000 mm2
respectively. They are rigidly connected at their ends. Of this compound member is subjected to a longitudinal
pull of 250KN, estimate the proportional of the load carried on each rod and the induced stresses. Take the
values of E for copper =1.3 x 105 N/mm2 and for zinc=1.0x105 N/mm2 and for aluminum=0.8 x 105 N/mm2 .
2. Draw the shear force and bending moment diagrams showing the salient values for the loaded beam shown in
the figure.

3. An I section shown in the figure is simply supported over a span of 12m. if the maximum permissible bending
stress is 80 N/mm2 , what concentrated load can be carried at a distance of 4m from one support ?

4. A beam of triangular section is having its base b and height h. it is placed with its base horizontal. If at a
certain section of the beam, the shear force is F,
(a) Find the maximum shear stress
(b) Shear stress at the neutral axis. Draw the shear stress distribution curve.
5. Find the displacement at free end of the cantilever shown in the figure. Find its numerical value if L=3m, a=2m,
W1=20KN, W2=30KN, E=2 x 105 N/mm2 and I=2 x 108 mm4 .

6. Find the expression for the slope and deflection of a cantilever of length L, which carries a uniformly distributed
load over a length ”a” from the fixed end by Moment area method starting from fundamentals.
7. At a point in a loaded specimen, the stresses on two mutually perpendicular planes are 100MPa and 50MPa both
tensile in nature. These stresses are accompanied by a shear stress of 60MPa.Find out the location of principal
planes. Also determine the magnitude and nature of principle stress and that of maximum shear stress.
8. The load on a bolt consists of an axial pull of 30kN together with a transverse shear of 15kN. Determine the
diameter of the bolt according to
(a) Maximum principal stress theory
(b) Maximum shear stress theory
(c) Maximum strain energy theory. Elastic limit in tension may be taken as 310 MPa and Poission’s ratio as
0.23. Apply a factor of safety of 2.75 for all theories.
