2. 360 lps of water is flowing in a pipe. The pipe is bent by 1200 . The pipe bend measures
360mm × 240mm and volume of the bend is 0.14m3 . The pressure at the entrance is 70KN/m2

of 20m.s. The jet makes an angle of 300 to the direction of motion of vanes when entering and
leaves at an angle of 1200 . Find the angles of vanes tips so that water enters and leaves without
shock, the work done per unit weight of water entering the vanes and the efficiency.
7. What is meant by specific speed. Also derive the expression for specific speed of a turbine.
8. A three stage centrifugal pump has impellers 40cm in diameter and 2cm wide at outlet. The
vanes are curved back at the outlet at 45o and reduce the circumferential area by 10%. The
manometric efficiency is 90% and the overall efficiency is 80%. Find the head generated by the
pump when running at 1000 r.p.m delivering 50lps. What should be the shaft horse power?

1. A 120mm disc rotates on a table separated by an oil film of 1.8mm thickness. Find the viscosity
of oil if the torque required to rotate the disc at 60 r.p.m is 3.6 × 10−4 Nm. Assume the velocity
gradient in the oil film to be linear.
2. (a) What is meant by stream line, pale line, streak line and stream tube?
(b) What is continuity equation? Explain.
4. A jet of water having a velocity of 15m/s strikes a curved vane which is moving with a velocity
of 5m/s in the same direction as that of the jet at inlet. The vane is so shaped that the jet is
deflected through 1350 . The diameter of jet is 100mm. Assuming the vane to be smooth find
force exerted by the jet on the vane in the direction of motion, power exerted on the vane and
efficiency of the vane.
8. A four-stage centrifugal pump has four identical impellers keyed to the same shaft. The shaft
is running at 400r.p.m and the total manometric head developed by the multistage pump is
40m. The discharge through the pump is 0.2m3 /s . The vanes of each impeller are having
outlet angle as 450 . If the width and diameter of each impeller at outlet is 5cm and 60cm
respectively find the manometric efficiency.

2. A pipe line carrying oil (G=0.8) changes in diameter from 300mm at position 1 to 600mm
diameter at position 2 which is 5 meters at a higher level. If the pressures at positions 1 and 2
are 100KN/m2 and 60KN/m2 respectively and the discharge is 300lps, find loss of head and
direction of flow .
3. List the various minor energy losses. Also give the formula for each .
4. A jet of water having a velocity of 30m/s strikes a series of radial curved vanes mounted on a
wheel which is rotating at 200 r.p.m. The jet makes an angle of 200 with the tangent to the
wheel at inlet and leaves the wheel with a velocity of 5m/s at an angle of 1300 to the tangent to
the wheel at outlet. Water is flowing from outward in a radial direction. The outer and inner
radii of the wheel are 0.5m and 0.25m respectively. Determine vane angles at inlet and outlet,
workdone per unit weight of water and efficiency of the wheel.
