Class Exercise – Chapter 5 (SAMPLE SIZE CALCULATION)

Complete all questions.

1. Amy is concerned that too many forms are being filled out incorrectly. She feels that about 8 percent of all the forms have an
error.

a. How large a sample size should Amy use to be 99 percent certain she will be within 0.02?

b. How large a sample size should Amy use to be 90 percent certain she will be within 0.02?

c. How large a sample size should Amy use to be 95 percent sure that she will be within 0.02?

Show your calculations here.

a) σp = i/z n = p(1-p)/ (σp2) + 1

= (0.08 (1-0.08))/((0.00775)(0.00775)) + 1
= 0.02/2.58

= (0.0736/0.0000600625) + 1
= 0.00775

= 1226.66 + 1

= 1227

b) σp = i/z n = p(1-p)/ (σp2) + 1

= 0.02/1.65 = (0.08 (1-0.08))/(( 0.01212)(0.01212)) + 1

= (0.0736/0.0001468944) + 1
= 0.01212
= 501.36 + 1

= 502

c) σp = i/z n = p(1-p)/ (σp2) + 1

= (0.08 (1-0.08))/(( 0.010204)(0.010204)) + 1

= 0.02/1.96

= (0.0736/0.000104121) + 1
= 0.010204

= 707.012

= 708

2. Rasheeda wants to survey about employees’ addiction to Facebook. It is estimated that with a 95% confidence interval having a
tolerable error of 3 percent and the acceptable interval is between 0.03, how many employees that should be included in the sample
(a)?

b. How many employees should Raseeda survey if she increased the level of confidence to 98%

c. How many employees should Raseeda survey if she increased the level of confidence to 97%

Show your calculations here.

a) σp = i/z n = p(1-p)/ (σp2) + 1

= 0.03/1.96 = (0.03 (1-0.03))/(( 0.0153)(0.0153)) + 1

= 0.0153 = (0.0291/0.00023409) + 1

= 124.35897 + 1

= 125

b) σp = i/z n = p(1-p)/ (σp2) + 1

= (0.03 (1-0.03))/(( 0.012875)(0.012875)) + 1

= 0.03/2.33

= (0.0291/0.000165765) + 1
= 0.012875

= 175.5497 + 1

= 176

c) σp = i/z n = p(1-p)/ (σp2) + 1

= (0.03 (1-0.03))/(( 0.01382)(0.01382)) + 1

= 0.03/2.17

= (0.0291/0.0001909924) + 1
= 0.01382

= 152.362 + 1

= 153

3. Suppose Al-Surya Company, a large manufacturer of dining table manufacturer, asks you to determine how could they improve
their current IT systems. You determine that only 5% of their staffs made errors with the system. You also decided that the acceptable
interval estimate will be +/- 0.04 and you choose a confidence level of 99 percent. Calculate the standard error and sample size.

b. If you decided on a confidence level of 96%, is there any difference in sample size? How much?

c. If you decided on a confidence level of 50%, is there any difference in sample size? How much?

Show your calculations here.

a) σp = i/z n = p(1-p)/ (σp2) + 1

= 0.04/2.58 = (0.05 (1-0.05))/((0.0155)(0.0155)) + 1

= 0.0155 = (0.0475/0.00024025) + 1

= 197.71 + 1

= 198

b) σp = i/z n = p(1-p)/ (σp2) + 1

= 0.04/2.05 = (0.05 (1-0.05))/((0.0195)(0.0195)) + 1

= 0.01951 = (0.0475/0.0003806) + 1

= 124.8029 + 1

= 125

c) σp = i/z n = p(1-p)/ (σp2) + 1

= 0.04/0.67 = (0.05 (1-0.05))/((0.0597)(0.0597)) + 1

= 0.0597 = (0.0475/0.00356409) + 1

= 13.327 + 1

= 14
